I heard wonderful things from ActualLol about this game and I’ve been a big fan of the rest of the series. I’ve loved Game Night and one of the reasons I enjoy it so much is how much like a real group you can be. Sometimes we’ve played games as a group and something is just...off. A frustrating day at work, family problem or just a bad day and it’s hard not to bring that to the table in a million little ways that can colour the game. This feels like a session where folks lacked some of the usual joy and camaraderie that is so typical to your group. It’s hard to tell how much this is the game (a heavily alpha gamer coop where your every placement decision has lasting effects) and how much it’s just “one of those days.” Hope everyone is ok and thank you for Game Night 🙂

I'm a little bit disappointed that the game doesn't include the possibility to make a deal with darth vader so the sky is not forbidden anymore. But you would still need the power for the carbon freezing chamber i guess.... Maybe it will be possible in an expansion.

I believe that your preference it is because Dave teach like any of us teach a game to friends, Rodney do it in a professional manner and more streamlined for a different audience. Anyway the top three not in order are Dave, Rodney and Paul Grogan.
@dkiprijanovski
@dkiprijanovski 5 жыл бұрын
@sayuiv, to be honest, I rarely watch Rodney's "HOW TO" videos, although I watch his other content almost all of it. I know how he teaches, and he teaches mainly through the rulebook as he does it through a video (as if you were reading it). However, as a game teacher mainly in my groups, I find teaching the game not always starts and goes through like in the rulebook. And I tend to read a lot of them since I entered this lovely hobby. I tend to find a faster, more meaningful, and even easier way to explain the mechanisms and the theme as well, and also go into strategy here and there, for the new players. Maybe I find that in Dave, especially when he explains stuff even during the game strategy-wise, and also during his explanations. We do that in new games with new players all the time. Maybe I tend to teach more like him (as you said) and that is why I like his way of teaching more. Again, Rodney's great in doing it, but It is not my style of teaching. Sorry for that elaborate explanation. Have a nice one and keep on gaming :D Daniel

I think this was Dave's worse explanation of a game I have watched (still ok though) He seems agitated or jaded in the last few videos. No obvious reference to forbidden Island or desert as starting points which would have been a natural thing to do....this is basically a weird mashup of Tsuro and Forbidden Desert

Unrelated to the game.. love Nikki's tee on this one! As a huge Matt Leacock fan it's interesting to see you play it, it seemed to take a lot longer than I thought it would (based on the other games in the series).

I think they got the timing of the event cards vs the gear cards wrong. In the other Matt Leacock games, once you reveal an event card (lightning strike, etc) then it must be fully resolved before you can play any gear cards. If that's still true in this game, then at 49:00 Nikki couldn't have used her strike shield after the lightning strike was revealed. She would have had to either use it before they revealed the card or taken the hit then used strike shield to prevent further damage. For example, in Pandemic if you reveal an epidemic card, you have to fully resolve the epidemic before you can play anything in response to it. Regardless, I loved the video and am excited to see a 4th member of the Matt Leacock holy trinity of games (Pandemic, Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert).

it seemed very clunky as if it wasn't quite worked out..its almost as if they said ...instead of things getting more restrictive on a sinking island we will set it in the sky where the play area is expanded...oh ligntning and wind can hurt...oh lets use almost identical characters as the last games...seemed a very lazy game design to me

Thanks for the video guys. But my god, the game is so abstract compared to the rest in the series, from the artwork to the "capacitors" and "faraday cages", all the way to the clouds and the connecting-via-one-line-at-least. The theme feels so pasted, Knizia would be proud. Good to see new faces, hi Jennifer. Good stuff guys, and Dave, you're going a tiny bit too hard on the alpha thing... ;)
@PandaOfElastic
@PandaOfElastic 5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like they're connecting theme 100% to art. I agree that the art is extremely meh (especially when compared to the previous games), but I feel the game is VERY thematic. All of the mechanisms make sense. The wind blowing you around, the lightning hitting and following wires, the faraday cages protecting you from lightning. It all makes sense. You're not doing things just "because mechanics". Certainly makes more sense than sections of the earth moving in Forbidden Desert.

I had the same reaction. The 20-minute explanation of the game rules made it sound more complex than it needed to be, the gameplay felt more like sitting in a DMV, and I kept getting distracted by the blinking/winking of the guy explaining the game. I think I will stick with Forbidden Island & Forbidden Desert and definitely pass on this one.

You know... Sometimes, it's just fun to play the game for the sake of playing. I'm watching these videos and every move is debated endlessly. Sure, I get it, the goal is to win the game but there were situations when three players excitedly agreed on something and the fourth one stepped in and went "really? Do we really need to do that?" Let the poor beggars do it, let's see what happens after that, have some spontaneity. I'm starting to think co-op games can never be played in a relaxed manner... Not every move has to be dissected and sterile :D

yes I think they suffer in the respect that they are too experienced playing games....interestingly they have played other games at much high starting levels but did not on this one? The on tile copper wires and clouds make it so the tiles can't have artworks on them, and are essentially just areas seen from above. I find that disappointing. The tile placing rather than flipping is also something I find a little off putting because it was so essential to the first two games. However at it's core you can tell it is still very similar to the others and I like the uptake in complexity brought on by having to worry about both health and rope. I will definitely be picking it up but I think Desert will probably remain my favorite.

My gut reaction is that this is really fiddly. Seems like the weakest of the 3 games... or else it's just the heaviest of them and my perceptions of the earlier two is tainting this. Certainly, there's been a complexity increase from Island to Desert to Sky.

I don't mean fiddly in that it has a lot of bits. I mean the tile placement rules and tracking connections and such.
@heccubus1
@heccubus1 5 жыл бұрын
As you can see the connections were a bit confusing. I love the art but the way that you can have stunted connections plus dead end components (circuits, capacitors, launch pad) make this visually confusing. Plus we all had a bit of trouble visualizing the circuits without seeing them. Having said that I really like what the game is doing. It is fun trying to make it all come together. Had we played those two tiles correctly we might have had a tougher game. Thanks for the note and for watching. -Lincoln
