I have seen different commentary on this footage in the last few days. Thank you Willy for not trying to de-humanize those in the video for said action. Watching the vid as a vet makes me wince of the thought of having to be in such a situation - that that action taken - was the decision that they felt needed to be made. The pain & suffering that is going on to move to action quickly with little emotion is heartbreaking.

Exactly as you put it. I've been thinking about what goes on in their heads to act so quickly and without hesitation, both of them. What they have experienced previously must be absolutely horrifying and they are probably already dehumanized and desensitized to even be able to act like this with no hesitation. Absolutely horrible to see. Certainly makes one understand PTSD much better, hell I can see someone getting mild PTSD from just watching too many videos like this one.

Surrender is the desired outcome unless you want a full on war of extermination. The Allies made it a point to treat POWs well which lead to the Italians surrendering to them en masse in North Africa. Fidel Castro went out of his way to keep casualties among Batista's footsoldiers low and let the captured ones go after stripping them of ammunition leading them to not only surrender immediately in the next ambush but to eventually desert or even join the guerrila. Meanwhile the Hindu-symbol-enthusiasts took it upon themselves to unalive every partisan they could find which left them with the most hardened fighters who fought them tooth and nail to the last bullet, the last man and the last breath.

When we talk about Iraq and Afghanistan, we have to mention the green zones. Places were the americans, brits and some others were staying for months. Fantastic food,, watching movies, going to gym. A friend of mine, macedonian was working in Afghanistan in one of those bases,, were the american soldiers were 24 hours in those safe zones. Very rarely venturing outside. The last years that is what the americans were doing. Basically hiding in those secure safe bases. So it was no surprise, Taliban cleansed the country from those who didn't want to fight and risk their lives. In Ukraine everything is different. And the first difference is - there are not green zones, were the solders indulge in buffets style food and watching movies. Only link with those soldiers in the green zones and Ukraine is those green zone soldiers become instructors to ukrainians. And that is kind of a joke.

end of the day basic training is basic training. its largely conditioning, learning how to shoot and spacing and react if there is incoming. making it motor memory. its what it is, repeating the basic stuff like shooting, learning to assemble and disassemble your weapon, and conditioning. you are not learning more advance tactics in basic training. you think they are teaching them how to clear a trench or take a building in that first 8 weeks?

@@blackriders3509 listen you cant learn all that in 8 weeks if you have been in basic training. its conditioning, and learning how to shoot, its about spacing between men, getting use to fire and dropping for cover. learning how to assemble and disassemble your weapon in case it jams. there is a reason why in the military they say your chance of survival increases after 100 days. after basic training, its learning on the job. you cant learn all what you are saying in 8 weeks. the most you get down is basic training. conditioning, and discipline, firing a weapon and assembling and disassembling your weapon quickly. its why russian soldiers have a life expectancy of 2 days in kharkiv right now cuz they getting 5 days training from interview of a contract soldier in vovchansk. he said they all move up in close groups instead of spacing and get mowed down by machine gun or take casualties when a drone hits from primary and secondary shrapnel. the chinese pla soldier interview who volunteered for russian army is saying the same thing basically.

The difference between surrendering to a soldier and a drone, is a soldier can order you to drop your weapon, search you, and guide you over to their lines to process you. A drone can’t do any of that. These drones have like 30 minute battery life and can’t guide the enemy or make sure they are searched and disarmed.

It's not up to you or the people you trust to decide when and where you may be released. Should it be? Ask all those people opposed to euthanasia and assisted S From the perspective of authorities, both earthly and heavenly, this is not the level of autonomy we should be entitled to. When it comes to military there should be no surprise, as it's one of those rare cases when your status as a property and resource is not even being oscured in any way. You die where, when and how you have to, and that's only up to the superior authority's discretion. Prohibition of mercy killing is ridiculous and hypocritical, as while many "internationally recognized" rules of warfare are rarely followed anyway, this one in particular being upheld only leads to more suffering for everyone. Everything can be abused, yet that doesn't lead us to eschew radical measures in most aspects of human activity. The red line is absolutely arbitrary and more often than not makes little if any sense.

Humans can survive the most horrific and extensive injuries and live a full life afterwards. My mother in law was involved in a car accident when in her 40s. She was crumpled up in a small ball underneath the pedals of her car with the car cab & engine crushing her. It took about 3 hours for the emergency services to find her - they had been searching in the bush, thinking that she had been flung out of the car. The doctors said that she would never live, and if she did, she would be physically & mentally disabled. Her head was so swollen from her injuries that it was bigger than a basket ball and her face and skull fractured in many places as were her legs. It took a few years of operations to sort everything out and today she still sets off metal detectors. She's 83 today and only stopped cycling about 5 years ago when a truck knocked her off her bicycle and smashed her shoulder. Her brother in law was ground crew in the Rhodesian air force and had a Frantan (napalm) bomb go off whilst the ground crew were handling it. He was engulfed in flame, severely injured and suffered 3rd degree burns to his entire body. He survived and recently passed away in his 90s.

There is nothing honorable in getting killed by a drone or killing yourself to end your suffering or asking a mate to do it for you. Sadly, this is a by product of war, regardless of it being a Russian or Ukrainian injured soldier….. clearly it was a fatal injury and the injured soldier appears to signal to shoot him, to me from my background it is a mercy killing…. It was a kind gesture given the circumstances with no apparent nearby medical or other help or pain relief. Remember it was common throughout history even in WW2 it was common practice to OD solider on morphine if fatally wounded and requested with no medical support. As an Australian Zelensky, NATO and US have blood on their hands as this war was totally avoidable had the USA not instigated it.

They straight up do, drone operators are loathed among the Ukies since a good part of them is used as a perversion of commissars where they make sure the poor pressganged schmucks keep advancing and don't surrender. There's plenty of videos of Ukie drones dropping grenades on their own when they have been caght lacking "enthusiasm" and huddled together in a shell crater rather than charging the Russians.

I feel like a key thing people forget as well. If somebody has surrendered, but you can't collect them. You just have to leave them be, doesn't matter if they go back to their team. In a booklet (forgot what it was called) that was provided for Ukraine troops to help combat war crimes there was a section about what you would do in a situation if you had to retreat from a building that you have captured people in there, but you're unable to bring them anymore. What it states to do, is leave them with what they'd need such as water, and then retreat away from there leaving the POW's. Doesn't matter if those members could potentially come back to the front, the law states they're completely protected no matter what. Can't accept the surrender? Well then you leave them be, if capable to provide them with the means to safely evacuate you must.

Remember that British officer in Afghanistan i believe who finished off an injured enemy soldier who was essentially finished anyway but "ideally" should have been treated, taken prisoner and evacuated but was instead shot dead. The argument on the part of the officer being where the patrol was and the enemy strategy of targeting units trying to assist and evacuate injured people often led to extreme dangers for the allied forces leaving them more open to attacks.

If the soldier is wounded and unarmed, he becomes a non-combatant. In the case that it is not possible to take him prisoner, the laws of war say that you have to let him go (!!!) The most obvious solution is to let unarmed (or lightly armed) military medics from both sides make their jobs and save the lives of wounded soldiers in the battlefield regardless of their uniform. The FPVs or any weapons should not be used against medics or vehicles clearly identified with the Red Cross. In past wars it did happen that medics from both sides collaborated to save as many lives as possible.

Now they just let the rabble butcher eachother without sense or reason, no need to restrict anything or establish a code of conduct whatsoever...

In some situations a wounded soldier is actually more of a hinderance than a dead one. The dead can be left behind where as a wounded man needs to be carried, which lowers the capabilities of the unit. With only three men in the unit, and so far out, those poor sods in the clip would have faced an impossible situation. It may well be too that the men had agreed previously to put their mates out of their misery if such a situation were to occur. We shall never know. A few "technical" issues with the surrendering to a drone: 1. The surrendering soldier should be signaling before the strike, once hit it's a lot harder to drag himself hundreds of meters or even kilometers to the drone side and 2. The strike drones (not the bombers or scouts) have very limited battery, usually they are meant to be used with max load and mostly to get to the position and detonate. There are situations where the scout could take over the prisoner, but that's not always the case and that means you compromise the mission given, in order to try to guide an already injured prisoner. If I remember correctly, all of the "lucky" soldiers that successfully got to the opposite side to surrender, signaled that they want to surrender before they got hit. That's not the reality that we see out there. Most of the soldiers just choose to die, never attempting to surrender, or trying to do so when they are all alone (the rest of the squad got wiped) or when they are already hit, badly.

Doesn’t make sense to suspect it is a prisoner with a different protocol to evac. War is Hell ... it has been said. Not too long ago in human history fighting was up close and personal. Even then after the battle was done wounded were finished off by the victors. Humans have not changed, only some international laws which get applied or not depending on the power dictating them arbitrarily ... cough collateral damage when a wedding party in the ME gets red misted. Same goes for torturer and extraordinary rendition off to some black site. Back to the situation of the video. If the two knew each other and were mates and the wounded [how bad] asked his mate to off him ... its between the two of them and no one else on this orb. Anyone opining about this with no experience of such environments and only have movies, rank ideology, or any other environmental biases should STU. One reason for the O class is to keep the enlisted from going old school and raping and pillaging citizans around them. The stress of combat does things to the human mind and people end up doing things they would never do outside it. Then they come home .....

The purpose of conscription has often been missunderstod. It is primerily not to create military power. It is to unify and consolidate a country and to forge resistans, both mentally and physically. This can counter extremism and control of conduct. ... If troups not founded locally, such as invadors ( wikings ), there's very little to hold back war-crimes. Thus include mercenaries, often seen as "scaping the barrel". ... Additionally, mercenaries, provide deniability and are considered expendable. - If lack of money, they may even be shelled by their OWN troups, just what happened Wagner. .... War is a highly corrosive enviroment. .... I am 100% for conscription, due to environment/resistans.

If I understand Willy correctly, what he’s saying is that any combatant can avoid being attacked by a drone by putting his hands up, then the drone has to hang around while the soldier walks, possibly several kilometres, away from their own frontlines, to those of the opposing forces? Needs more thought Willy.
