Dude thank you for making a succinct video and not wasting everyone's time with nonsense. This is how all "How to" videos should be made.

Thanks for all the great focus vids Mark, they have been a big help. I just swapped my thermostat after a garage replaced mine as part of a service and an overheating issue arose. The replacement didn't fix the problem. It occured to me that with the unusual position of the stat on this engine, the bleed valve might be backwards. I removed the jiggle pin valve from my thermostat leaving a small hole and the overheating was gone! Hope this helps someone out.

I bought a new thermostat, but the temperature is still rising. The problem is the thermostat is 100%. Can you explain more where your hole was?

Great video, but it would be less confusing for others if you listed the year of Focus and engine series you were working on for a better reference.

Word of Advice: The spring part of the thermostat must go towards the engine block NOT towards the cooler. My used car had it wrong which is why it kept overheating. The schematics on 7zap from the manufacturer seem to be wrong since they seem to demand the thermostat to be installed with the spring section towards the cooler.

How do you get to the housing without removing the alternator?

It is any problems if we eliminate the original thermostat and put another thermostat on the hose wich exit out of cilinder head and go up to the big radiator?
@siplito9 ай бұрын
Can it be the Thermostat you removed was originally installed woth the wrong side towards front? Accourding to the schematics, the spring section shall show towards the front of the vehicle on the 1.6 Zetec. Might a wrong orientation cause heating problems since the jiggle pin on the thermostat can not work properly when installed against flow direction? Or does the orientation not matter?

How much coolant should I expect to collect while draining

I did this job and now my engine won't crank. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Great video! Thanks! I have done that on my 1.6 Ford Focus (one of the two thermostat housing gaskets was leaking). I cannot see how the thermostat can be removed without removing the alternator first. Maybe using special tools? It must be said that when removing the alternator, it is imperative to disconnect the battery and that the mechanic must pay special attention to the thermostat and thermostat housing gaskets refitting.
@markambrose779 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. Without removing the alternator the access is very tight with the radiator in the way (for angle). But people say to can do it, but getting to the bolts on the thermostat housing blind, in my opinion is almost impossible. Gaskets may need to be renews if very old, they tend to warp and tear over time. ;)

It's certainly possible, but fiddly - I managed it last night. I used a 6" extension bar and a small 1/4" socket. It's easier if you can remove the hoses before tackling the bolts. The top right and bottom right bolts can be seen so are quite easy. The top left can just about be seen if you look down behind the alternator. You can just about see lower left bolt if you look under the hose outlets. In my case, the seal had perished slightly for the smaller hose. Since I didn't have a replacement to hand, I simply refitted it the other way round and it seems to be holding up so far. I will replace it with a new one ASAP. You don't need to drain the entire system, I simply loosened the hoses and collected the water in a bucket. Mine is a 1.6 Zetec SE engine.

I fit loads of these as the housing warps and the seals leak, an easy job 20 mins max and I don't take the alternator off ! that normally means removing and fitting stretch belts as well.
@Purplino8 жыл бұрын
+gstree do you use special tools to work on stretch belts?
@gstree8 жыл бұрын
+Enzo Asprino You can remove and fit them without special tools but if you are working on cars as your job then it pays to use the right tools.
@hyperion80087 жыл бұрын
It's not a stretch belt on these engines (1.4/1.6 Zetec) they have a spring loaded tensioner that you can back off by fitting a spanner in the pulley.

This is for 2004 and older. The 2005 and newer have the alternator on the back side of the motor and the power steering pump on the front.

This is one of the hardest works ive done. There is no fucking space to get out the screws under the Thermostat. I have the 1.6 Ti-VCT Engine. You need small hands!! After 3 Hours i get the two screws out.

The video is incomplete, before dismantling the dynamo and others, the serpent belt must be loosened, it is very difficult and most important when assembling no one can put it back as it was
