Best damn truck engine Ford has ever sold. Trucks ain't supposed to be fast, they're supposed to be torquey, smooth, reliable, and bulletproof. 300 six fits the bill PERFECTLY. I remember in the 90's when I was in HS, my neighbor had a 94 F150 work truck with a 300 & a 5 speed. I was young & dumb & would only pay attention to HP ratings. I was like "145 hp? That sux, this must be a gutless wonder" he let me drive it a few times and I was surprised how torquey it was, 260 lbs/ft at a very low 2,000 rpm. Especially with the 5 speed, it accelerated nicely even with a load.

I have a 300 in a 71 f250. The T18 4 speed manual is about the worst transmission I could fathom to mate to this engine. The 2 usable gears take the 300 from explode level redlining to nearly dieing from not enough gas. I’d like to put a good 5 speed on it and do the offy intake kit, comp cam and some finishing touches and see what the 300 can do but that’s nearly 2k right there. I can get a 400 with a c6 in great condition and aftermarket intake and carb for 300 bucks so I am beyond torn at the moment.

Yea I hear ya on that, I'm in the same boat. I would love to see what it do with a bunch of tweaking but I can invest that same amount money into a V8 and get more horsepower. I would love to have a T-18 transmission in my truck. It is a '03 F150 W/ a 4.2 L V6 4X4 long bed. Having that deep low would make up for the absolutely UNBELIEVABLE LACK of LOW END TORQUE this engine has!! It can't even turn into a parking stall w/ out stalling out @ idle. AND the 3.75:1 first gear ratio doesn't help at all. And yes it has 3.55 rear gears. I have a 95 Dakota sport Magnum V6 5spd 2wd that is MUCH BETTER!! was planning to replace the dakota w/the F150 but I am SO DISAPPOINTED w/ f150 that I am keeping the Dakota. it is much more fun to drive. Combined w/ the cheap plastic 3 piece intake manifold ( the mid piece would cost $1600 to replace from Ford, I bought a Dorman alum piece for $600) I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH FORD. My dad loved Fords ( we had a 62 Galaxie) and I had an 86 Mustang but Ford has gone to shit. all in an effort to save money.

@BL Dontmatter I know that the 4.2 is a pushrod engine but so is my Dodge Magnum 3.9. But the smaller Dodge feels like a much more powerful engine even though it is shorter stroke engine. 3.31 vs 3.78 in for the Ford. overall, the Ford produces more total torque 260 ft-lbs for the Ford vs 225 for the Dodge; the Ford feels like all that extra torque just seems like it exists only on paper. The Ford does feel like it doesn't any power below 3000 (i would have to guess because it doesn't have a tach, an XL trim model) but the Dakota does and the torque comes in quite low 800-1200, it does have a tach. The 2 trucks even idle differently, the Ford much smoother but the Dodge has a little bit of a lumpy idle like a Harley. Yes, there is a weight difference between the 2 trucks, The Dakota is a short bed 4x2 midsize truck and the Ford a long bed 4x4, weighing 1500 lbs more. But just driving the 2 trucks you can feel the difference in the engines. I have driven manual transmission vehicles all my life, from a '73 K5 Blazer to a 1.8L chevy Luv truck to a 2.3L I-4 1986 Mustang to the 95 Dodge Dakota 3.9 v6 5spd to the 4.2L F-150 v6 5 spd. I originally bought the F150 to replace the Dakota but now, I so much prefer the Dakota that I am going to keep it (I custom ordered the Dakota after a thorough reading of the brochure: 3.9V6, 5 spd bucket seats, 3.55 anti-spin differential, cruise control & AC) but the F150 I purchased used from the CarGurus website

@user-xg8yy7yl1d Жыл бұрын
Yeah they just gave the 300 inline the same transmissions that the V8s got with little consideration for the much different torque and HP curve of the 300. The automatics are the worst because they shift at the right time for the v8 which happens to be about the worst time to shift the i6.

My suspicion would have been that having one of *these* would have been preferable, especially if I could have gotten a mid-sixties van with an “engine room” between and behind the two front seats. Those are made for *long* motors, and one of this kind would have made for a long *Nantucket Sleighride* - or whatever one calls a lengthy excursion involving many ghostly nighttime drives up winding hilly roads while attempting to see the corners of one’s state.
