【His Majesty declared opening】 On July 23, 2021 (the 3rd year of Reiwa era in the traditional Japanese calendar), His Majesty the Emperor paid an imperial visit to the Japan National Stadium and the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games was held. His Majesty declared the opening in accordance with the Olympic Charter. The charter states that the head of state of the host country make an opening declaration and the fixed phrase. The Olympic Games will be held in Japan for the fourth time following the 1964 Summer Tokyo Games, the 1972 Winter Sapporo Games, and the 1998 Winter Nagano Games. In Tokyo and Sapporo the opening declaration was made by Emperor Showa(Hirohito), and in Nagano was made by His Majesty the Emperor Emeritus (The emperor of a generation ago, Akihito) . Japan set the record for the number of Olympics held in Asia, and at the same time became the only country to hold the Summer Olympics more than once in Asia.

2:20 For all the people who are not from Mexico, 10 days before the opening of the Olympics, one of the worst massacres in the history of Mexico took place On October 2, 1968, more than 300 students were assassinated at the hands of the army on the orders of the high command of the government, including the president. During the following days, the news was completely censored by the government so that the Olympics would not be canceled. It was a sad and shameful time for Mexico

There’s something weird about seeing Hirohito after WW2. Even after the Axis defeat and his other two allies meeting their fates before the wars end, he remained a popular public figure for the rest of his life through the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s

It was a deal between the Americans/MacArthur and the surviving Japanese government to leave the emperor alone as a symbol in exchange for otherwise total surrender. This may have helped stave off some resistance to the incoming occupation and allow for a smoother postwar transition. (At the cost of sweeping many things under the rug, of course, but what’s a few war criminals continuing in power when there are Communists to fight…)

From Spain I know that in the part of the Olympic Games in Barcelona the stands are not shown well and it may seem that there were few people in the stadium but I can say that there were 9364 athletes 6652 men and 2704 women from 169 national committees, Due to the changes political events that took place at the beginning of the 1990s, these were the first Olympic Games without boycotts of any kind, something unprecedented since Munich 1972. 2 After the dissolution of the USSR, the post-Soviet states participated with the Olympic flag under the name of the Unified Team , with the exception of the three Baltic republics that did attend as independent committees. And Germany, one of the greatest Olympic powers, participated as a unified state for the first time since 1964. Other notable events were the return of South Africa, absent in seven editions due to apartheid and the absence of Yugoslavia due to the international sanctions of the Balkan war. ; Its athletes competed as "independent participants" The concession of the Games served to promote the urban transformation of Barcelona, making these Olympic Games the second most successful and applauded games in the world after London 2012.

@@pinhowl6802 it really does justify it. It was German land. Anyways, Britain and France were starving to go to war regardless. They cited "polish independence" as a cause to declare war on Germany, but then let stalin do whatever the hell he wanted with poland after the war

The inauguration of the Olympic games in Helsinki (1952) is missing. The games should have been taken place in 1940. Due to the Winterwar it had to be replaced. I went recently to the Olympic stadium of Helsinki and was totally surprised by the Olympic tower next to the stadium which offers the visitors a great view of the beautiful city of Helsinki.
