Finally I can offer you some words of advice (time saving tips) from a Ford Master Diesel Tech who works on these vehicles day in and day out. Tip #1 first thing to remove is the right side lower tie rod end and upper drag link end, that way when your moving the knuckle back and forth to get the wheel bearing retaining nuts you don't have to fight against the steering linkages. Tip #2 When removing the lower tie rod end, the best method is the classic bash the knuckle eyelet with a beefy hammer and the lower tie rod end will just fall downwards (place the nut back on a thread or two so it doesn't go flying). Tip #3 when removing the wheel bearing / hub assembly (yours came out rather smooth but i'm sure you'll come across some that are just frozen in the knuckle) instead of bashing the outer flange with a hammer (especially if your going to be re-using the bearing) use a pencil tip air hammer bit on the back side of the wheel bearing through knuckle studs (where you took the nuts off from). The studs are concave on the end and a pencil tip air hammer bit fits into them perfectly. Then just blast all 4 stud corners and walk the hub/bearing assembly out without causing any damage to the wheel bearing or knuckle or dust shield (this will also be easier to accomplish turning the knuckle back and forth with the steering linkages out of the way). Finally tip #5 the knuckle assembly tapers and wedges the upper ball joint stud in the upper caster/camber adjusting sleeve (the lower ball joint rarely gets stuck). Thread the lower ball joint nut on a thread or two (to catch the knuckle when it lets go) then remove the upper nut and go to town on the threads of the upper ball joint with a beefy hammer. Smash that upper ball joint (your replacing it anyways) on the top of the threads downwards forcing it down and out of the axle eyelets. A few good whacks and the knuckle will pop downward and rest on the nut you installed on the lower ball joint. Hope this helps Eric-O, lord knows I have been helped by watching your videos for the past few years. Glad I could finally offer some tips back at ya. I am always impressed by the mechanics in the Rust Belt. Anyone who has done this understands how laborious and frustrating it can be. Everything has to be replaced, zero question about it…and PLEASE use anti-sieze to help the next guy out!

Looks like Brooks also makes cannons. You should buy one and shoot new but faulty Dorman sensors out of it. Then it truly would be a "parts cannon".

Tec tip from a 50 year ford tec. All you have to do release the tie rod ends from the nuckle is to tap on the center boss between the two ends with a small dead blow hammer. The bottom joint will just drop off then reinstall the castell nut and gently tap up DONE Good video's

Legend, dealing solely with European vehicles your videos are a true learning source for me, there haven't been grease fittings on our stuff for 50 years and the closest I will get to this will be the occasional Japanese pickup. I know what my wife is getting me for our anniversary now though, I must have those brass hammers (or mallets as we Brits would call the big ones)

FYI! This happened to me back in 09 working on a DPW truck. My head was next to it but thank God the nut was still on the ball joint on the knuckle. My face got burnt with hot grease, rubber and steel shrapnel but I was ok. like a shot gun going off next to my head. The following is from another person it happened to. " F250 SD 4X4 CC My son and his friend were changing the driver's side ball joints on my truck today. The castle nut on the upper joint was hard to remove, and the ball joint's shaft began to spin with the nut. ViceGrips, etc did not work, so he used the torch to cut through the shaft, just below the threaded area. It cut though easy enough. The rubber boot (he assumes) was burning and he extinguished it. He removed the knuckle from the truck and laid it down next to him. Approximately two minutes later .... super loud boom. The remaining part of the ball joint's shaft exploded out of the joint's body, punched through the wood overhead door about 20 feet away, and lodged deeply into the garage's block wall. My son's friend saw the knuckle jump about a foot off of the ground as it happened. Both boys ears' were ringing from the blast (even though they were outside in the driveway). The knuckle was sitting on the ground between them, as they were kneeling down working on the truck. If that steel projectile would have hit one of the boys in the leg ....... or in the chest ....... or in the head ........ I was in the house at the time. I heard the blast .... thinking that maybe the oxygen tank exploded or something. I said .... Oh My God. Then I heard the boys laughing, and I said .... Thank you God. I'm only writing this as a friendly precaution to everyone. The ball joints were original .... therefore sealed (no grease fitting). But when things are "sealed," like joints, roller/thrust bearings, etc .... it is done with hard rubber (I think). But, someway, somehow .... the ball joint became so tightly sealed, and I assume the internal grease was cooking from the heat and producing gas/pressure, and it turned into a potentially tragic accident. I would have never thought it."

"The struggle is real folks" - lol Wish id thought of that line all those years ago when I was doing this kind of work and killing my hands - and it will kill your hands. 25+ years of shop work on cars and trucks and 15+ years of repetitive factory work really did a number on mine, ended up with two surgeries and hands havent been worth a damn since. Moral of the story: use air tools at every opportunity and avoid repetitive factory work at all costs---or hire yourself a "Josh"-lol.

This felt like a 10 minute video... I enjoy this stuff. Watching others tackle something helps me tackle something similar in a similar way.

Uhhgg ... this brings back bad memories. Did this same job out in the driveway, 25°F outside, on the neighbor's '06 F-250, with no torch, nor Big Nasty! The whole neighborhood knew I was working that day! Nothing like hearing F-bombs break the silence of nature, and echo off the hills. 😁 They make some sweet mini-cannons over at Brooks! I've got one (not a Brooks, though - says "Spain" on the barrel) that I usually bust out every Independence Day, load her full of 300 grains of powder, and stuff it full of paper towels, LOL. She's pretty loud! One time I tossed in a handful of BB's from the pellet gun, in front of a 350 grain charge. That one peeled the brass off the end of the barrel, HAHAHA! Was alot of fun, though! Made a nice pattern on the old metal shed I had. SWEET hammer and punch set! I think you've got about $500 worth of quality stuff there!! Still have to hook my torches up! Finally got a set from one neighbor, and the gas bottles from my other neighbor. Had to get some adaptors to make it work. Just needs to be hooked up, & I'll be melting parts, lol. I should try and do that some time today ... Lookin' forward to Part 2!

Okay, I watched the video.... Very nice. I am a connoisseur of the overly heavy hammer myself.... I used to work for a guy, he used to say "Now, don't force it.... Get a bigger hammer...." I'm not sure if he was kidding or not, but I still do it to this day....

I can relate to that statement at 11:16. My first experience was at 16. Told my Dad I wanted to change the valve cover gaskets on his 1957 Ford 292 v8. (He had just bought a brand new 1963 1/2 Galaxy) Next thing he knew, the engine was out of the car and in pieces all over the back yard. "You might as well overhaul it now." My plan worked.

You got a good laugh out of me with the "What A Jerk" line !!! Big nasty is a tool that I cant do without. Thank you for doing what you do.

I bought an OEM 1/2 drive battery impact gun at the pawn shop 2 weeks ago got the complete set up for 45 dollars and it surprised me I've tried it on everything and amazing it not only does lug nuts but it removes and installs ball joints so I'm glad I brought it I won't use it on every balljoint job I just tested it and it takes driveshaft bolts out with ease you know they have locktite the entire length I would recommend OEM to anyone now

Thanks for making videos Eric. Learned most of this stuff from the videos you have made! A little tip about the pickle forks. If they are not big enough, get some large washers, cut them so they will fit over the balljoint studd. Use them as leverage. Works like a charm for me :)

Please trim those mushrooms off the end of the pickle fork... my Grandpa would always yell at us for that... still can hear him. they can break off and go into your hand holding the fork or chisel... love the channel Eric and the humor..!

Tanks fur da video! I had to do upper and lower ball joints as well as bearings and all steering components on my 2010 F350 Soopa Duty 4x4 and this video helped greatly. Lots of labor and special tools.

If I was a tool, I'd get all warm and fuzzy to find that I'd been actually used. Many tools live their days slowly dying of rust in a dark toolbox. Beauty marks are a badge of honor.

I worked gas utility & we use brass shovels, chisels, hammers & punches! check the brake hose looked like it got hot!

I used to love doing these on the 2wd's. They called for 4+ hours and I could get them busted out in less than 2. Was a good money maker for me. I never pressed them out or used a bj tool I used heat and a air hammer and they were so simple.

Very well thus far. One safety thought- I'm glad you wear dark lenses while flinging hot, very bright metal about. How about protecting your eyes the rest of the time? This is from a guy who lost over a week of work and scratched his eyes when rust got into them 46 years ago. I'm now 71 yrs of age.

Oh my. Those hammers. My brass hammer and "chisel" are absolutely wrecked.

The passenger side comes apart pretty easy if you lift up the bottom of the tie rod stud with a floor jack, then strike the knuckle between the two rod ends.
