Food Industry Controlled By The Mafia - Food crime is a multi-billion dollar industry affecting everything from the cheapest to most expensive ingredient.
Food Industry Controlled By The Mafia (2021)
Director: Bénédicte Delfaut
Writers: Patrick Benquet, Bénédicte Delfaut
Stars: Laurent Lederer, Micky Sébastian
Genre: Documentary
Country: France
Language: English
Synopsis:
Horse-meat labelled as beef. Honey diluted with cheap sugar syrups. Counterfeit extra-virgin olive oil. Food crime is a multi-billion dollar industry affecting everything from the cheapest to most expensive ingredient. 10% of what we eat is thought to be adulterated. “What we know for sure is that food fraud is growing exponentially and it’s more and more worrying,” states one consumer advocate.
Criminal syndicates are infiltrating the global food supply chain, undermining the ability of consumers to trust what is on the label and what ends up on their plate. In Italy, entire sectors of the food industry are controlled by the mafia. All over the world, well-organised criminal networks work together to penetrate complex supply chains. Scams range from the intentional mislabelling of inferior products in order to pass them off as premium items, to the substitution of one food stuff for something else entirely. The profits are enormous. But what are the risks to the consumer? How can we identify food fraud? And what can be done to stop it?
In this investigation, we follow the food fraud brigades and reveal how little we know about what we’re eating. From the olive groves of Italy to the fish markets of France and the abattoirs of Poland, this film takes you on a culinary journey of a very different kind. A global investigation into the counterfeit food industry.

I watch a channel of a homesteader in Iowa and the local “big ag” farmer next door applied pesticides on the neighbouring field on a windy day and her tomato crop suffered toxic drift. Shocking. Mostly corn and soya beans nearby. Not great. She is monitoring her crop after a lot of work to nurse them back but is worried about the effects of the pesticide drift. 😮

I really dislike that the HEAD of our food decisions stated "it was a crisis because of the media cover" like.. was it not a big deal if the media had not covered it?! What in the fk does that mean?! It was a HUGE DEAL even if NOONE SAID ANYTHING. If I am buying beef, especially because the consumer is not the one saving any money in this bait and switch deal, then I expect it TO BE BEEF.

Funny though: "Poland's 2019 Parliamentary Election by the Warsaw Institute" (to be googled). PiS (the Law and Justice party) has its powerbase in the countryside. They are not going to investigate their own voters. "Share of animal production in global agricultural production in Poland" shows where the meat comes from. It would be like asking the Texas government to investigate why there are power outages. It's called corruption and conservatives are prone to it. Lefties can be corrupt, too - but it's not that prevalent. There are to many who are actually in it for "the people".

In 1980, as a teenager, I was working in a small town grocery store after school. The store owner had a background as a meat cutter and bought this little store. We ground and sold a lot of ground beef. We were known for our meat department. We used a lot of frozen shank meat, purchased thru the warehouse supplier. It came from Australia. We joked that it was kangaroo meat. Then the supplier suddenly changed and we got a letter from the warehouse....would you believe they found kangaroo in the shank meat? No more jokes after that.

My whole life i was told that "our" Polish meat is one of the best, so I am kinda shocked by the information provided in this documentary. I decided do do some quick research about the Bielecki company and I found that it supplies Lidl (i always used to buy all sort of meats from Lidl, i guess not anymore...), additionally sometime in september of 2023 some of their minced beef batches have been infected with salmonella but it was quickly found and as far as i know, noone got sick from it (but i did not do a deep research so who knows). I will post a thread about this on some forums and i will come back with more info in a few days.

Look for the date it was pressed. Look for the date it expires. Look for a peppery taste. Look for dark glass bottles. Finally, pour some into a container and put it into your fridge. It should go thick. Cancer causing seed oils will not thicken, but pure olive oil will.
@tomasbickel58
@tomasbickel58 Ай бұрын
The funny thing is: you probably don't know how olive oil has to taste - just as a reference point. You have really go to the source to taste the real deal and then go back to the supermarket. Probably none of the bottles sold there will do, since no costumer (except you) knows how it should taste. *Storytime*: we went to Venice by car 2 years ago. On the way back we stopped at a small farm. Wife tasted, was satisfied, bought a few bottles. The bottles didn't taste like the sample :| .. This year we went to Spain. We went into a Carrefour. I googled what their best brand was. Picked that. It was ok - How do I know? A friend brought a used Coke bottle full of oil from Turkey - which was probably the real deal. My wife was very satisfied. That Carrefour-bottle had maybe a fourth of taste-strength than that Coke-bottle.

Simple solution for all. Each farm for all of these products have to refine the products and seal the products with their unique stamps and tracable numbers. That way, the farms create a value-added product, making them more money while also having the products tracable to that farm, so if the product is subpar, then they know where to go. Of course, with every batch needing testing. This is very simple, but beauracracy does not allow for changes to take place quickly enough or at all. If the farm produces a product like milk then the milk is sealed and stamped and once the milk is tranfered to the specialized refiners, then they need stamps and seals once the milk is complete. With value added claims requiring testing. Like grassfed and organic milk. Easy stuff.
