Hey guys, I bumped into yet another deranged footy fan who thinks the VFL from 1897-1989 was completely different to the current AFL from 1990. I wonder how much evidence you can throw at dismantling that silly argument??

That's 1 thing the rest of the comp don't understand about this rivalry. It didn't start in 1997 nor did it start in 1991. Port are the SANFLs Collingwood. Anyone that supports a SANFL team either love Port, or hate them with the fiercest passion. Add to that the covert attempt to squeeze into the AFL and there is no rivalry like it. It's to bad that for the last couple seasons these teams are in 2 different places developmentally. It's hard to get as excited when you know your team are going to be creamed Anyway thank you for putting the spotlight on our state. Great video as always guys. Just the right amount of funny and informative

@@FootyA2Z it's always nice to have my opinions noticed! But I do have a tendency to go on a bit so hope I'm not to annoying there. I think that stat comes from the rivalry itself. Also if I'm remembering all of your video correctly you missed a great part of the rivalry with the Ramsgate hotel fight

Port Adelaide were given a lot less support than the GWS GIANTS and Gold Coast Suns or most other ‘interstate clubs’ upon entry because most were not already established. Though we did get zone selections from uncontracted players in SANFL clubs, even ones that weren’t Port Adelaide. We also got the ability to recruit 5 uncontracted players from other AFL clubs 2 first round picks from the National Draft. 💙🖤🤍🍐⚡️💪

However I knew about their so called entry in 1993 and thought they were stalling until the AFL gave the SANFL are controlling stake in the national competition. In reality, if it wasn't for Port who knows when SA would have entered the AFL? Probably nothing until the turn of the century.

Good summary of the recent history, the Crows formation, and the Port Adelaide transition to the AFL. You missed the fact that Port also won the first showdown at Adelaide Oval, You've also totally missed the significance of the hatred for Port Adelaide pre-1990. Port have not only been super successful, but they had competed in half of the grand finals ever played in the SANFL. They also didn't win a lot of early days flags like Norwood did, instead most were won when the comp was closer to full strength. This on-going dominance and strength meant that Port were every SANFL clubs greatest rival. Yes Norwood was Ports, but every other club's biggest rival was Port. The competiton was completely rooted around the ideal of you loved or hated Port. I lived it going to GF's in the 80's with a bus load of others all cheering for whomever was playing Port, except the Port fans. The sheer hatred of Port was already phenomenal, and was like a powder keg that exploded when the PAFC tried to move into the AFL. That hatred is and has always been far more extreme than any other rivalry, and the creation of the amalgamated Crows team, captured the Port Vs the rest mentality and meant from day 1, the rivalry was already number 1. Forget just 25 years of SA clubs AFL existence, this is a rivalry forged over 150 years, and is perfectly encapsulated in the Port Vs the rest structure that is the Crows V Port.

Pretty much. However footy fans were excited to see AFL in SA in the first year of the Crows and Port fans did have some interest in the inaugural Crows side as a few Port players from 1990 ascended from to the AFL Crows team. Keep in mind that the Crows had no reserves side, so the players who weren't selected for the Crows matches were sent back to their respective SANFL side to get match time. If I recall Port had up to 6 players playing for the Crows from year 1.

I honestly don't think the whole rivalry and dynamic between Port and Adelaide would work in the same way if they had gone with the Sharks and Green, Blue and White. Something about Adelaide having the traditional South Australian colours and a mascot that evoces the old "Croweater" name really allows it to seem more of a natural rival to Port.

I supported Port in the SANFL and had a passing interest in Brisbane Bears and Collingwood. I was happy to see SA win a flag in 97, but apart from that it was all Port all the time. You have to remember no one in SA gave a shit about the VFL pre-1991, our league was already a big and quality league, the years between 91-96 when Port finally got in were always littered with Port trying to also get in, as we started our push to enter in 1994, so we always thought we'd be in the AFL one day and only a small number of Port supporters abandoned the club for the Crows.

That is a pretty good summary, however, I think it would be great to update the story by covering why Port have the catch phrase and pre-game song of "Never tear us apart". It is the story of jealousy and pettiness by other SANFL clubs who, via the SANFL, actively tried to sabotage Port Adelaide (both AFL and SANFL teams) by setting rules in place that effectively served to split the two Port teams. (I am forever p*ssed off that Max Basheer has his name on a grandstand at the Adelaide Oval) Thankfully, that rubbish is now over. Port is the only club team from outside the VFL to join the AFL - all the rest are composites, and our history speaks for itself.

Tried to go behind the SANFL's back and compromise the entire league for their own benefit, thats the true Port Adelaide tradition, always willing to throw whoever under the bus as long as Port gets its way. Scumbag club with a stolen history that should've gone broke years ago if not for the AFL and SANFL. 🤣 port backstabbed Norwood and the SANFL. Norwood paid half of ports debt allowing them to continue, you would’ve liquidated the club had Norwood not rescued you! Additionally, Norwood and port were offered afl licences, but refusal at the time eventuates into the crows. Then port, the greedy bastards, backstabbed the SANFL and made a bid. Not to mention they let the maglie die that day, no one that supports the magpies truly, goes to many (or any) power games, and vice versa. It needs to be said, the ‘magpies’ are the power ressies. End of.

Utter garbage. Port played Judas on the SANFL. Once West Coast entered a SANFL entry was inevitable and became a phase of brokering the best entry deal. It was an open agreement amongst the 10 clubs that an entry would be undertaken with the support of the SANFL,whether that be a composite,Port,Norwood or other. Norwood was offered a licence but respectfully declined. Port breeched that process and was rightfully ostracised and as punishment for it’s duplicity should never have received the second licence.

Port Adelaide and the rest of the SANFL sounds like the rivalry between Williamstown and Port Melbourne back in the day, they hated each other, the fans fought just because the other person was wearing the opposing jumper, nothing else. Constant brawls were a thing, if you were a williamstown fan and wanted to go to a port melbourne home game against the towners......You had to go in a group, otherwise there was a decent chance you would get belted, no matter how nice you were and vise versa for Port fans.

Calling yourselves the team for all south australians just makes you look like dicks! Your not the state team the state team is the state team! Any football club worth its salt represents its'self to not do so would be foolish.

bloody sanfl. the old dinosuars ruined the the game in SA. 2 chances to have a team in the big league and they screwd it up. it took port to force their hand and apply for a licence for the crows. now both sides are in and the sanfl is raking in 100's of millions from the 2 afl clubs and the sanfl is getting worse to watch every week

Fun fact the very first Australian Rules Football team in South Australia was the Adelaide Football Club, know as now the Old Adelaide Football Club that was established in1860 and wore black and red. The Adelaide Football Club established in 1990 adopted the name from the states first ever team. Sure there isn't any direct link because the 1860 Old Adelaide Football Club which was dissolved in 1893 but the name was always Adelaide first before Port ever existed in 1870. The Adelaide Football Club was first in both paths to South Australian and then national football history.

Sadly its a manufactured rivalry in a largely soulless, expanded VFL mish-mash. The opportunity to have the great Port-Norwood rivalry gracing the AFL was missed which would’ve dwarfed the Crows/Port conflict. We have Port’s clandestine entry to blame for that. Norwood,by rejecting the VFL’s overtures consigned themselves to history.
