Many techs could be as knowledgeable as Brian, but most techs don't care about learning. They just want to get their paycheck. To be a good technician you have to partly be an enthusiast and like your job, and most people don't. Brian is such a good technician that I, by watching his videos, has made me confident to tackle a timing chain job if I had to (never done one before).

The last thing dealers want is techs spending more time just to do a better job. Doing a worse job generally is more profitable especially when they convince you to just buy a new vehicle. Best bet is never step one foot on dealer property even if you are being chased by a pack of rabid dogs.

You were 100% correct. I bought a 2005 f150 with bald rears and recaps up front. I heard that same noise when I tested the 4wd. I now have new tires all around and it shifts into 4wd as smooth as a babies bottom. I never would have guessed it was the tires.

Same issue. I bought a used 2010 F150 Lariat with 2 snow tires in the rear. The 4x4 differential blow out during a winter storm. I had it replaced and the violent engagement occurred. I went to 3 shops and all stated it couldn’t be the tires. I found this video and took the new tires off of another work truck to try it. The engagement in to and out of 4x4 was as smooth as silk. Thanks for the video.

I had a moment like this once. I was driving my 2006, there was stopped traffic ahead due to a freight train. The kind of train that takes 45 minutes of moving slowly, and backing up numerous times. I shifted into neutral, and cut the engine while I was rolling at around 35mph. The horrible noises that came from the front axle scared the crap out of me! The wheel actuators use engine vacuum to keep them disconnected from the drive hubs. I didn't know that at the time. I now have that knowledge. Haven't done that again, and the truck was fine, but that experience was one I don't recommend.

As a former senior Master Tech for Ford Motor Company there was a service bulletin years ago. When you have 4 wheel drive concerns you should always measure the circumference of each tire they should be within 1/4 of an inch. I fixed many an issue with just that. You got some good stuff posted. Keep up the great work 👍

97 expedition 4x4 - What's the cause of gas fumes in the plastic radiator tank? Is it a head gasket leak? also has alot of pressure released when you unscrew the cap. The cap that was on it when I bought it was allowing fluid to run out the cap with it warmed up and with the heater on full blast. I replaced it with a cap from a 03 Taurus (no more fluid running out). Also, steering wheel has an old staircase creak in it when you turn it; is it the clock spring? Steering has a little play too.

I bought an '86 F250 years ago that did this same thing, other than it did it anytime it was in four wheel drive...every so often it would BANG! and feel like it was blowing apart. I had a guy dig into it thinking it was the transfer case...he pulled the case out and tore into it and everything looked great, especially considering it had 95,000 miles on it. So he turned to looking at the gears in both diffs with the same results...he even threw on a new set of Warn hubs, but it still did it. While I was standing there talking to him about it, I noticed the truck had a bigger than normal rake for those year F250 4x4s. I looked a little closer and realized the front tires were a smaller size than the rear...I had planned to get new tires anyway, so I didn't pay a lot of attention to the tires, other than them being a couple of different brands. I mentioned the tire size difference to the guy and he sat there and looked at it for a minute and I saw the light bulb go off in his head at the same time it hit me. So I took it down and got new tires...problem disappeared. It would cause pressure to build up in the drive train to the point it had to go somewhere...he figured the hubs would be the most logical point for the energy to release before something snaps.

Great demonstration on the tire size issue Brian.👍 It's also just important on AWD vehicles. I posted a video on this issue because I have seen cars that have expensive powertrain damage and the factory warranty claim is denied by the dealership. This is due to mismatched tire size circumference. The owners get mad because they don't understand why. Take care -Glen

Same thing on my Ranger. When I first got the truck, the tires were all the same size, but a different brand on the front. There was an inch and a half difference in profile between the backs and the fronts according to mechanic at the dealership. When I engaged the system, it would be like it was binding. When I put all the same tires on, that stopped the binding and it works normally.

Brian, I had a customer that replaced all four tires. Same brand and size on a AWD Mountaineer . It developed a severe driveline noise at highway speed on decell. My 04 would do that with brand new equal tires for the whole time i owned the truck. I just had to replace the 4wd vacuum lines, because i cracked one doing the timing kit. Found i had a completely bad check valve on the vacuum line to the 4wd solenoid. Every since i replaced both of those, it's been fine. It wasn't quite as rough as that one, but it would scare my friends in the truck. I would engage the 4wd sitting still or lay off the throttle for 5 sec or so to ease it up.

Also if you have an ABS code fix that first , they use a speed sensor input to engage the t/case smoothly, had the old black tape trick on the ABS light , I didn't do a complete all moduals scan before jumping in. Parts cannon was lock and loaded but I didn't pull the trigger.

My police department had a 2010 Explorer. We got a flat at about 3k miles. Our shop replaced the tire... and every warning light illuminated. The shop then replaced both front tires. Same result. Then changed all four tires, and that solved the issue. Only 3k miles and the tire wear was significant enough to threw the AWD system into fault.
