original north karnataka restaurant from dharwad, north karnataka, jollada rotti meals jowar rotti, maddike kaalu, moth beans, badanekayi ennegayi, eggplant, hesarukaalu, sprouted mung beans, sprouts, donne menasinakai, gurelu, shenga, chutney, jhunka, shenga obbatu, hollige, malleswaram, bengaluru,
Kudlayya Karbasaiyya Ganachari and his wife, Susheela, opened a tiny student mess, Basaveshwara Khanavali, in their home in Dharwad in 1963. Soon, the delicious reputation of their home-cooked jolada rotti oota or meal spread far beyond the student community, compelling them to open an eatery in the town’s main market. 50 years on, this North Karnataka khanavali or eating house, has expanded to 12 locations, including two in Bengaluru, but the family’s personal touch remains with the founder’s sons involved in the cooking of the meals. In this episode of Gourmet On The Road, I catch up with the youngest son, Ravi Shivappa Ganachari, at their newest eatery in Malleswaram, and savour a satisfying jolada rotti oota. Hope you enjoy the watch, stay safe and happy eating!
Jollada Rotti Meal
This is a meal that is high in nutrition, taste and variety. The jolada rottis are light and fluffy, the sort that when smeared with some butter, marry well with everything on the leaf, especially the chutneys, kempu chutney, shenga chutney and guralu, with some yoghurt. The rotti wrapped with the jhunka, salad and the gravy of the eggplant preparation, is a riot of flavours and textures. The pulses, the moth bean and sprouted mung, are satisfying, the badanekayi enngayi and dhonne menasinkayi, the sort that will have you calling for second helpings. Certainly a meal that extols the vegetarian flavours of North Karnataka.
Rs 150 (usd 2) per meal
9/10
Shenga Hollige
Served with a generous drizzle of ghee, the hollige is sticky in its texture and carries the nutty crunch of the peanuts.
Rs 30 (usd 0.4)

Mr Amanna, Do you see a need for verbal translation despite having subtitles? Perhaps if you did away with the verbal translation unless it is nuanced word/expression you could condense your content significantly thereby increasing engagement.

If I consider any other state as my home outside West Bengal it is Karnataka. Spent 8 beautiful years of my life there. Amazingly friendly and warm people, great food, and rich culture. I think people outside Karnataka who never visited the state must go and spend some time there.....By the way learnt Kannada also during my time there and can speak basic Kannada. Even after so many years I still miss the vibes.

After having learnt to cook veg food from women who have been raised in dharward, we haven't looked any further. The naati garlic is something that cant be mimicked with any other nor replaced. My jowar rotis is that I have to be satisfied with and console myself that we are eating jolada roti ! But Maharastrians from Dharwad cook a tad differently . Washing everything down with the buttermilk is very gratifying And a great way of saying bye to good food until dinner :)

My favourite palya are badanekyi eengai and dhonne mensinkaye , my sister cooks yummy these to vegetables. Shenga holige is toooo testy. We cook these dishes regularly. Hot Jolada rotti can be eaten with butter and red chutteny. No need any palya. I remember my childhood, my mother used to give us hot jolad rotti with butter and red chutteny. Spread butter on hot rotti and apply red chitteney, roll it and eat.

This jhunka is same type that maharastrians eat ,Maharastrians make two types of jhunka 1 that u ate which is semi-solid consistency and second one is thicker (solid) and jwalad rotti is same as maharastrian bhakari only difference is karnatka jwalad rotti is very thinner as compared to maharastrian bhakari. This type of food is made in both Karnataka and maharastra border region.

Many Maharashtrians are linguistically changed Kannada people over the centuries with additional northern indian inputs Kannada origin Chalukya empire stretched from Godavari to Kaveri Kannada was spoken in these areas Chinese traveller Huen Tsangs accounts mention this.Even today outside Nagpur town there are pockets of population seeking ancient dialect of Kannada as also in many interior parts of Maharastra Kannada Rastrakoota empire capital city Lattooru is latur now in maharashtra. Both Chalukyas and Rastrakootas encouraged Sanskrit and Maharastri prakrit in addition to their native Kannada .Many changed over to Mahatastri prakrit or Marathi. Seunas (also called Yadavas) of Devagiri,a prominent dynasty of North Maharashtra were Kannada origin family related to Hoysala dynasty Mumbai was founded and ruled by Shilahara dynasty a Kannada speaking people .The first Kannada Kingdom Kadambas ruled Goa and Konkan for many centuries . Shivaji maharaja ancestors were from Gadag town in north Karnataka Bhosale the surname of that family is similar to Hoysale dynasty of Karnataka .Shivaji Maharaj spent his boyhood days in namma Bengaluru .The great Vijayanagar empire (the first Hindu ruled empire in india to come up during Islamic rule time ) had just then ended and the stories of Emperor Krishnadevaraya and the acts and deeds of another daredevil king of Mysore at that time , Wodeyar King Ranadheera Kanteerava were the inspiration for the future emperor.

I have tried many cuisines in India and also overseas, but This is the healthiest cuisine anyone can have. I make sure to include the millets in my cooking everyday. Also try to make chutney powders using Chia seeds, walnuts, flax seeds and many more.....only thing is Eating jowar is healthy in Summer and in Winters Bajra is best I suppose....Also it would be better if subtitles are there for complete video to help people with hearing impairment...
