Tom, Thank you for doing what you do. You have educated me with all of your content and often tell people to check out your videos. I can’t wait for your videos on charging at home. I picked up my Lightning on June 3rd and installed the CSP July 3rd. Getting some weird errors and opened ticket with Ford but they seem to be struggling. @@anthonyR9768 This appears to be a rampant issue if you use the max 80A. Don't have to be in a hot climate or hot ambient environment. Seems like a design issue - maybe Tom will run into it if he can install on a 100A circuit. As a workaround, people are having success by turning down the max charge amps with the rotary switch or the app. Will be interesting to see if Ford / Sunrun can come up with an actual fix. Otherwise this isn't an 80A EVSE as it is presently behaving with the necessary de-rating.

I was one of the lucky few that got a call from my dealership with an offer to place an order during Ford’s ‘cleanup’ order window. I’m really interested in the home charging part. I’m not going to be able to dedicate 100 amps to the charger but 50 may be possible. The pro charger can be de-rated with an internal switch I believe. Thanks for the great content.

you and i are in the same boat. order number but no build date yet (i have a platinum trim spec'd). and the massaging seats have been deleted on the order, as of now, so that stinks. i hope Ford can come through and that is why they are holding off with firming up a build date. part of me now wishes i had spec'd a lariat !

@BB-lx7os 2 жыл бұрын
@@evquietcornerct3210 Mine is the lariat w/ extended battery (much like Tom's). How can they delete the massaging seats on you? Thought that was one of the real benefits of the platinum. When my local Ford called me they said, "It's the lariat or nothing at this point. We aren't getting any choice in models at this point." The dealer has rec'd only two so far. One was the vehicle they have to keep for show for 6 months. One to their first in line customer. Supposedly I'm number 15 ... I'm hoping for this fall. I did get to test drive it and my short drive only made me want it more!
@evquietcornerct3210
@evquietcornerct3210 2 жыл бұрын
@@BB-lx7os the seats are a delete item now, per the lightning forum boards. Ford went in and changed the orders themselves. when i look at my order i can see that they are deleted. on ICE truck trims that include them you can't order the truck without acknowledging that you won't get them. rumor has it Ford is prioritizing components for lightning builds, but removing the option on the build sheets "to schedule production faster". the credit you get ? $300. yeah, $300. totally stinks. now, i am hoping that the delays are to await parts, and the trucks will have the seats when built. there are conflicting views on this. only time will tell. it is also controversial as there are ICE truck orders that could have been put in before lightning orders, and they are not getting the seats and being passed over for lightning production, if true. there may very well be a bunch of platinums out there in the 2022 MY that don't have them. my dealer has only received their mannequin, and no customer deliveries yet. i think i am #2 on their list, not 100% certain, but there is no expected build date for me that i can see.

Great video as always - you definitely look happy to be in this vehicle. Very interested to see how this does in the winter given no heat pump. That's really the only shortcoming of the truck. Would like to see a comparison between pros/cons of using that, versus the ProPower OnBoard for as-needed home backup.

With it's fairly low efficiency, I wouldn't expect heat pump vs. heater to be nearly as noticable as in higher efficiency cars.
@billjohnson3344
@billjohnson3344 2 жыл бұрын
@@brad_wilson I agree that the % of power to propel the vehicle will be greater than heating - especially for this not so efficient vehicle (just by nature of a truck). But every mile counts, and in cold temperature, you'll want to conserve any battery power wherever possible to reduce range loss since it's capacity will already be diminished due to the cold, the aero at cold, etc.

I'm getting the Hummer EV dual motor next year as my first EV. I hired an electrician to punch through the garage wall of our home to run the wire and conduit, but I hard wired my own charger (48 amp Emporia). Also just installed a NEMA 1450 on the side of my cabin... but the panel up there is easy to get to so I will also install a hard wired charger up there myself in the garage, as well. Glad you are enjoying your Lightning. Not a Ford guy myself but it seems to be a pretty decent EV truck.

@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 2 жыл бұрын
You can expect range to be cut in half or more depending on the weight you're towing. An extended range battery will charge from 15% to 80% in around 41 minutes. Everyone that has done any research on the lightning should know this vehicle is not designed for long distance towing. Nor is it designed for long distance travelers who are in a hurry to get anywhere. This is a vehicle designed, for great towing and payload capabilities, if used in your local area and you plan on charging at home.
@ranig2848
@ranig2848 2 жыл бұрын
@@pstoneking3418 I'm well aware as I've towed small and large trailers with the Model X but am still curious how the F-150 does due to it's size, weight and battery. BTW, from my own experience and looking at towing reviews (for EV and gas trucks), towing at high speeds is much more effected by the size of the trailer (it's front and volume) than the weight. Travel trailers and hauling trailers have huge fronts that act like big parachutes (or sails) that cause crazy drag and thus increase energy use dramatically and reduce range significantly (on electric and gas). Still looking forward to seeing anyone doing a travel trailer with the F-150 on a 400-500 mile trip - including the charge time.

That's nice range. I'll be curious what the winter range is. It would be great if they could make them more efficient as 2.1 in the summer is bad for most EVs, but it makes sense for a pickup truck.

Enjoy your vids Tom. A bit curious about your mixing SI units with old English imperial units … miles per kWh? A bit confusing as the US mile is also less than the English mile. Which old mile are you using? Just a dig carry on.

I found with my 2023 Lariat extended range Lightning it needs to do about 2.2 efficiency to match the EPA range. That is about 65 miles per hour on the highway.

Thanks for posting this video, it was very informative. Any thoughts on what the range would be if you had gone 80mph instead of 70 (keeping everything else constant)? Also, if this test was done with the Standard Range battery, would the same ratio apply? For example 320 ER battery gets 270 on highway, would the 230 SR battery get 190ish on the highway?

@@profkeenan I guess I'm just curious what the reduction in range would be at higher speeds. Out where I live, the speed limit is 75 on the highway and I'm trying to get a feel for range at that level. I know you didn't drive that fast, but any thoughts on what it might be?
@profkeenan
@profkeenan 2 жыл бұрын
@@brianbecker935 I would guess at least 10% if it is like my tesla.. If I have 200 miles at 70mph I get 180 at 80mph. And that's in an aerodynamic model s. wind is a small thing. however cold is the killer. As a NJ person, the cold is the major factor. However, I have a 3 with a heat pump and that helps. I am 99.999 sure the lightning doesnt have a heat pump.

@@profkeenan thank you for the information. I was just looking for a ballpark figure and this helps. When I start doing the math on the Standard Battery Lightning, the range starts to get less and less. 230 combined, but that turns in to 205 max range from a full charge on the highway. Going at 80 mph (which is normal in AZ), the range probably dips to 190 (from a full charge). When it comes time to recharge, I'll probably only recharge up to 75% because of time, which then puts the range at 150 or so. Add in cold weather, or hot weather (in AZ) and its gets less. Can I still do my road trips off 130/140 range? While I don't want to buy a truck for the things I do 2% of the time, I still want my truck to do everything I want. So, it's a tough question for me right now.

I'd be curious how much range drops off at 75 MPH. Most of the interstates here in Florida are 70 MPH and I set my ICE F150 to 75 and with a 36 gallon take I've gotten over 700 miles out of it many times and average around 630-650 combined. Any chance you'd run a test at 75?

The difference in wind resistance between 55 mph and 70 mph is quite large on any vehicle much less a pickup truck that wasn't designed to be particularly aerodynamic. Keeping between 55 and 60 mph will drastically improve range.

Hey Jersey neighbor consider reporting battery temperature using the obdii reader when doing range test. That gives us an idea just how effective the cooling system is .I'm sure on a cool day it's whatever the temperature is outside. I have seen however that on my pachy van the battery temp sometimes exceeds outside temp.

Hi. I've thought about that a lot but have decided not to use an OBD reader on my tests. There are plenty of other KZfaqrs that do, so it's out there if people want that info. The main reason I won't use one is the vast majority of my followers are new to EVs and I am concerned about the perception that EVs are so complicated and difficult to understand that you need to buy and hook up monitoring equipment just to own one. If I can't explain what's going on in relatively simple terms so everybody can understand then I'm not doing my job. :)
