I saw a video where they proved that the inner part of the lid is not airtight. It’s not water proof when sealed with the outer part of the lid. Pretty expensive lids if they don’t keep food safe. I bought a bunch of similar lids as I am just getting into preparing and plan on returning them and trying my local bakery instead. Thanks for the videos and God bless you

Lid tip! I put the ring of the gamma lid and the other snap lids in the oven on low for just a couple of minutes. So, turn the oven onto lowest setting, warm it up, turn it off, put the lid upside down on the middle rack, leave the door open a bit, keep a close eye on it for a couple of minutes, touch the lid and it should be too hot to handle but not too hot to touch, use oven mitts to place it on the bucket and it will slide right on.

I recently sat on a gamma lid to try to snap it into place - I’m sure it looked very silly, but it worked eventually. We just purchased several more for flour storage as I’m now making bread for the Lord’s Supper at church. I found a great bulk Amish store about an hour away to supply 50lbs bags of flour and whole grains. I’m excited to start using and storing more whole grains.

I keep buckets on heavy wooden shelves in my garage. We have very dry climate. I wedge 2 12inch cinnamon sticks on the insides of my 5 ga bucket right before I seal the bucket: no matter which lid I use. Mice don't like the smell. I also wrapped a third of a piece of paper towel around 1-2 sticks and taped it closed. Then, I tossed them amongst my buckets. It's been 3 months, and I no longer see signs of mice....poop or gnawing or nesting. I got a big bag of cinnamon sticks from Hobby Lobby 1/2 price last Christmas.

Gamma seal tops are nice but 1.99 for push on vs almost $10 for a gamma lid makes a huge difference budget-wise. Also, I use 1 gal, 2 gal, 3 gal buckets because I cant even pull or push 5 gallon buckets by myself for daily use with my herniated discs. Consider your own financial and physical abilities when choosing. Try one of each first. ❤

Right, and that was the point of this video. While the Gamma lids are nice and I really like them, for those who cannot afford them, I do not think they are worth the cost if they can get buckets and lids for free or at least very cheap. Those are the only kind I have used since doing food storage until I finally splurged and bought these gamma lid buckets, which since shooting this video, have gone up in price so they are about $20 each bucket and lid set.

While bay leaves can help, if the weevil larvae is already inside the grains, it will do nothing to prevent them from hatching and spreading. Freezing grains first then allowing to dry for a few days then sealing up in mylar inside buckets is best if you are storing in large amounts or in 1/2 to full gallon jars, vacuum sealed.

O yes, and there is no need to do any of that with popcorn

Thank you for your prompt response.....So appreciated....❤ Yikes I did 10 buckets of rice and 10 of pinto beans just with Bay Leaves 😭 lots of bay leaves....Do I have to redo them with Mylar Bags ? Or can I just leave them and cross my fingers 🤞🙏

@@floridaglitz It is really hard to say. The funny thing is I went for years storing grains no special way and never had issues with weevils until a couple of years ago.Twice in spelt grains and once in wheat but still have never yet had any problem with my beans and I do nothing special with them so I doubt those will be an issue but the rice is another common grain that weevils like but I do not have my rice stored in mylar and have never had a single weevil in the many years I have stored it that way and I still have not bothered with mylar with that.

Good Grief! Must be due to popularity. I would like to get more but am going to see if we can find some regular buckets and lids for free or really cheap. We do not have all the places people are mentioning (Tractor Supply and such) but we may have to go into town soon so I am going to check the Coastal store where we get our chicken feed

@@RainCountryHomestead It is called GREED and INFLATION! I have been so shocked this week at prices that it is unbelievable. Not just pennies, but Walmart had a case (12) or wide mouth canning jars and wanted over $50 for them. I will wait and keep restoring or reusing what I have. Also, you may not know this, but Tractor Supply does ship. Also, if you have their buckets, the ones from Lowes are just slightly different in size - so a hassle some times. I have coops here in the cities and they will order stuff for me and have pretty good prices.

Amazon is ridiculous. Lowes, Menards, home depot etc has the gamma lids for under $10. Go to a bakery and see if they have buckets for free or a couple bucks.

Is that the lids WITH the buckets or the lids alone? If it is lids alone, I have seen them cheaper than that

Also, in case you missed, I did mention going to bakeries and such were buckets with lids can often be picked up for free or very cheap
