@@ItsAlwaysRusty Exactly what I was gonna comment. I do commercial orders for shops at a parts store, and 9 times out of 10 the mechanic ordering says "Customer wants the cheapest part you've got" It's a shame when they come in later to try and warranty the part and it's a 90 day warranty battery, or a 1 year warranty suspension part. Especially when for 5-20 bucks more they could've had a part with a lifetime warranty.

My friend had this happen (woke up with a dead as a door nail battery on a Ford Explorer) and I warned him to do the diagnosis before he swapped a battery. Of course his Dad rolls in to help him “fix the car” all mechanic like and replaces the battery with a brand new one from Autozone. Same thing happens the next day, cooks battery #2 dead as a door nail, at which point I think they finally relented and a shop told them it was the wiper motor.

Eric, funny that you have a similar problem that i dealt with last week. Had a Trashscape, about the same vintage, battery dies overnight, but not totally dead. Did the parasitic draw test with my test light, pulled every fuse and relay in the underhood fusebox, no dice. Went to the fusebox in the right side of the center console, found that by pulling fuse 19, the draw went away. That fuse is the power feed to the rear wiper motor, and the rear wiper in this one was not working, either. pulled the connector at the rear wiper motor, the draw was still there. This one happened to have the entire liftgate interior trim panel removed, so that made it easy to start going down the line. Disconnected the main connector for the liftgate, draw was still there. At that point, i looked up the wiring diagram, and figured out that the circuit feeding the rear wiper is shorted to ground somewhere between the interior fusebox and the liftgate. Talked to the customer, she didn't have time for me to crawl thru the wiring harness, so i just pulled that fuse and tossed it in the glovebox. Heard from the service writer the next day that she was happy that she no longer has to get it jump started every morning. Btw, new battery, too! Did a little research, turns out that the rear wiper motor going bad is a common problem on these.

YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!! My wifes car had me cometely puzzled and i went thru some KZfaq and your comment being one that i watched i thought lets check this rear wiper motor and soon as i touched it i knew where the draw was coming from. In the medical world there is an acronym "DNR" (Do Not Resuscitate) used for patients who do not want any extraordinary measures taken to save them if something goes really bad. In this case, you had a "DNR" (Do Not Repair) call from the passenger after you quickly and easily diagnosed the problem . Once again, it is amazing how you take about a minute to understand the nature of the problem and then make a logical plan to track down its actual source. Whereas, keeping with the medical theme, "the other guy" (we won't call him a mechanic) " kinda', sorta' understands the problem (it's electrical!), but decided to fix it by putting on a bandage when performing a transplant is the correct solution! Once again, well done Dr. Eric!

Side mirrors are fine by themselves. I do agree the rear view mirror gives more information, but driving anything for cargo, and you get used to not having that information anyway. Now, if I don't have a side mirror, I won't drive. There is way too much information missing. I once broke a side mirror in the city, and it was the worst day driving.

I use a local shop, family owed business in the small town I live in. I don't always get a warm and fuzzy but they know that nine out of ten times I know what the codes mean and what needs to be done to confirm the issue. thanks to you and Ivan. My issue was with a "dealer installed" keyless entry system that I thought I had "fixed" by removing the module. When I found out the power door locks were the source of the draw it wasn't hard to find the culprit; a neat ball of relays and speaker wire wrapped in electrical tape behind the passenger kick panel with the bonus "No Solder No Crimp all Splice and Tape" wiring system. Some solder, heat shrink and cursing fixed it right, at least until I find the next easter egg.

Nothing like DIY wiring. Even wiring that's supposed to be to a national code can still be missed if the government inspector knows crap all about this electrical system.

I heard a guy went into that same shop . He said " I have no brakes " . They told him " no problem , pick it up later " . He came back and they cut a large hole in the driver's side floor . He asked " WTF did you do to my car " ! They said - " did you ever watch The Flintstones " ? Perhaps their talents would best be directed to IKEA - " Assemblers Wanted , No Experience Necessary " ! Nice quick find . There are other videos on the wiper motor trying to park on Ford's and killing batteries .

That's a little dramatic. Most small electric motors like this have thermistors in them. Plus the whole reason it only ran for a few seconds and shut off is because the circuit has protections on it to prevent overheating the motor.

@@pv2xeek This is what I was looking for as far as technical information, good design from the engineers to protect from overheating the motor with a shorted circuit. Had a rear wiper situation years ago on an aerostar van. Taillights shorted to ground. Turns out a kid had stepped on it, breaking the mount and the motor came down on the license plate lights and cut the wires shorting them to the motor itself! Usually looked for trailer plugs as the culprit but seen the blade down on the actual door made me suspicious. Good work my man!

My daughter's '12 Escape had the same issue back in the summer & it was pulling up to 5 amps. It's pretty sad that a shop couldn't properly diagnose that ladies car & just pulled a Scotty K hack job. I diagnosed my daughter's problem in under 15 minutes & I'm just a DIY hack. I fixed it by pulling the fuse because I need to replace the hatch and bumper cover due to my daughter being rear ended. Luckily there was no damage to the frame or quarter panels. Been having a hard time finding a hatch at the junkyards that isn't rusted out or dented in.
