No, if you're wanting more lockup, you don't increase the number of spacers for more preload. You remove the spacers and add an extra set of drive/driven discs per side (as I recall, with no spacers installed there's room for an extra set per side, but there might be room for more). That's better because it gives more clutch surface area, which gives more friction and therefore, more torque transfer. I had to replace the Ford 8.8 in my brother's 92 Bronco because the vent hose had broken, he got stuck in mud, and water/mud got in and he continued to drive it, not knowing the damage that was happening. He had an open 3.55 ratio, so when I bought a used replacement, I found a good deal on a 3.55 rear with the factory Traction-Loc limited slip. I bought a new set of discs from the dealer. In addition to installing them the logical way (drive-driven-drive-driven, etc, for more torque transfer) rather than the stock way which puts a couple of drive and/or a couple of driven discs together per side (or something like that), I removed the spacers and used the best looking discs that came with the stock differential in their place. Although it was no automatic locker, it actually performed quite well and was a very cost effective installation.

I would have to agree with Thomas Kimble and I would like to see a more detailed video on the shimming and what certain size shim goes where and when! Thanks 🙏 for the great video on this type of information and it will help me tremendously because I never rebuilt a ford rear end before. lol

Awesomeness....I am switching my 96 Bronco 8.8 broken spiders to an eaton ls locker. I went through this headache in Tech School....now I have to set this up myself and didn't want to deal with those clutches or shims....but with a 411 and 35x12.50x15s and a small towing cam in the future I pray ...Thanks Man...☝🙏❤

For us first timers, I would have liked to seen how you hooked up the dial indicator for measuring backlash. I also as a first timer would like to hear you talk about different LSD and how easy or hard for their install. Backlash scares me lol, is there a LSD that is the simplest to install

Agreed. Using a dial indicator is pretty straight fwd. A quick look on amzon could ser you up with a dial and magnetic mount and arm for purdy inexpensively. Just make sure the diff is fully rotated one way or the other (jus for any noobs out there, the lash is how far you can turn the gear fwd or rev WITHOUT turning the pinion,). Stick th mag base to the housing where the cover goes(nice n flat). Using the little rods or arms situate the dial indicator parallel to the teeth of the ring gear. You want to make sure when you position dial you compress the dial a bit, maybe half or a full sweep of the needle and tighten it down. Dont worry about getting it on zero because once you get it tight you can lossen the small screw that holds the dial face and rotate the face till the zero lines up with the needle. Now when you roll the ring gear fwd(or rev depending which way you chose to start) the needle will move however far the pinion will rock back and forth. Blamo! Valve lash! 🥳🥳 😂😂 lol sorry GEAR lash. I jus finished putting another motor together too. Hope this helps. BRAAAP!

Is it absolutely necessary to place the S spring. I heard in forums it only benefits when its extremely slippery like mud or rain. Is this true, what would happen if I leave it out. Thnks

Woulda been nice to see how ya got the “sissy” spring (??? lol) in. Thats the biggest PIA. Also the “sissy” spring is not there to keep the clutch pack from chattering. Its there to provide the necessary tension on the fibers and steels. Just like the springs around the basket on a ATV clutch.

haha, well i did show part of the struggle....but yeah just some pliers and a will to succeed! lots of guys dont even run the sissy spring, the axle ends being pressed against the center pin holds it all in place. but i prefer to have the spring in there. thanks for the comment!

Could a f150 rearend be swapped to a 2004 Mustang Gt? Or if there is any ford vehicle that would have the same 8.8 rearend if anyone could point me in the right direction there I would appreciate any input on this subject.

the F150 8.8 is wider and leaf sprung. maybe an Exploder 8.8....?? most likely, you'll need all the CA mounts and swaybar mounts moved over to the new axle.

My 8.8 has been breaking the ears off of the clutches, wich gives slack on the axle gears and the ear is floating around getting chewed up and causing dammage. Ive been wondering about making my own clutches from some thicker steel. What do yall think?

Just to help people understand some things that you left out... one the bearing caps for the carrier have arrows on them to show you which site is up and down you only need to mark them left to right. Secondly, the bearing caps get to work to 77 foot pounds using a breaker bar on them is asking for trouble. Additionally you used an impact wrench to put your ring gear on which is not how you're supposed to do it. It should be torqued to spec

The 9" takes more hp to turn it because of pinion location. Aftermarket high end 9" center sections use an altered pinion location to save hp.

@@vintagespeed i can see you are very sensitive about a little bit of criticism. Am I sapposed to like triton engines? I think they are the worst move ford could have made in 97. I like ford trucks like yours very much & I hate to see guys put the modern electronic controlled engines in them. I think if you want modern computer controlled luxury s why not get a new truck? In the end, its your truck! You can do what you want with it! You should have it how you like it! So with that, im glad you like your truck. But still, to bad it's a fickin triton! Might as well be a 350 chevy.
