Was a mechanic for 10 years, spent 5 of them working for Ford. Absolutely loved doing these jobs when I was left alone to do them. Never got daring enough to pull the cab on an Expedition myself, but I pulled F-150 cabs every chance I had. And this is one of the jobs that actually makes me miss being a mechanic. But, I like my Trains now.

Your vids are gold. I currently have a 2017 f150 3.5L (51k miles, no rattle yet) and I was thinking about getting a new truck.... even considering Chevy or Ram, but you've kind of helped me understand the 3.5L issues, and they're not that scary. I love my 3.5l, and think I'll probably end up getting another one if the price is right.

You have a great channel and provide the critical info I need when working with my dealer on this issue. My 2017 3.5 ecoboost had cam phaser failure at 54K miles (warranty), again at 75K (part customer pay), again at 93K (dealer warranty on prior work), and just started again this week at 109K. I'll need to wait for it to rattle consistently after a cold soak so that the dealer will address the issue, although I've become somewhat of an expert on identifying it by sound. I think this is the second redesign of the phasers for this generation, if I remember correctly.

@@FlyingWrenches13 when you pay 60K for a truck you should not have to pay 3500 each time you need new phasers! I'm definitely very close to abandoning a long family history of Ford trucks and it doesn't seem to me that Ford gives two sh*&%ts about me.... I've called the "customer care" (oxymoron) center several times - they tell me it's the dealers problem, dealer tells me it's Ford's problem. Well, now it's my problem and the solution is probably a Toyota truck....

Is there any harm running the truck with the original factory cam phasers? Truck runs fine, just a little rattle at startup. I plan on keeping it another 25 or 30,000 miles. My 2019 eco boost has been doing this rattle since it was new. I mentioned it to the dealer a couple of times and they just acted as though it was the first time they’d ever heard of it and had no idea what it could be. I started just holding the gas peddle to the floor for a couple seconds when cold starting so the engine cranks a few times before firing up and has a chance to built some oil pressure. It’s now off warranty so I’m just hoping to sell it before something fails.

Love the videos, Mason they have saved my butt! Nissan Tech here doing the fun fun phaser repairs on a 2017 Expedition with 75,000 miles. Customer had it in his head that it was a phaser issue so he bought a RockAuto kit with all 4 phasers, chains, guides, water pump, and everything. Brings it to me and I tear it down and I ran into an issue. The kit he bought on RockAuto was different. His kit he bought had 1 long chain and 2 smaller secondary chains. I go to the Ford parts desk and they pull up what I have is 2 large chains. So yes please please order OEM when you do phaser repairs. According to Ford, up to 6/2017 had the 4 chains does this seem right to you?

I had the cam phaser and timing chain replacement/update on my 2012. Mine rattled at cold start up for a while and finally threw an engine light which the timing went out of spec. It cost me $6000 to fix it and it runs fine. I just recently bought a newer diagnostic computer and tested it on my truck. It shows a 'permanent error' left bank camshaft out of adjustment. Should I be concerned about this?

So I have the vct rattle on my 2018 5.0.. as well as “spark knock” these both happen no matter the engine temp, I drove for 2 hours yesterday and it happened the entire time, from cold to operating temp Other than the noise, does this cause any problems? Like is it okay to leave it as is? Unfortunately the dealers around me don’t like to give out loaner vehicles when people have to leave their vehicles with them, and I can’t be without my only vehicle.

Agreed, but the payload on the Tundras is a joke. I'd love to get one. They hover at around 1300lbs per the sticker. 8000lbs trailer, looking at 1200lbs tongue weight (at the top end of the 15% recommendation). Add a 75lb weight distribution hitch. You need to find someone that weighs 25lbs to drive it. and have no other gear. :( I wish Toyota did better with that.

I have a 2018 and it makes that noise and it got stuck at start up (like when you turn the ignition & hold it) I’v dealt with the local Ford dealer a few times and even forced them to change out the Vacuum solenoid valve & Check valve for the IWE vacuum lines at my cost because of the scraping sound it would make once in a while when I turned left due to the 4wd hubs trying to engage or ??? But whatever it did fix. That sound started again this week so I bought the parts and changed them myself (literally a 5 minute job) and $100 in parts. Now I have to deal with this other issue, I’m an HVAC tech and like fixing things and understand design flaws and I fix them on HVAC systems everyday. I’ve been told that that the screeching sound and the rattle from the engine will not damage anything, I’m an older dude & the first thing I tech new techs is to troubleshoot with their ears and that metal to metal noise is NEVER GOOD lol😂. The way Ford is dealing with these issues is unacceptable and is making me think I’m just better off with a new GMC truck. I’m on my 6th Ford from the same dealer.

I bought a 2017 3.5 EB back in May (6 months ago). Sure enough, I started it up last weekend and got the dreaded rattle. It seems like, since it's a known issue, Ford would step up and cover the full cost as a warranty recall. These trucks aren't cheap and we're expected to pay thousands of dollars to repair a design flaw that they've known was a problem for several years. As much as I love my truck, it may very well be the last F150 I buy. Maybe I should've bought the 5.0 L Coyote like I started to, who knows.

Thanks for another excellent video. My 2017 F150 3.5 ecoboost (Now at 62,000 miles )and i have been dealing with this problem for over 3 years. The Cam phasers have been replaced 4 times . the first two times they used the old part numbers HL3Z, then the third time they used the new ML3Z part. Each time the problem continued not only at cold start but even when the engine was warm. At times the engine sounded like it was going to blow apart. Most recently (Sept) they put in the 4th set of cam phasers using the old part number HL3Z. At first the noise was still there but not as bad and now for the last two weeks the engine is quiet for the first time in 3 years, i am not that confident that the problem has been permanently fixed and suppose that any day now it will start making that awful noise again

For Ford to recommend that you use the old stock first, is a very Ford response.

HI Mason,I hope you see this and can give us some insight since many 4X4 truck owners have this situation. My orginal tire size for my truck is 275/65/18.I leveled it and went with a 305/65/18. Which isnt a giant difference but still a substantially larger sidewall and bigger outter circumference. If I have a flat and need to use my orginal spare tire (factory size) will it destroy the driveline?Whether the front or rear is this an absolute disaster or can I drive a few miles without damage? Keeping in mind its a 4X4.With the understanding of limiting the speed to say around 30-35mph.Any advice with this would be so appreciated. Thank you.

Throw it on the back if you get a flat. Make sure you don’t have a limited slip differential, or a automatic locker. In that case you can’t run it on the rear axle. Most the time you can mount a bigger spare and it will fit under the truck in the original mounting.

So how much does it cost? Or will Ford cover the cost due to faulty design?

Hello. Please tell me, I have a 2011 Ford f150 3.5 ecoboost. The motor died. I have a question. Is the engine from "explorer sport" the same as on "F150" ??? Is the cylinder block suitable? If I buy a short block from explorers sport, will it fit on the f150 3.5 ecoboost 2011?

Yet my cousin's 17 has little over 200k. Been making the noise since around 60k. So if it's out of warranty is it really worth spending the money to replace them. To me that would be no does not seem to actually harm anything.

With all of the problems the 3.5 ecoboost is having, is it possible to come up with a complete list of must do reliable enhancements to put on the engine. It appears most of the issues that ecoboost is having are very costly in terms of maintenance hours. Lifting the cab away seems excessive maintenance for just one issue, but very practical to just do all of them at once. In fact, I would like to see it as a package deal. As of now, I am looking to just replace my engine with a new one that will have as much done to it that will make the engine last easily 400k miles or longer.

Just got my 18 expedition back today from Ford to replace the cam phasers. I told the guy that I wanted the revamped phasers not the old one bc they’re crap. He said they only put the new ones in now and discontinued the old ones. When I picked up the car I looked at the invoice and it showed the old part number. I even questioned it and the guy said it’s the new ones. We don’t believe them. Is there a way to find out? Maybe they are just trying to get it by me. Can I do anything? Any help would be appreciated.
