For the Love of Dogs...and All Beings - Tara Brach
The focus of this conversation is on our relationships with dogs, and more broadly, all beings. We look at what Thich Nhat Hanh called "interbeing", and what happens when we shift our attention from self to "who are we together?"
Tara is joined by Mark Drucker, an animal lover who works in digital media and is founder of Love, Dog (www.lovedog.com), and Drew Webster, a dog behavior consultant par excellence.
In this recording, Tara is being interviewed for their podcast and found herself deeply impacted by the conversation. She reports that she and her 6 month old pup Niki play more. Her attention has deepened and she is more awake in their relationship, and of course that extends out to the world of relationships.
So whether you have a dog, cat, favorite tree, or human to practice on, bringing attention to interbeing means more belonging, aliveness, and love.

I think most pet owners can take this conversation to heart. The way we seem to love our pets in current times is different than I remember when growing up in the 60’s. Yeah, people got sad back in the day, but seemed to not really grieve very long after their pet died or had to be put down. Now, it seems different. People seem much more emotionally attached to their pets than ever before. Not sure if I was just looking at it from a child’s perspective but I know, with all the dogs I’ve ever owned & loved, that came into my life, it rocked me to the core when they were no longer here. The grief was as difficult as losing a human family member and took just as long to finally reconcile their departure. A dogs’ love for their human is pure, unconditional and non-judgmental. I think our love for them is the same.

Quite surprisingly, this conversation allowed me to release some grief that has been stuck in me for about seven years now. When you started talking about grieving the loss of dogs, I started crying and my heart literally hurt. I can’t remember the last time I cried - it felt really healing. I think it was because I wasn’t expecting it. Thank you!

The connection (and loss) between “us” and our furry, feathered and fishy friends is of a profundity indescribable in human words. I love the acknowledgment of that essence in this episode … 🙏❤️

I so enjoyed this. You conveyed love for all animals so eloquently. I especially liked the Percy poem I’ve shared it with so many others and I know they too will send it to their friends and family.

Thank-you so much for this tender, wise conversation. I especially appreciated you all including the sentience and suffering of other animals including the most tortured beings in our world…those we raise for food. Veganism is such an instant, powerful way of opting out of causing that suffering. For me (formerly a HUGE animal eater), I couldn’t believe the difference going vegan made in my heart and conscience. My capacity for love and compassion has increased so much. 🩵

Where do our pets go when they die? Do the Buddhist teach about a place they go?

Buddhists believe in samsara, which means there is no dying and there is no birth, only rebirth until we reach enlightenment. Animals are included in the cycle. What your pet will be reborn as, depends on her kamma, which is the starstuff we are all made of originally. If your pet was a very good boy/girl (which I am certain they were) you will meet them again and again in lives future and past until you both become Buddha to help others acheive enlightenment.
