Yes, I did my own experiments on this a while back. Posh bread or normal sliced white bread? Toasted or untoasted? With butter or without butter? Ketchup or other condiments/relishes? Anything else, like gherkins, jalapenos, rocket, lettuce? I went through all of these considerations. I found the best bacon sandwich is one made from normal untoasted white bread, butter, ketchup, and well done, leave-the-fat on bacon. That's it. There is beauty in the simplicity.

This is certainly an each to their own kinda thing, for me I love a bacon sandwich to be just that. bacon, bread butter and hp (brown) sauce for me, although I love my bacon to be more crispy with the fat rendered to be nice n crisp. Just a tiniest bit of oil in the pan the rest cooks from the fat. Also on the odd occasion throw a partially runny egg on top if I'm feeling a little more hungry.

You can make the hard butter softer by mushing it before you try to spread it.

Something we do here in Maine, which I'd never seen before, is spreading a bit of mayonnaise on the outside of sandwiches and lightly toasting them in the pan. Yummmm. That's how it's done on lobster rolls, usually.

Mayo on a bacon sandwich should be punishable with jail time

My favourite bacon samey, bread put in the toasted sandwich maker and flattened and toasted like about 2mm thick, cool, put on crispy streaky bacon, thinly cut tomato, black pepper, white pepper and a very finely ground sprinkle of Himalayan salt, yummy. Dress it up a bit for lunch with finely cut onions and grated cheese, jam it all under the grill.

The rule with a breakfast is always: Don't overcomplicate things. You want your breakfast to be simple, quick, and optionally ... cheap.

In the US we put mayo on our bacon sandwiches and we call them BLTs, for bacon lettuce tomato, and they're served on mildly toasted bread. The mayo, bacon, and tomato combine to form a very nice flavor. Butter would seem a bit lacking in flavor from that perspective I think
