@@Neyobe Daylilies in particular are not toxic to dogs the same way other/true lilies are, but they're still likely to cause indigestion. Best for everyone to keep all pets away from all types of lilies. :) You are technically correct though yes

make sure that they are day lillies if they are true lilies, eating them may kill you. YOu can tell if it is a day lily because it has grass-like leaves near the base with a separate stem for its flowers, true lilies have leaves along its entire stem

You absolutely can eat Day Lilies. Just be sure it's not a look alike. If you want to try the open flower, which I prefer, just remember, they are DAY Lilies. Meaning harvest them when they open. I much prefer them over the unopened flower. I've never had the tubers.

Tried it today in South western PA, it was good, a lot like potatoes with a hint of a flavor near the outer layer that I have nothing to compare it with. Was a decent amount of work to clean and was a small yield for the amount of work, but the tubers on the plants here were pretty small. Still enjoyed doing it though. Ive been around these plants my whole life and never tried eating them before. Great to know they can be eaten and we have them in abundance!

The open flower is a beautiful decoration on cakes or ice cream. Or put the very mild, slightly sweet petals in a salad. In Sweden, where I live, the day lilies are not invasive at all. The old varieties (which to my knowledge are the edible ones) mostly grow near old homesteads, telling where people once lived. I felt very lucky to find a patch of old variety day lilies in my garden when we bought our small 300 year old farm 12 years ago.

Thanks for showing the day lily uses. Young Hosta plant is edible and tastes similar to asparagus. A plant called Vetch is a high protein legume. It is thought of as a weed, it is a nitrogen-fixing cover crop. People also pickle Vetch.

I've been teaching myself foraging, and have found that using plant identifying aps, and thoroughly researching about a plant on multiple sources to ensure consistency in information, and to ensure I identify it right. Best advice I can offer is; take your time, be thorough, and also your local library may have books on local foraging you can get into. Also, look into WHERE you forage, public parks often get sprayed with pesticides or other chemicals, but if you get out to the woods and hike, then you are safer to forage without too much fear. Keep in mind too, some plants will absorb from other local or nearby plants, and this could make them toxic, another reason to be patient, thorough and read a lot. Good luck! And happy foraging!

yes! I recently saw a documentary about chinese cuisine and how they use lily bulbs in their foods, and to grow them bigger, they just cut off the flowers (which they use in other dishes) so that the plant can store it's energy in the roots, rather than use the energy to bloom flowers!
