Saky Airbase: Examining the theories behind the explosions

Speculation continues over a series of explosions that rocked one of Russia's largest airbases in Crimea.
The attack, at Saky, on the Black Sea coast, sent huge fireballs into the sky with experts suggesting it may have been a long-range drone strike, or even a missile strike, by Ukrainian forces.
Ukrainian officials suggested it was the work of saboteurs or their own Special Forces, while Russia's defence ministry denied the base had been attacked, instead claiming a weapons store had caught fire.

Here's my theory: ruzzian recon spotted an Ukrainian farmer with his tractor headed toward the airbase. They immediately radioed this intelligence back to the base, where an order was given to immediately destroy all aircraft, munitions, and fuel. The base commander will, undoubtedly, receive the award of Hero of the Ruzzian Federation, posthumously.

I also saw one possibility : a commando strike that landed nearby (it's close to the sea), infiltrated the airbase, placed explosives on anything that goes boom, then detonated it all. Ukraine already did that months ago to an helicopter base on the other side of the Dniepr, but doing that in Crimea would be even more daring, while showing dreadful gaps in russian defensive systems.
@KierMailan
@KierMailan Жыл бұрын
Likely special forces with partisans in Russian Crimea. It could still be from HIMARS or even gps guided missiles from Ukranian jets both just barely in range while Russia has poor defense systems. Clearly the ammunition depots would blown up regardless. When you look at the satellite photos there are barely any craters at all to resemble a HIMARS strike. The lack of footage of missiles flying in the sky even momentarily, there are lots of people in Crimea outside on the beachs even. And many of the jets show prolonged burning/an explosion at their very precise spots. I wouldn't rule out missiles did this. But it is possible with Russian passport holding partisans on the inside and the special forces already behind enemy lines which we've already seen that they were blown up with explosives/sabotage.

Infiltrating a frontline airbase during a war in broad daylight is a tall order. Yes kerch bridge might be next, and no doubt Ukraine can get the job done. And no I don't think himars was fired from aircraft, doesn't make sense. Cuz Ukraine only has older soviet jets, also it would still have to come within range of russian airdefense, while if you use the long range Atacm then you can just launch it from the ground cuz it has a 300km range. But on satellite image u can that the jets are picked off like 1 by 1. As I heard suicide drones were probably the case, got a range of at least 40km, but they would use patrol boats that US provided, get within range & launch. Otherwise it wouldn't be possible to hit all these aircraft, as they had some protection around them too. Force News, your AFU scenarios for the Novofedorivka Air Base attack are too nebulous. Let's apply occurs razor to the discussion. The Novofederivka Air Base event has the earmarks of a Spetsnaz attack and the AFU has an estimated 4000 Spetsnaz troops. However, timing is a critical flaw in any Spetsnaz attack plan requiring penetration of a secure air base. Murphy's law is likely to be a show stopper for obvious reasons. Namely, access difficulties, fake IDs, discovery, complex explosive transport issues, and escape exigencies. There is a simpler solution to that dilemma. Thirteen miles NW of the center of the base's runway is an infantry training facility at Lymanne. It is somewhat remote and appears active, but little used. The camp has trench work and firing ranges, and is served by the small Lymanne airstrip adjacent to it. The base would provide a relatively safe location to assemble the attack components. Interdicting fire from the Lymanne base, or from any road-served location closer to the Novofedorivka would be feasible options. Fire from an array of relatively short range weapons, corrected by a couple of observers located in buildings overlooking the Novofederivka airfield, or a variety of remote reconnaissance means would vastly simplify the operation. The ensuing conflagration at Novofedoriveka would obscure the attack in progress and facilitate escape options.

Special forces would not need much in the way of explosives to do a huge amount of damage. Fuel trucks and explosions associated with them can create a cascade effect as would fuel in aircraft. The possibilities are numerous of how special forces or even saboteurs could do a large amount of damage to an airbase that is laid out in the way that one is. It is obvious though that their safety measures did not work...

Occam's Razor - ok well : Six SpecOps could much more easily infil/exfil by sea (only 2km away) under cover of the previous night. With just a few kilos of C4 each in spread time-delayed charges placed near or on munitions and fuel trucks/containers. Probably less than 30 minutes total exposure. Standard MO would have a couple of initial detonations to bring everyone out for damage limitation, then main (simultaneous) detonations to inflict max casualties on military & civilian contract personnel as well as materiél.

Theory #1: Done by armed suicide drones, maybe a 600 Switchblade which carries same warhead as the Javelin, but modified to fit the drone's profile. The drones hit the exposed above ground storage of ammo clusters, resulting the large craters, at least three, that are seen in the sat photos of before and after....in the before image note the location of the three ammo sites and corresponding craters perfectly overlayed in the after image. How the drones got there, I suspect brought in and used by special op of small team or two, and launched somewhere within 25-50 radius of airfield. Theory #2: The small stealth drone boats that everyone has forgotten about. These drone boats supplied early in war by U.S. carry Hellfire missiles. The Hellfire has a short range, but highly accurate, so given the proximity of airfield to sea, maybe so.

The one thing the UkA has admitted to, is that "only Ukrainian weapons" were used.. Another left-field suggestion has been adapted Neptune missiles fired maybe from Odessa. But even I find that a bit farfetched :)
@pete49327
@pete49327 Жыл бұрын
@@coolersmoke You're correct, so that would rule out the Switchblade or drone boat, but maybe Ukraine comment served its purpose, i.e. infuse mystery on what weapon and method was used. Another theory bandied about is infiltration of the base by small team and placement of explosives directly on the munitions, then triggered remotely. If that is accurate, wow, hard to believe a base full of attack aircraft would be so unguarded, and this happened in daylight.

I will point out that ATACMS is not the only long range precision missile on the planet, and also that the USA is not the only country with a supply of them. I do notice it was the spots nearest the coast that were hit. Good old fashioned time delay charges and a small boat is another possibility.

Idea. Switchblade munitions from several miles away. Target the ammo and fuel. When tons of explosives and fuel detonate the over pressure will rupture and crush everything. Look at the related photos of cars parked next to the air base. Using switchblades no commando has to actually risk getting near the wire, no noise, no radar signature.

The huge metal beam that went through a car was probably from the building at 45.092202, 33.585088. I make the distance from that building to the car at about 360m -- too far for the kind of improvised explosive they might have deployed using a drone, in fact, that distance might be more than you might expect from the 150kg warhead of the Neptune.. More likely the building was used to arm the AC with weapons and some of those weapons cooked off resulting in a substantial explosion. Also, many of the AC were in revetments that should have protected them from being destroyed by nearby explosions or fire and that suggests to me that multiple smaller weapons were used to target them individually. Other than the building and one AC at the right of the sat image I don't see any obvious cratering so it appears that directed weapons were used. My guess is that a Ukrainian Spec Ops team set charges on the AC and then beat feet before the SHTF. Whatever it was it was HUGELY effective.

Russia blaming their own soldiers incompetence rather than Ukranian competence is laughable. But it's even better if Ukraine and the allies support that idea.
