Iyer Idly, a tiny shop opened 19 years ago, selling idli batter to a community of busy scientists and engineers in the East Bengaluru neighbourhood of Vignan Nagar. In time, the shop added hot idlis in response to customer requests, and has since served only the idli and nothing else! The founder, Mr. M K Mahadevan passed on a few years ago, but his legacy continues with his wife, Mrs. Uma Devan and son, Krishnan Mahadevan, who till date make idlis the old-fashioned way, each batch of rice and urad dal batter fermented overnight, before being steamed and served with a spicy chutney that has won numerous fans for Iyer Idly not just in its neighbourhood but across the city. Idli Chutney
The idlis are made the traditional way from idli rice and urad dal that is ground to a batter and fermented overnight. The result is an idli that is soft and grainy, slightly pasty and aromatic, with a touch of tartness. It is served with a spicy chutney that some say is more popular than the idli here. This combination though is definitely the sort that makes Iyer Idly a sought after destination for what is perhaps one of Bengaluru’s favourite breakfast dishes.

There are so many memories I have with Iyer idly.. it's been my go to breakfast as a school girl. At times, it's been my lunch too! The best part was, those idlys would remain just as soft even when it has been remaining in the lunch box for over 4½ hours and the chutney just as delicious. I still remember those times when Devan mama would stand by the counter with a wide smile and heartfully serve hungry customers.. Devan mama, no matter where you are, I know you're proud of where Iyer idly has reached today..

It was my best childhood memory!! Iyer idly would surely be in my lunchbox at least thrice a week those time. I used to tell my mom that don't prepare breakfast for school I'll take idly from "idly uncle"❤ I wouldn't get bored of it at all 💯 Miss those days and "Idly uncle" too😭

That gentleman simply gave out the recipe. Simple, humble, nourishing and affordable. It is rightly said, the recipe need not be complicated to taste good, it can be as humble as Idli.

Not sure why we call idli "humble"! It's a beautiful dish with a fascinating history. It's easy on the stomach and has a nice mix of proteins and carbs. Humble, it is not. it is regal, sir, Regal, I tells ya! :)

Vignan Nagar Represent! ✌️ I'd been eating from Iyer Idly since 2004, the best idlis and the BEST CHUTNEY in the world! I very randomly came across this video and was taken by surprise, it's been almost 7 months since I moved abroad and having breakfast from here is one of the things I miss the most! I stay close to IYER IDLY. The person Krishnan was my senior at school. The idlies are little sour and fluffy which goes absolutely havoc with the chutney... Man this is real good ❤️👌👌👌

I visited this today (25 Dec 2021) and frankly thefood was just ok. The idli batter was a bit more fermented than you want and the chutney was quite dull. And the Khara Bath (or upma) was plain as well. Vada was nice and crispy but it also was far more on the duller side than packed full of flavour. Having watched this video and the one on FoodLovers TV I was expecting a lot. But forget this being the best in Bangalore, this isn't even the best in the area. You could find this calibre of idli in every nook and corner of the city and state. I don't want to hate and affect this guy's business, but sorry this feels more like a promotional video than a genuine one especially now that I've eaten here. I wouldn't even rate this in the top 10 of idli places in Bangalore. Having said that I would also like to add that the food felt very simple, in a good way. No unnecessary ingredients that bloat your stomach. Felt homely. Prices are very economical. But if you're looking for the best Idli in Bangalore, this is no where close. And sorry to say but this makes me doubt whether Mr Ammanna's description is even genuine. So much hype and explanation. I used to live close by in New Thippasandra and I know couple of places which have better stuff than here. Again not hating on it but videos like this make it seem like it is extraordinary and when you actually go and taste, you're left with disappointment.

@ Whatreally123, Simplicity and no-frills taste is preferred by many people, as the comments below this video by the hundreds of regular visitors to Iyer Idli would seem to indicate. And with queues of waiting customers waiting daily, they don't seem to be in need of promotion. That said, please share the list of top-10 eateries making Idlis in Bengaluru, in your view. And to give context, please mention which state of India you hail from, as that would indicate the expected flavor. (P.S. I have no connection with either the Iyers who run this eatery, or with Kripal Amana who runs this channel).

Wow not just yummy looking idlis but surely tasty clean idlis being sold. Most importantly the ego less attitude of sharing the recipe, steadfastly sticking to the conventional method of idli making process and helping others to set up their own stalls. Kudos to Iyer idli and way to go. No wonder not a single dislike to this video even after 1 year of uploading the video

I started following this show recently during lockdown. I am loving this show! By now I understand that no matter how many varieties Kripal Sir eats, his favourite seems to be idli, dosa and those light less spicy tiffins. I feel so entertained! This is one of the shows I look forward to this year.

For 8 years we stayed in Vignan nagar, and in all these years, there was no Sunday without Iyer idly. Our family really miss it. My sister gets it for me whenever she flies from Bangaluru to Delhi.

When all this is over, you should come to Chennai and try idlis at Rayar Mess. Small eatery near Santhome which makes delicious idlis. They've only idli, vadai and pongal in the morning. Their chutney and idli combination is a killer

I'm there Patron for 15 yrs and without any doubt can say that Iyer's Idly is best in the town. Spicy and tangy chutney served with softest idly, melts in your mouth.

OMG! Thankyou so much for featuring them! I've lived in Vignannagar since I was in 4th Std, and this place is the go to for Sunday breakfast! 💜 I have very fond memories of eating from here and this video has replenished my memories and made me fell extremely nostalgic! I don't live there anymore, but everytime I go back, I always stop by for that SOFT CLOUD LIKE IDLI AND SCRUMPTIOUS CHUTNEY! 💜

Sir, we watched your video, had a deep craving for the idlies and ended up ordering from Iyer Idly. I must tell you , we were immensely delighted by the fact that the idly retained its taste despite being exposed to the chill Bengaluru mornings. Kripal, thank you for this video! I always tried to make soft idlis. After watching this video yesterday, I kept the ratio of rice to urad dal 6:1. It made so much difference to the taste. I used to keep the ratio 3:1. Also, I used to soak rice and urad dal together, but after watching this video, I soaked and grinded them separately before mixing. Also, I tweaked my recipe of chutney after watching this. The idlis became softer and chutney, ohh my God!!! Such tasty chutney. Thanks man, seriously!!!
