man oh man!! im so glad i found this video!! my 02 terminals are playing a disappearing act on me. the copper is corroding away. this video is just what i needed. not many videos, surprisingly, on just replacing the terminals on the 7.3....thank you so much brother!!!...sub'd

What I did, buy some welding cable wire, cut 3 pieces of solder inside the connector, clamped the eyelet cut back about the length of the eyelet make sure those wires are completely in without those "whiskers" (test fit) slide the shrink on, heat the copper connector then push in the wire hold for a few. Clean look.

Thanks for the info. I’m semi new to diesels and my battery cables were in rough shape when I bought this 99.5 7.3 a few years ago. Mainly, cables wouldn’t tighten anymore having loose connections. Replaced driver side negative cable with OEM. Cant find OEM passenger side negative cable. DID NOT know passenger side drew more power, but makes sense seeing as the starter is on that side. Just figured it shared the load between the two batteries.

I think it does share the load to a degree, the starter cable is the huge one since the amperage draw is massive, especially on cold mornings when everything is tight and oil is thick.

Nice video! I like the way those clamps look and work. Wonder if the copper connector would have got hot faster for the solder if not in that metal vise heat sink? (I don’t know, just asking out loud) maybe hold cable in vise instead? Let us know long term how they hold up! Looks like it turned out great! I think this has many applications.

Thanks pal! Bought my first 7.3 recently and this fix is def on the list. Overall my truck is solid, new HPOP, injectors, all the critical sensors, new batteries, but the PO did not do this.

I know its a old video but i was told by a Tractor guy take a hose clamp and put round the battery cable to compress the wires makes for a ezer install of new connections

@@billmalec unfortunately, when you're a small time KZfaqr, there aren't a lot of options open to you without spending big money on safe music. I used what was available. It's unfortunate that my FREE video that I spent hours to make wasn't good enough.

Not pickin bud but you don't need to sweat those like pipe joints. I've been a diesel tech for 32 years and in the industry we fill the bowl on the cable lug with solder and shove the cable in the bowl. Count to 15 and its set. If you don't use the anvil you get way more solder and 00 gage cable will brake before the end comes of pluss the resistance is way Lowe and there's about 10 less steps. You strip the cable Heat the solder in the lug. Plunge the cable end in the lug. Slide the heat shrink on while it's hot and it's done. Once you do strength tests and continuity test with ot without the anvil you'll never use the anvil again. It's counter intuitive but that anvil makes a weaker less conductive connection

I would soak the bare cable ends in a baking soda and water bath to neutralize any battery acid that may be lurking between the strands. When the bubbling stops all of the acid is neutralized.

A small note the antifreeze is a bit low. Main question is the drivers side battery cover is missing like on mine and many others. That cover is supposed to direct fresh air through the filter. But with it not there is there a problem not having that cover on the driver's side battery?

For the positive battery to starter you said it may be a 3/0 but how well does the 2/0 cable lug fit

I used 3/0 on that cable and fit nicely just had to twist it tightly to get in lug

so a total of 4 eyelets crimped/soldered?! do the ground wires use the 2/0 size and hot wires use 1/0 size??

Check the video desc, I put all the stuff in there, basically the pass side ground and the starter wire are 2/0, both driver's side terminals are 1/0, the pass side wire going to the driver's side is 1/0, then there are a couple more on ass side that are 1/0

Hey man, when you were getting ready to do this project, did you look into building your own new battery cables? Copper costs have just gone through the roof so it's not a great time right now if not urgent but I was thinking oversized welding cable to build my own, ordered cut to length from local electrical supply house.

Yeah, I actually did. We have a close personal family friend who owns a starter/alternator rebuild shop who could supply the necessary cables. But, as I looked over everything, the only real issue was the butchered terminals - everything else was in great shape, so I chose to just do the terminals. Welding cable - I've used it to build jumper cables and battery cables in the past. Worked just fine for me.

I'm not really sure about the wire gauge sizes. The battery terminals, yes. As far as sizes, I'll bet 90% of the lugs would be the same.

Since it's just re-doing the existing cables, there's really nothing to make. It's pretty easy and it makes a a big difference.

The primary wire from the battery to the starter on mine was huge too. Not 1", but huge nonetheless.

So sir, if I can make some suggestions. I apologize I don't know your first name. Spend the extra time when making a video to move the camera to the opposite side of you, to show the viewer what you are doing. You obviously have good intentions, but we don't know what's going on if we are looking at the back of your gloves. For the stuff that is self-explanatory but that you would still like to show in the video, speed up those sections like a movie montage, 2 or 3x speed. FWIW, I want to do this on my own 7.3 but I would like to fabricate my own heavy battery cables if I was going to spend this amount of time on it.

We've used these terminals countless times on farm equipment (tractors, combines, sprayers, etc) for well over 2 decades without a single problem. I made my decision based on a whole lot of personal experience, experience that has never let me down.

You don't know how to disconnect the batteries!! You never remove one battery completely then disconnect the other one!! You ALWAYS disconnect BOTH ground cables first!!!

Well, let me try and explain. Sometimes people just video what they are doing on a given day. For about 99.9% of people that's just fine. Every once in a while though, a comment like this comes along. I'll tell you one thing about this "task" - It'll still be working just fine long after I'm gone. Can you point me to the video you made showing the "correct" way of doing it?

Excellent suggestion Greg! Why didn't I think of that?.....oh wait, I did. $400 worth of cable and a full day of work vs: replacing some cable ends in a couple of hours. Yeah, I think I'll stick with this method. Regarding the music. I can definately change it for you if you would be so kind as to record me some royalty free music and fill out all the paperwork certifying that that I'm free to use in my videos without royalties.
