Brené is such a gift. So inspiring = “We all grew up… armored up… and at some point that armor no longer serves us. How is not talking about this serving you? And now the weight of the armor is too heavy. It’s not protecting you. It’s keeping you from being seen and known by others. This is THE developmental milestone of midlife. It’s not a crisis. It’s a slow, brutal unraveling... But you can replace the armor with something: curiosity."

the weak need armor; the armor is code for something outside of yourself, that you then place on yourself. once you admit your weakness and bankruptcy, you can turn your vulnerable skin into armor. who cares if 6 billion people hate your guys, call me fat, ugly, stupid - I don't care whatsoever. you cannot be seen and known by others and why would you need that? the weak need that - Eagles fly alone. Jesus was a way nicer person than me and didn't have millions of friends of Facebook.

@@tmack62 i think a narcissist feels like if they are not special they are nothing, shattered, obliterated or just a worthless pile of human of no use to anyone & better off dead, so yes fear is a huge driver. Without the sense of "specialness" about themselves, their self seems to disintegrate, so that is a very scary feeling....

People come for the message, they stay for the personality. Brené delivers the message in a way that we can hear. And while we’re enjoying her company, with our heads exploding with AHA MOMENTS, getting enlightened while being entertained, she lives what she’s saying. So she brings it on home to our hearts and minds.

Tim - because of you I'm 27 years old and I'm living my dreams, working from my laptop anywhere in the world, helping + coaching + teaching people and getting paid more per month than I ever could have dreamed of earning in a year in my corporate job. When I read the 4-hour workweek in college it just sparked this knowing / truth inside of me, I knew I was meant for that life and although it took me 5-6 years to finally start my business.. when I did, it took off fast. You writing that book was the catalyst for a completely different life for me that has been more fulfilling than I ever knew was possible. So I just wanted to say thank you for having the courage, and vulnerability ;) to write YOUR truth, in only the way that you can. Your work in this world matters and I love you.

Complacency v Self Acceptance: I really like the way Jordan Peterson puts it: "You're not as good as you could be, but that doesn't mean you're worse than other people." To me, it's this idea that part of being human is having room to grow, and that your need to improve isn't a bug, it's a feature of being a person.

33:33 When responding to Tim's admitted fear of alienating some of his foundational audience ("the go getters" lets just call em) by being more interested in the "softer" or messier "inner-game" stuff lately, Brene masterfully notes the contrast between "practices that improve measurable efficiency" and the "practice of real self-awareness/acceptance/evolution" being linear vs. nonlinear processes. Inner psychological development is much more like a garden, there are observable trends to organic change but it's mixed in with systems of chaos like weather and species competition, etc. Balancing patience with myself with the right amount of directed pressure around a very simple plan has been my central life issue lately and if anything, these kind of conversations will have my fuller attention. Excited to see more discussions around this paradox of inner growth/surrender vs outer world creative productivity: Taken to both extremes, you have the far side of woo saying you really need to "accept the reality you want" before you can get there and the Universe will just take care of it "when you have your inner world right"; on the extreme opposite "just do it" side, you have people suggesting that growth and success simply need to be "hacked" and your willpower simply strengthened and forced thru ritual systems, a cold and linear achievement process.

@feosTAS
@feosTAS 3 жыл бұрын
I'd argue you need to master both eventually, to be able to professionally operate between the 2 extremes, constantly improving your balancing skills. Cold and linear achievement process is learning to deal with daily grind and not losing your temper, Jock calls this discipline. You need tons and tons of boring training to be able to perform when your muse finally arrives. So while the creativity is not there, master the hardware part of the techniques. Then whenever you feel inspired, you'll reach much further after all this prior training. To reject the rules of musical theory when your creativity demands that, you need to know those rules first. To overcome yourself, you need to know your limits first.

Brené, here's why I think your message resonates so well with so many women, especially. (To chime in on the first question Tim asked you.) It's because the topics you bring to light as being the most valuable-vulnerability, having honest discussions, acknowledging emotions, and so on-those are feminine skills that our society completely devalues, despises, ridicules and relegates to the sidelines. Your work lifts up the incredible power and strength of the feminine, not to mention its utter necessity for human wholeness and connection. That's why we love you.

The inner game isn't just mental, it's also vibrational so you are going to stay in energetic communication with your audience Tim :) I've run into the same thing through 20+ years in autism work, moving from behavioral (outer) focus to mindset/mental/inner focus to now moving beyond even that and training my clients to think about "woo woo" topics energetic entrainment with their child. You can't stay where you were 10 years ago even if you wanted to, your people are going to grow with you and those that fall away will be replaced with new ones. That's been my experience anyway, on a much smaller scale with private practice.

A HEALTHY DIALOGUE between two intellectuals. Both are LISTENING. Which is part of communication. 👍 And *listening* is something we often don't see on tv, interviews, or even get to experience in our day to day living. There's a saying: 'We have one mouth and two ears for a reason'. 💯

"We're all ordinary people. But I think sometimes this world is tough because we shame and diminish ordinary. Ordinary lives are small lives. You know, ordinary moments are ... you know, you chase extraordinary moments instead of being grateful for ordinary moments until ... Until hardship happens, and then in the face of really hard stuff, illness, death, loss, the only thing we're begging for is a normal moment. Like, oh my god girl, can I please have that ordinary moment back? Can I please hear him come through the screen porch door? Can I please get a call from my mom or crazy text? Then we want the ordinary moment." Kind of prophetic to know this occurred just before we shut the US down for the pandemic in March, 2020. This is the place I think we are all at a year later.

28:24 Stop and remember that the problems as you see it with other people are your own problems, addictions to taking control of others, outcomes that you’re projecting. For example, if you accept your spouse as an alcoholic and recognise that you have a job to do, which does not involve changing him/her, and you instead recognise why you get triggered when this person is incapacitated by his illness, maybe this meaning you have to find your own dysfunction/addict and resolve the matter within yourself, you’ll have the right energy to take care of you, dependents and thrive, and maybe but maybe by healing yourself, you will have a healing influence o. Those around you.

Tim I am definitely a 'ra ra, hustle hustle' type of guy, but that's what I do for fun! The reason I began listening to your show was that there were amazing people on the show that I sought to learn from, overtime however this shifted into me coming back FOR YOU. The amount of preparation you put into an interview is apparent. It's no longer about the "here's how to get rich or ultra-productive" for me, it's about hearing different world views and "success" stories - whatever that means for you. I think fame and wealth are great successes, but for many success can look like helping others, finding life purpose, finding happiness, always striving to improve, etc., My point being is that it's different for everyone, even the ra ra guys. Please please don't worry about your audience. I work with a lot of bigger musicians in my job and I constantly tell them this, it's ironic because I have to tell myself this! Your audience started following you for a gamut of reasons, the reason they will continue to follow you (if they choose to do so) will usually not be the reason they came to you in the first place. So, follow your interest and vision for the show - don't worry about appealing to us.

Bruce Tift. Another Buddhist Psychiatrist, Dr. Mark Epstein is really worth exploring. Thoughts Without a Thinker was my first dive but The Trauma of Everyday Life is a great read too. Everytime I listen to Dr. Brown, I always forget that she is a, "doctor". I bet when she wrote her thesis she had absolutely no idea how many people she would heal through her research work, but especially through her, as a person, a vulnerable and sensitive human being workin it out as best as she can, facing her fear and the hot lights of a stage with unmitigated courage. Listening to her, I'm always reminded of Pema Chödrön's first book, "The Wisdom of No Escape" which launched me out of my deepest depression, like a rail spike through my forehead, followed by nothing short of a miracle, Pure Peace and Joy. I'm so grateful that All of you exist and share your Real selves, your thoughts and fears, self doubts and growth. Thank you so much.

1. 25 year old Rush fan here! 2. I have to say, after getting out of an abusive relationship and going gung-ho on educating myself on narcissists and NPD, I’ve seen a lot of research pointing away from shame for the root of narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). People who are the victims of such people need to accept that sure your abuser has issues, but it’s not your job to endure such treatment, fix them, or let pity for them overtake your own struggle. 3. Thank you for your work, Dr. Brown, your work has been instrumental in my recovery from that 17-month hellhole. Almost three months free!

Being productive and achieving I think are some of the biggest misconceptions of our era. It’s like we feel we’re not enough and need to prove something through them. When we create through this feeling of lack the results are rarely positive or helpful for anyone. The actions come from ego and end up full filling only ego. Stop and do nothing for a bit, might be the best thing you’ll do all day.

Brene' Brown shares language and an authenticity that truly forces me to question life. She defines self acceptance, juggling high achieviement, and making room for this moment in such a way that the process remains worth it. Drawing lines. Redefining excellence. Choosing my best self now. Mid life shifts. "Change", is the greatest key, oxymoron, word, that I walk away with in this moment. Thank you both for all you do. #love #pandoras box #armour #unraveling #curious #superpowers

Watching this now amidst the coronavirus pandemic & Brené what you said about in times of illness, death, crisis is when we want the ordinary, when we realise striving for the extra- ordinary is meaningless, so true right now in this pandemic globally we are all resorting to our ordinary lives to survive, the basic survival to stay home & embrace your unique, individual ordinariness. powerful🙏❤

I really enjoyed the discussion about self acceptance and complacency. I’ve kind of come to view it from the lens of permanence. What can or cannot be changed. Sometimes it means accepting something ‘for now’ while I commit to change. By doing this I avoid complacency. Sometimes it means learning to live with the outcome of what can’t. It was nice to hear I’m not the only person who struggles with that.
