Are your brakes humming? Thumping? Maybe a "wom-wom-wom" with the steering wheel or brake pedal vibrating a bit? Chances are that you're due for some new pads and rotors.
A quick step by step (Ford Escapes '13-'16) for simply either changing your pads, your rotors, or both! Aside from rotor size, this process should apply to both front or rear wheels if you're looking to do the job!
NOTE: Annotations have been made to include:
- Use your wired brush to LIGHTLY clean any rust from the hub and sliding surfaces of the T45 torx bolts before adding ANY grease for the new rotor
- When adding ANY grease, be very light and sparing. A little bit goes a long way and you don't want to have any get on your pads at all or else they're shot.
- When compressing the caliper piston, it's best to open your bleeder valve on the hydraulics line. Do a full brake system bleed after replacing your rotors.
Using the following tools:
- Wire Brush
- Dead Blow Rubber Mallet/hammer
- Caliper Compression Tool
- Brake and Rotor Grease
- PB Blaster
- 7/8'' Open Wrench
- Flat Head Screw Driver
- 19mm Socket
- 13mm Socket
- T45 Torx Driver
- Socket Wrench and Extension
ANOTHER NOTE - TORQUE AMOUNTS - Credit due to @Centex on FordEscape.org-
FYI per my Motorcraft '13-'14 Escape workshop manual CD:
Front and rear caliper slider bolt torque = 28Nm (27 lb-ft)
Front caliper anchor plate (bracket) torque = 175Nm (129 lb-ft) !!
Rear caliper anchor plate (bracket) torque = 63Nm (46 lb-ft)
Featured in this installation is a Centric Brake Rotor Kit with Pads from Rock Auto. Part Number is 90961537.
