39 aircraft, over 1.8 Billion Kilometres flown over 29 years of service and for one last time, these pair of CF6's, powering a Qantas 767 were started up, ready and raring to go just as they had upon delivery a quarter of a century ago.
At 06:28UTC, VH-OGL, bid her second home a classic farewell with her stock standard rocket like departure. Prior to this, the crew and ground staff were in party mode. Balloons, show bags and commemorative t-shirts were among the touching memories that will stay with not only myself yet the rest of the aviation community that was onboard, experiencing history first hand!!
With a water canon salute to wish -OGL all the best, it was time for the CF-6's to be given one last test; to put on a show rather. And a show it was indeed!!
Now, being a few hours post the flight, it honestly hasn't hit Tom or I that not only were we on the beautiful 767, yet we were on her last flight. As I wake up tomorrow, the reality of not having a Qantas 767 in the sky will be real.
As I said in yesterday's video, it is not a time to mourn a loss, yet it is time to celebrate. As Dr. Seuss said, "why cry that it's over, be happy it's happened"; this being one thing all of us can take away from this occasion. BE HAPPY IT HAS HAPPENED.
So I will not bid my own personal farewell now, instead I will wait until tomorrow night's video where you will be able to see a multi camera view of countless, low flyby's of the Sydney CBD that we performed and most importantly, you will be able to watch the approach from post flyby's to the water canon salute to the final touchdown.
Don't forget that next Saturday at 14:30 UTC, our short film, celebrating the life and service of the Qantas 767, featuring cockpit footage from the final flight; will be posted to KZfaq and countless social media sites. So please, stay tuned to witness something special.
Please enjoy the final time you will ever hear a pair of Qantas 767 CF-6 engines, go all out, rocketing the aircraft above and beyond land in which it will cease to return.
Thank you,
AJ
