I was planning on purchasing a new car when and if I made it home from Vietnam in 1970. I'd always been a Chevy guy, but Plymouth/Chrysler was coming out with some sharp new models in 1969 and '70 that caught my 20 year-old eyes. I couldn't decide between a Plymouth GTX or Plymouth Duster. I made it home after my tour in 'Nam and 8 month stay in hospitals after getting wounded in December of '69. I chose the Duster, (because of Sox & Martin) and four months after buying it I rolled it over in February, 1970 because of black ice on highway that hadn't been sanded yet. The car ended up on it's roof, and was a total loss. I escaped with a broken and very bloody nose, which was nothing after what happened to me in Vietnam. Seeing this GTX video immediately brought back that time in my life. I guess I should have gone with the Plymouth GTX...

@selene8302 Problem was, it wasn't JUST a Duster if you catch my drift. Automobile really didn't matter to me as long as I came out of it unscathed. I could always buy another car...even a Ford if I was hard up!! LOL!!

My 1970 Duster 340 could take those big block GTX's for a while but couldn't hang with them on the big end. Beautiful car for sure.

Had a GTX 440 cu in in high school orange and black 6 pack. That was one fast car...dana 60 rear axle 727 transmission. Trak pak set up had a tic tok tach Air grabber scoop with a switch.

I once owned a 68 gtx 440 auto that was yellow with vinyl top. It also had the Dana with a police suspension package with front disc. Only had 65000 miles on it. I put cragar street super trick wheels on it , sixtys on back seventys on front lowered the front just a little ! Hey it was 1979

Had one of these! I bought a 70 440 cuda and hated it - way too much engine for a light car. Went back and made a deal on a 69 GtX 440. Far better car. Best car I ever owned.

Very nice, nicer than my '68 GTX for sure - but there's no such thing as "frame-off" with a Mopar, since they're unit-bodied construction (no separate frame). Good luck with the sale. - Ed on the Ridge

1969 440 tnt 4-speed gtx 1978 Alaska I had a 67 Barracuda my buddys car was the gtx I dared him to drop the hammer on it one summer day because he did not belive it would pull the wheels well he got a surprise LOL love it nice car man .

1968 Plymouth Road Runners and Plymouth GTX had factory Inland shifters, In 1969 Hurst got the contractor for the shifters

Early 68's got Inland shifters, but late 68 cars got the switch to Hurst shifters and have a reverse indicator light on the dash, because the Hurst shifters didn't have a reverse lockout. On this one, you can see the reverse light in front of the shifter.

Thank You for the update. my friend had a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner 383 with the inland shifter with the reverse lock out, maybe his got out of the factory I don't know. I'm not making this up,I personally drive the car later he replaced the shifter also his Road Runner ran with the 440 's, it was a super fast car. Thank You and have a fantastic week.

No super trac pack in 1968. Dana 60 only came with 3.54 gears in 1968. Super trac pack was 4.10 gears and wasn’t offered until 1969.

Whoever would've ordered a GTX without a tach or Air Grabber intakes should be - - - -!! Sounds wonderful! Bet the neighbors love the "on the way to work" cold start at 6:30am in the morning Otherwise, absolutely gorgeous car! 😊😊😊

@@marksanzone4948 Optional in 69 on GTX and Road Runner with all engines. The hood is basically the same, 68 no air grabber offered 69 no air grabber 69 with optional air grabber but the slats were replaced with ones with an upward face in 69 and they had closed plates with ridges in most cars. If you ordered the air grabber, they had a solid plate with many tiny openings and all the ducting underneath. I personally think the treatment on the 68 cars is more elegant than the 69's.

I had one of these in 1973 while I was in the Marines stationed at MCAS Yuma Az.. Mine was green. Honestly, nothing and no one ever beat me in a quarter mile. That molar could really move the mail! I got it up to 140 mph on the interstate towards Phoenix but the car started to float so I backed off. I sold it to another Marine in California. Who knew?

Beautiful car but the ugly tach would have to go. Us old guys can tell by the sound off the engine when to shift. We can also tell how high the RPM are before we leave the live. We also don’t race a car that nice because we know it’s understood it can take you and we don’t have to prove it!

Go ahead and race it. It will end up totaled or with a blown engine or transmission or both. If you want to race build a car for the track or strip. Don’t try to prove you’re the fastest. There is always someone faster. Abusing a car like that only proves you don’t know what you have.

I went to the drag strip and was next to a car with open headers and I could not hear my own engine at all. So I shifted in all the wrong places.

That's too much I believe it though people are nuts a website here on KZfaq called Southern motors has a red six-pack roadrunner with the Lift-Off hood for only 80 grand worth way more than the one pictured here it's even got a 410 rear gear look up Southern motors here on KZfaq it's been on there for like 3 or 4 weeks down or maybe a little longer they still have it
