Ford Mach-E real-world detailed review of the new electric EV Mustang SUV. Mach-e is Ford's first mass production EV and it's an SUV, albeit with a Mustang badge. Jonny Smith conducts one of his detailed (wintery) reviews of the electric Mach-e, both driving on the snowy UK roads and a walk around what is Ford's 379 miles (610km) range Tesla Model 3 Y rival. Is it a muscle car? Of course not. It has the pony badge as opposed to the blue oval, but it is a 5 door, 5 seater Crossover with range and tech at the top of its agenda.
Welcome to The Late Brake Show.
There are 4 versions of the Ford Mach-e on sale, with a choice of awd and rwd, then a standard or extended range battery pack. The forthcoming GT model promises sub 5 second 0-62mph and added body styling (to mimic the Mach-e 1400 drift lunatic project).
RANGE (WLTP)
Standard Range RWD = 273 miles (439km)

Standard Range RWD = 6.9 secs
Standard Range AWD = 6.3 secs
Extended Range RWD = 7.0 secs
Extended Range AWD = 5.8 secs
Top speed = 111mph (all models)

Sold our GT last week and placed an order for a Mach E. The GT was a wonderful car which I'll miss sorely, however it just wasn't getting used enough. The beauty of the Mach E is the more I drive it, the more it pays back, the GT did the opposite.

Seriously tho this car looks like a bloody good effort to me. I'm not overly bothered about the naming: Ford can name their own cars how they want. I hope it's successful and I think it could well get many newcomers into an EV. I wouldn't mind being seen in it, no problem!

Just Jonny giving his impressions on the car(s) he's reviewing. The dividers in the front are a USDM requirement. Single storage spacers over a certain size have to have an illuminated (often glow in the dark) escape handle to stop kidnapping. Lots of cars put dividers in the space to avoid having to put a mechanism in place to do this, but usually the dividers are easily removable.

Thanks for this Jonny - a great review which nicely points out the positives and negatives of the car without simply relying on the marketing info you are no doubt provided with. One question - why do BEV manufacturers always put the charging leads in either the boot or, worse still, an under boot area where you need to empty the boot to get to them? In cars like this, where there is a frunk / froot and the charging point is at the front of the car would it not be better to fit it in to an under bonnet area? Just a thought.

I think it will be here until we settle on the developed functions of EVs. They are still evolving and the big screen gives the option of adding controls for new functions. I have a Tesla Model 3 and there have been quite a number of controls changes that couldn't have been added or tweaked without the flexibility and software control that a screen offers. I'm not saying a screen is necessarily the best way to present controls ... it can be a pain too ... but fixed controls are by definition fixed and that is a big drawback during this time of transition and development.
@storm14k
@storm14k 3 жыл бұрын
Not really a fad. It just makes sense. Cars are becoming computers with propulsion mechanisms. If you're looking for physical buttons they'd remove the ability to introduce and update features. A smaller screen makes it harder to see and use the controls. Really can't see this going away unless voice control makes leaps.

I did visual comparison shopping for dashboards, and I think the current Cayenne has the best one. If I was going to blatantly copy another manufacturer's operator interface, that's the one I'd copy. If they want to make a computer interface for interacting with the car's computer, they ought to make an automotive variant on the USB control stations made for editing digital audio, and they ought to sell 20 different variants, because easily customizable operator interface is a big benefit of interacting with computers. So, emphasizing that you're interacting with a computer, like a touch screen does, while throwing away the customization benefit just makes the manufacturer come across as an iconoclast who thinks the customer is stupid.

Don’t like screens in cars or trucks, you should be able to turn them off at night to help with night vision, and in my experience, you can’t! Plus, to turn on the radio, you usually have to go through at least 3 sub menus, multiple presses, compared to just turning the radio on, on a normal radio. Supposed to be futuristic but in actuality, it’s about ten steps back!

@The Late Brake Show - Great review! Agree with you on many points. A little concerned that the windows, including the pano, were fogged up some. Speaking of pano, one note of clarification. You mentioned a couple of times the panoramic roof is optional. At least here in the US, the pano roof is not really an option. It's standard on all models except the Select (cheapest), and there is no "option" to select a pano roof when you order.

It's not doing it for me Jonny, as a low mileage driver I think I'm going to protect the planet by just keeping my Range Rover longer, thus preventing it going to a high mileage polluter! That last person knew that ICE cars use bleed heat off the engine for cabin heating, and just assumed that meant that EVs didn't have heaters at all. People also like to "gotcha" at me by pointing out that our electric bill must have gone up when we got EVs. I always point out that that's true, but we don't buy gasoline anymore, which somehow takes them by surprise.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't know why more EVs aren't bringing fake engine sound as something to play with. When you think how good games can make cars sound.. surely that same sound file can come from the car speakers complete with faux gear shifts. Never as a permanent feature though. Some days you might want it on, to play about with V10 sound or whatever you pick that day, other times you'll want it off to enjoy the silence and your music. The ultimate switchable exhaust that can never annoy neighbours

Jonny deserves a medal for doing this thorough & thoughtful review in that atrocious weather. As for the 'Mustang' label, a thought: Many of us are considering - for the first time - shifting to EVs for our transportation. When you think of it...that's quite a change. Is it then - really - so much of a change for Ford to redefine its branding. Personally, I find most Mustangs to be crap, this Mach-E is quite an improvement.

Excellent review as always Mr S, despite the tough conditions. As an ex-BMW and Porsche driver, and a keen motorcyclist, I do look for good steering and dynamics in my cars. I've currently got a Ford S Max which has been brilliant cheap motoring since the kids have been very young i.e. that age when you need to take a lot of stuff with you everywhere. The S Max made the cut due to the chassis quality and steering feel (it's the mark 1 model so allegedly better than the mark 2) and the 2.2l diesel is hardly fast but with 2 kids on board who will vomit everywhere at the first sign of brisk driving on a twisty road, it's fast enough most of the time. The car is fun to hussle along and it's so practical and well designed for family life I'm struggling to see what to replace it with. Whilst the Mach E is a half decent looking and sounding option (given the steering feel and handling balance), it's stylish rear hatch probably rules it out for me. Shame they don't make an electric S Max - short bonnet, huge interior, flexible configurations, able to spec it up with all sorts of toys and a decent chassis. It's not perfect, with poor quality trim and it's quite noisy but the shape would make a good electric car I think. Of course, the main issue for Ford is that only SUVs are trendy, so anything else would sell poorly.

I think Ford made a big mistake by not launching the car with a high performance Halo model. There's always been a V6 Mustang, but Ford would never introduce an all new Mustang and only show off the V6 version to the public/media while saying "oh yeah, a V8 version is coming later". If the Mach-E debuted with a Shelby version that ran a Tesla-like 10 second quarter mile, a lot less people would doubt it being a "real" Mustang, and people would genuinely respect the car. I assume they're pushing this version because it's more affordable, but just like the ICE version, you show off the Halo model to get people excited about the car and in to the dealerships, then sell them the V6 version when they realize they'll have to sell a kidney for the Shelby. It's hardly unusual to sneakily market a car with a "From: $" price while only showing off the expensive model.

@@gooscooby5988 Yeah I know they're bringing out the sporty versions later, but my point was that they should have launched with a sporty version to get people excited about an EV Mustang.
