Eaton has a plant west of Spencer, Iowa that manufactures a number of parts used in differentials and many drive line parts. So, yeh! Some USA parts. Castings, not so much, like Dana. Chrysler used the same carrier preload screw with a locking bracket bolted so it can’t move. GM had a procedure to test the “Auburn” disc type also called “Corporate” for a long time. With the trans in gear or park, an adaptor was used on the lug bolts and 1/2” beam type torque wrench. Only one clutch pack would break friction and allow turning. 36-42 lbs. ft. on 1/2 ton pickups and 62-78 on passenger cars. Since more weight is over the rear axle on cars, pickups require less. This is the Min-Max specs and if low, required a new plate kit. Since the pinch point of holding required a “S” shaped spring in the middle, the kit included cross-shaft, spring and friction & steel plates. Placing the heavy car version in a truck would results in hopping, noise and wear when turning. Just info on older GM locking diff’s. Bearings are cheap, use new ones, adjust for new specs, different from used. Don’t forget the crush sleeve. Tip; use a heavy companion flange tool we’re U-joint bolt. A chain wrench can be used, but place a tube cheater over the lower control arm or leaf spring, 300 lbs. ft. sneak up quick. Be prepared to check for in-out movement. 12 in. lbs. on beam type is used to check rotational force again, new or used bearings. Check pattern with pry bar loading the top smooth area of the carrier wedged in the housing, turn both ways to check drive & coast sides of tooth pattern. Once again, great video, great information and completed properly. Just change the lube every 30k miles or sooner. GL5 or add limited slip additive, then make some figure “8’s” in the parking lot to break in. Wish we had shop in school. But, it takes equipment & a good teacher. Just like him. Great job!

Could you educate me? I know my spline and axel ratio but what else do I need to know to find a limited slip differential that will fit? My car doesn't have a large after market base so I may have to use one meant for a different car.

Question: What Eaton part number did your old truck need and which Timkens did you need to use? Long version: Great video. I've got a TruTrac model #913A477 ready for my Ford Transit van with a 9.75" and am trying to track down the right Timken bearings and races. I've measured the diameter of where the bearings get pressed onto the Eaton as a 2.298" and 2.289" and finding only the Timken SET14 to match that spec -- but it's listed as a manual transmission countershaft bearing for $12US. I'm suspicous about fitment here.
