A momentum shift in the Ukraine war means Russian defeat rather than victory is now "inevitable", according to a former commander of US Army Europe.
Retired Lieutenant General Ben Hodges says the outcome of the war comes down to "the will of the West versus the Kremlin".

Last week I was staying with friends near a large UK military base. I was up early and walking round the garden just after 0600, when sustained small arms fire started. I asked my friend and he grinned, "that's our Ukrainians, they hit the ranges early and stay there all the hours God sends"

I hate Putin who is a strong man portrait dictator, but can't ignore violence committed against ethnic russian population of Ukraine by Ukrainian armed forced back by U.S, the best solution is to make Ukraine surrendered the eastern ethnic russian areas to russia, and sign peace treaty with Ukraine being the buffer zone between NATO and Russia, and NATO can only deploy troops in Ukraine when there is a invasion started by Russian or Belarusian side, but no one like compromise this solution is impractical.

The best leaders, generals or politicians, are those who can see their mistakes, admit them, and make prompt course corrections. This is precisely why Putin's Stupid Military Operation is doomed - he is surrounded by yes men who fear for their lives if caught in the wrong. Ukraine and its Western supporters, on the other hand, have mostly clear-headed, honest thinkers in charge. The only gripe I have is the one Gen. Hodges mentioned: that the US is spoon-feeding weapons, out of misplaced concern that Putin will go nuclear. Call his bluff and do what the US military since WWII has trained to do --- go all in and cut off the head of the snake.

So, instead, we need to triple the aid, help these brave people free their land and secure it against future aggression. Yes the flow of weapons does support a lot of Black market opportunities, the flow of weapons to discreet locations seems to inspire profits to a lot of folks lately. I imagine Roman Legions assumed they were invincible as they used their Formations to overcome any futile attempt to oppose them? But Victoria Nuland seems to have exceeded her budget, and the anticipated $200 billion in LNG revenue seems to have become a victim of Nature and European consumers desire to take warm showers? Roman Investors assumed they would endure, even after splitting up their Empire in two parts. The bribes to Bankers took a share, as did the purchase of Politicians. The costs accumulate and sooner or later the expenses of insuring a comfy retirement can bite a Brit in the assets? Empires fall, that is inevitable, and this one seems to draw nearer as the bridges crumble beneath the feet of the Armies as they march to Glory......

No Western political leader has expressly stated this, but the end goal of the NATO powers is not and was never the defence of Ukraine, or propping up Zelensky's government. The real goal is that Western support to Ukraine in this war is slowly bleeding Russia of its military, economic and human resources. NATO's goal in this conflict is to progressively weaken Russia through attrition, without shedding the blood of US or European soldiers. To a large extent it doesn't matter in the great geopolitical picture whether Ukraine can eject the Russian military from its territory, as even if Russia's invasion succeeds in holding Ukrainian territory they will find themselves fighting an endless guerilla conflict. What's really important to the NATO powers is that Russia continues to hemorrhage blood, money and equipment until its political class and its ordinary citizens go out of their minds at the sheer cost - both in human lives and economically - of the conflict that Putin has started. From there on, Putin's days in power are numbered. The difficulty is knowing who is waiting in the wings to replace Putin, but I'm sure there are people far smarter and better connected than I in the West who know the key people who might replace Putin, and their strengths and weaknesses. I'm sure that they are drawing up plans for how to handle Putin's potential successors already. I'm also sure that no matter whether Ukraine wins this conflict or not, Russia will pay such a massive price that it will emerge from the conflict far weaker than it started. I'm sure there are boffins at the CIA HQ in Virginia rubbing their hands at the prospect of the chaos they will be able to wreak on Russia as this conflict grinds to its end. My view is that Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine will go down in history as one of the greatest political and military blunders of all time. Contrary views are welcome, as long as they are reasoned and courteous.
@vicemontey4297
@vicemontey4297 Жыл бұрын
It is absolutely critical that Ukraine not only wins, but pushes deep into Russian territory and capture the political class. This will then enable the overall western allies to come in (without our own troops) and declare new Russian separatist states. The future will then have no Russia just small Russian ethnic states under the control of NATO. The issue here is will China (CCP) just let it happen or will they intervene like they did in Korea and Vietnam. Of course at such point I expect nukes to be used, but its a small price to pay if we can corner China on all sides. India to the south. Russian separatist states to the west and SK, JP, Taiwan and USA to the east. China is the real end goal.

@nicgb098

There need not be a single goal for anything in life. The main goal for the west is to protect its global hegemony. This is maintained by the "rules based order" that is those agreements which make up international law. The current rules based order is one which does not accept the forceful change of borders and recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every nation, large or small. Russia has determined to maintain its hegemony When corruption, bribery, and covert action hasn't been enough to maintain the de facto fealty of nations it considers "in its orbit" it will use the threat of force and force to retain or regain that position of power over its smaller neighbors. Here are the 2 overarching goals that either side of this conflict want to address. In the furtherance of this goal, to prevent Russia from continuing to undermine the "rules based order" which has underpinned western hegemony the West does indeed seek to bleed Russia of its military, economic and human resources. However it would only weaken the Western hegemony to see Ukraine lose any land. Any concession by Ukraine as a result of military action would only undermine the west, and likely only embolden Russia. So actually it is the end goal of the west to defend Ukraine, also not Zelensky's government exactly but the elected government of Ukraine. I also doubt that anyone sees chaos in Russia as a good thing. The West spent the better part of 3 decades trying to convince Russia to play nicely, that is what the West wants. Nobody wants to see the largest nuclear power in chaos. Nobody wants to see a country so rich in resources in chaos when they could be reaping the benefits during peace. Chaos in Russia benefits nobody.

The degradation of Ukraine forces has been grossly under reported, Russian loses are approx. 40,000 troops while Ukraine looses 800 to 1000 troops daily. What are they going to do? Take over Alaska? Lol Ukraine isn’t even an ally. It’s a purely one-sided relationship. They need us and we don’t need them. They’re one of the most corrupt countries on the planet by every index out there. The issue is less about HIMARS systems and more about the rockets they use... NATO as a whole started with a stockpile of about 60,000 (give or take a couple thousand)... the more systems you send to Ukraine, the faster they run through those rockets. NATO is making sure that Ukraine both has the capabilities that the system provides and the endurance to keep using it until the innevitable end of the war. The US for example has ordered something like 5000 to 6000 new rockets in the 2022 budget from what we know, with 50 HIMARS in Ukraine, that would amount to 17 sorties. That wouldn't be enough even for a single offensive.

2:02 Sweden has donated a number of (not clear how many) Robot 17 coast defence units. It's based on the US Hellfire but rather than beeing launched from a helicopter or UAV it's modified to be launched from the shore line, beeing highly portable and very quick to prepare for fire. Sweden is a small country with a small army but we have a military industry in the absolute technology forefront and I'm sure Robot 17 is highly efficient and well suited for its task in Ukraine because it was developed for a very similar scenario where Swedish military is defending our coastline from an attacking Russian navy fleet. I haven't heard this system beeing mentioned in any foreign media reporting on the Ukrain war but maybe Robot 17 is one of the reasons why Ukrain has been so successful in its coastal defense keeping the Russian navy away? If that's the case it would make me proud since I'm from Sweden. 🙂 In addition to Robot 17 we have provided I think 10 000 AT4 anti tank weapons and some other military gear, but I still think we could do more. But elections are coming up in September and unfortunately this takes focus away from Ukraine so there is no real debate about increased Ukraine support right now.. Slava Ukraini!! 🇸🇪❤🇺🇦

One question: why do a lot of these post war discussions seem to assume some sort of normalisation of relations with Russia? Russia needs to leave Ukraine in its entirety and then pay reparations to Ukraine for the damage they have done to the country and the people Russia has killed. Only then can even the slightest thaw be theoretically possible. otherwise its joining the same league as North Korea and Russians can watch the benefits of freedom for Ukrainians on their remaining TVs.

They already took the size of the UK and they have enough people in reserves and money to fight this war for next 20 years. Putin would have never started it if he thought he could lose. A practical constraint on supplying the Ukrainians is just how how quickly they can absorb and effectively utilize the various types of equipment they are asking for. It is not simply a question of dumping 300 M1 Abrams; 72 HIMARS, 400 Bradleys and 48 A10s in the Ukraine and saying to the Ukrainian Army "go git 'em" (the Russians). Troops have to be trained and supply/logistics systems have to established. Perhaps most difficult, the Ukrainian Army needs to develop the operational and logistics skills to conduct large scale, sustained combined arms operations using this new equipment. All this takes time. The average staff college course - the basis for learning how to conduct and sustain large scale combined arms operations - typically takes two years. The real indicator of NATO's commitment is not so much the immediate quantity of equipment being supplied, but whether the supply continues (for example will the US continue to deliver 4 HIMARS every 3-4 weeks) and whether the quality and sophistication of equipment increases - such as shifting from Manpads, which require minimal training, to HARM missiles capable of being launched from MIG25s. Another constraint is that NATO, with the exception of the US, has a very small inventory of the weapons systems that the Ukrainians are requesting. For example, the Bundeswehr had only 120 PzH2000 howitzers, either in storage or on active service, at the beginning of the conflict and no active production line.

D.G. good essay. well , yea F16's are not arriving soon, even thou the US almost certainly has hundreds with a couple years use left, in storage. (the 25 Jets Poland wanted to send ? I'd hope 'in secret' it happened) BUT Ukraine now has about 25 HIMARS missile launchers combining some tracked versions from England, even Germany. I'd think Ukraine can now train its own troops. same for NATO traditional artillery French Caesars , Swedish anti ship launchers. I read France sent a third of it's Caesar artillery ( kinda like truck HIMARS but with NATO guns ) and I'd think some of that came from their active troops. >> my ' pet point' is anti air/ cruise missile D' - almost no current production stuff is available. what is ? 2 nd best but available in numbers. I read England & Turkey have or are replacing their Rapier 2000 with new designs, that's about 200 units... shoulda been there months ago. maybe they are.

Russia can't be defeated by Ukraine on the battle field. That's just impossible. The most you can get from Russia is a compulsory general mobilization which will not change anything for Ukraine; Ukraine will still be defeated. There are only two possible outcomes in this conflict: 1. Ukraine is eventually defeated regardless of how long it takes. 2. The West intervenes directly in Ukraine in an attempt to stop Ukraine's defeat starting WW3.
