My Endocrinologist at the VA was useless. I'm the one who figured out what caused my Hashimoto's. It was the Mirena IUD. I went to the guy to find out what caused my thyroid condition, and he said, there was no correlation between thyroid issues and birth control. I took the IUD out in 2017, and two years later, he was dumbfounded when my labs showed that the TPO had dropped from 400 to 169 and thyroglobulin went from 3 (high) to in range. I have been birth control free since 2017. As of May 2021, TPO is at 60 and thyroglobulin is still in range. He still wouldn't listen to me for the next two years. I argued with him every single appointment. I stopped the levothyroxine in March 2021, and my vitiligo has been healing on its own. I don't trust doctors with their medicine for long term chronic care, but I will use a doctor for a broken bone or something.

Or, a Homeopath - a lot of questions will be asked during the consultation, to ascertain which one, or more remedys to administer. Ive been off MD's for 99% of my health care, as they aren't IMHO very well trained, when the go the Alopathic Medicine path - there's never a cure in Alopathic Medicine, though you're more likely to be healed by one of the two professions mentioned. They should have a food processing classification. Base it on how processed foods are. Example: Broccoli just grows and we pick it and eat it. We call foods like broccoli score of 0 for no processing. The more processing the higher the number, higher the number the higher the tax. Use the money from junk food tax to reward those eating healthy by lowering cost of healthy food.

I couldn't believe what they were feeding me while I have a disease cause by sugar itself. Now I am pump with meds to control my insulin for the rest of my life. I am told by my dietitions and pcp to eat every two hours and snack between meals too bc we don't want to spike our blood sugar. Well I follow their recommendation but my condition got worst! Now my foot has gone numb and my blood glucose didn't improve with the meds or eating schedule. I couldn't loose weight either. I did my own research and change food diets, and fasting plus exercise. I lost weight and lower my glucose!!! It looks like my PCP and dietition had no intentions of trying to heal or cure me of this disease. I have lower my a1C test results from 8.93 to 4.8.

When I grew up in the 1960s on a livestock farm raising beef and pork, I would take 400-pound beef calves and feed them close to 1000 pounds in 7 months as my 4-H projects. They got a diet as heavy on corn as fast as possible as I transitioned them from a silage-corn mixture. That silage mixture was already far richer than the grass they had grown up eating on a western ranch before they were rounded up and shipped to our midwest grain farm. The intent was to transition them from grass to grain. I gave my animals an especially rich corn diet--straight corn ASAP. That means shelled corn--the grain only, without the corn cobs ground up from complete ear corn--as opposed to what we gave our ordinary feedlot animals. One time we slaughtered one of these 4-H calves for our own use. My mother complained that when barbecuing its meat versus an animal from our feedlot, it was especially prone to create fires due to all the fat dripping on the briquets. Essentially you can say that I "finished" my 4-H projects by more than doubling their weight on a corn-intensive diet. As part of 4-H I was required to keep close records of their feed consumption and weight. The animals were weighed at the start and end of the project so that a daily “rate of gain” was calculated against amount of feed given. That number was displayed over them at the county fair. It took a little longer to bring our feedlot cattle to market weight, but long before they were shipped to slaughter they were on a straight ground ear corn diet---plus a soy-based protein supplement, which was just a dusting on top of their corn, maybe a couple 50-pound sacks mixed in with at least 1000 pounds of grain, perhaps 2000 pounds. Nowadays grain farmers shell the corn as it is harvested by large combines, leaving the corn cobs to decompose in the fields, but they then go through and bale the corn stalks which are later ground into the feed mixtures for the animals. Of course all this corn is GMO. In my farm days the protein supplement also contained diethylstilbestrol, a growth hormone which was found to cause cancer in the daughters of women who had been given it when pregnant, until that was discovered and banned for women in the 1970s. Essentially it was medically available for the entire period of the baby boom generation. (Women were treated with it for a reproductive purpose rather than weight gain!) Livestock raisers were supposed to switch cattle off such a hormone mixture at least a week or ten days before sending them to market, but I would never trust all cattle raisers to be so responsible simply due to the extra handling the switch would cause, since the recommendation was to keep them on a supplement until slaughter. Also, slaughter dates were never exact, and were often determined by the daily price changes the slaughterhouses offered. We kept all our market-bound animals in one feedlot, eating from a common free choice feeder that kept the corn in front of them constantly. That period of their development was called “full feed.” We sorted them out in small batches based on which of the larger group were most market-ready, so they were all getting the same feed but not going to market at the same time. And I never heard of beef being rejected after testing at a slaughterhouse revealed the hormone. I also worked in a beef slaughterhouse--albeit only for one day. I left the farm in the 1970s and I don't know if stilbestrol is still being used, but antibiotics certainly are, and I’ve read that perhaps 2/3 or 3/4 of all antibiotic consumption in the US now goes to meat animals, largely in their feed. I don't believe such hormone testing of meat was ever done, nor could it easily be tracked back to the cattle producer who fed it. I certainly never heard of any farmers being penalized for it.

Nuts, some seeds, some legumes, copious amounts of greens, vegetables, free-range eggs from non-grain fed fowl, Alaskan salmon a few times a week, and clean water. The variety in our menu is vast, even with these "limitations". A vegetable curry made with coconut, peanut butter, chickpeas, mushrooms, and hot peppers, over wild "rice" is a favorite...especially while backpacking. You need to know if your LDL particle count is too high, which means too many damaged/small glycated LDL lipids. The conventional test is limited and misleading and does not count the particles. Some doctors get it and some have been tricked by the cholesterol myths. All of this is a big un-learning exercise. If your blood sugar is staying down, then you shouldn't have many small damaged (glycated) LDL lipids.

@@josephbockrath5230 Hi Joseph, if you eat any vegetables then you aren't zero carb. My plan was to go low car not exceeding 30grams of carbs per day. You are about right where I was in height, weight and age. I dropped 30-40 lbs in the first 3-4 months and got my A1C down to 4.9. In the beginning I was so strict about the carbs I avoided using regular mustard because it has some sugar in it. Just cut out the potatoes, rice, bread, and only eat low glycemic vegetables like cauliflower rice, green beans -- basically vegetables that are green are safe. But seriously try to count your "micros" to make sure you do not exceed 30grams per day. Let me recommend Dr. Ken Berry and Dr. Jason Fung, Nowadays I drink a bulletproof coffee in the morning, then I don't need to eat anything until at least after 1pm. You DO NOT need to count calories, just count carbs! If you have any other questions -- feel free to ask. Even when I cheat, I always have the ketogenic principles in my mind to help me from getting way off track. Since I discovered low-carb eating, my A1C has never been higher than 5.3. Oh, one other thing; get the book, "Undoctored" by William Davis!

@@michaelbrickley2443 wouldn’t making everyone adopt a plant based diet cause an increase in human methane production instead? I certainly fart a lot more on a plant based diet. I fail to see how shifting the diet in such a way would actually achieve your goal. It might even achieve the opposite result. Meat and dairy is very nutrient and calorie dense and cows do a better job of processing plants than humans do. I’d argue that replacing too much meat would result in the need to produce far more plants to produce the equivalent nutritional value of meat which could result in more industrial farming pollution instead. I will agree that the American diet sure could use an overhaul that would include more plants.

Dr. Lustig, thank you for this presentation. I gave it a thumbs up. However, I take issue with your statement that grass fed cattle require 18 months to get to slaughter weight and size, but corn fed cattle only take six weeks. Perhaps you miss spoke. While you are correct that it takes about 18 months to finish cattle on grass. With the exception of calves destined for veal (usually dairy bull calves), 100% of beef cattle destined for slaughter are grass fed for ten to fourteen months before they are sent to feedlots for grain finishing. It then takes about six weeks to bring an animal to slaughter size and weight. The ration fed to "cattle on feed" may or may not contain corn. It is usually made up of a combination of corn, soybean, cottonseed, wheat, barley, millet, spent brewer's grain, beet pulp, and other grain byproducts and alfalfa hay. The makeup of the ration is highly price dependent. If the price of one commodity is too high it will be replaced with a cheaper one while maintaining the protein and energy requirements to finish the animal to slaughter specifications.

Probably not, but just wondering. Anyway, don’t put anything but spices on your food. Even that can lead to overeating. Boring is the way to go. Try no salt and no sugar for a week. Fibre is not required in the human diet. We can change some into fatty acids via fermentation in the gut but virtually all of it is excreted. So what use is it ? Should we eat sand because we don't digest that either ? Yes it bulks food and that helps if you eat carbs which trigger hunger. But eat no fibre and I am perfectly healthy.

I don't eat a lot of stevia, because I am no longer addicted to sugar. (Hmmm...I am still addicted, but I never give in after losing 75 # from my small frame.) I love the sweetness of stevia and it doesnt cause me to eat more. I eat only whole organic foods and keep my eating in a 4 hr. window each day. It's been 15 years and I have put on about 10 pounds which I will take off by doing a few 3 day fasts.

Great lecture, but I thought the topic of tyrannical taxation fell short when there was no discussion of teaching our children the basics of dietary science in school, I would like to know what the government does with the tax from tobacco? Probably given to the giant food stamp program in those participating states who haven’t agreed to prohibit the junk food purchased.

Food Stamps don't just subsidize carbs. Or can be used to buy organic, grass-feed beef and chicken, fresh greens and vegetables, and fruit. Unfortunately, the poor have never been taught to shop for value and the working poor work too many hours to either don't know how to fix fresh foods or don't have the energy. It's a vicious circle of disease.

Didn’t change my diet beyond that - the fat which I thought impossible to get rid of started to melt away - and keeps melting… I cannot say enough Thank You’s to these dedicated people who bring knowledge to us. Thank you very much for your information on Stevia. You described my experience perfectly. I and my eldest son had begun to eat more healthily using Ketogenic guidelines to great effect. I've never bought into the processed/fast food lifestyle as a routine, daily way of life. I like home cooked food. My grandmother's influence and she always loved butter and saturated fats, wouldn't touch the margarine that became all the rage; none of today's health issues for her. I had no problem with straight Keto from the beginning, even fasting 24 - 72hrs was no problem. After a visit to my son, where we had hot chocolate sweetened with Stevia. ( I wondered about the effect on the brain of the 'sweet hit', but trying to find out about that, the information seemed to indicate there was not an issue). It was delicious, unfortunately. Now I understand the cravings for 'sweet'! We both have had the problems you've described so perfectly, since we included Stevia in our diet. I'm fortunate not have a 'sweet tooth', but my son really likes chocolate so had begun to eat up Christmas leftovers too. Now that I fully understand the brain's reaction to the 'sweet hit' my own suspicions have been confirmed I'll be passing this lecture on to my son. Again many thanks. It's also so encouraging to realise all that is being done and the progress being slowly made in the fight to overcome this evil. How about all the allergies and other sensitivities that affect the populations? I don't know about America, but in the UK the rise in these types of afflictions in young schoolchildren, even from baby/toddlerhood is rising year on year. Worse since 'Follow on baby milk' came on the market, although I would hesitate to propose a link there. Just noticed the heightened sensitivities a few years after this item was a regular in the baby section of the supermarket shelves.

I think it's a little bit of an exaggeration, however. We need to also increase the payments rich people make into FICA. That would help a lot and be a whole lot fairer. After all, they could lose their wealth in the end and need social security payments themselves. One never knows. And let's not forget, sugar is snuck into all kinds of other foods, too. Plus, even foods without added sugar have too much sugar, like fruit juices. We may blame the government for not controlling all this better, but it is private industry that's producing it without a qualm since they pay politicians to work on their behalf instead of ours.

Dr. Lustig, What are your current thoughts about the use of Processed Seed Oils and their effects on the health of people? In my opinion, it's not just about the Sugar (and fructose). In my opinion, the USDA should implement nutritional guidance about the intake of Omega-6 fatty acids. There ought to be Recommended Daily Maximum Exposure Limits on the total intake of Omega-6 fatty acid ingestion.

A little over 3 months ago, after I took a random lipid test, I was told my A1C was 6.2 (pre-diabetes level), my cholesterol was high enough to cause a stroke, and my triglycerides were over 500. I IMMEDIATELY threw away every food with a sugar ingredient, and the same for ingredients that break down into sugar after being eaten (bread, pasta, flour, grains, potatoes, tapioca...etc). Pay attention to the Glycemic Index, and eat even your healthy foods in the following order: Drink a shot of whey first, next eat high fiber veggies like broccoli or avocado, eat your sardines/meat and nuts next, and wrap things up with low glycemic index fruits last, then immediately start exercising -- maintaining this precise order will flatten your body's insulin response to a meal. Three months later I am down almost 40 lbs and am just 5 lbs away from the Healthy BMI category from an Obese starting point, my A1C is 5.8 (5.7 is normal so I am almost there), my cholesterol is fine, and my triglycerides are now around 50. I am NEVER eating sugar or breads again. Throw it away, or it will kill you. And let me tell you that you will have an abundance of healthy, fresh foods to choose from and you won't miss sugar even one bit!
