1500 mile real world road trip in a Tesla Model Y - the most practical EV in Europe? The ultimate electric SUV? The news about continued rises of fuel costs is grim, but hopefully it will act as a catalyst for increasing renewable energy adoption.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show. Subscribed yet?
With that in mind, Jonny spent last week driving to, from and around Scotland and the North West, filming content… in an EV. Specifically the £55,000 331-mile range Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD.
Instead of a brief launch drive, we thought it was about time Jonny got to know the UK spec Model Y and do a bit of real-world long distance travel in one. Tesla tried to lend us one, but couldn't manage the time frame we needed. Step in ‘R Symons EV’ specialists, whom we must namecheck (www.rsymons.co.uk / / rsymonsltd ) because owner Richard immediately offered to lend Jonny his two week old Tesla Y and load miles onto it. Good chap.

Thank you for this review! I have had my Y since early March, the sum of its parts makes for a wonderful family car in so many ways. It's my first EV and driving the Y is effortless, the torque and handling is superb, 'one' peddle driving, sound system, the view out. For suspension, I have 19" wheels with pressures set to 40psi, that seems to be the comfort setting. Don't worry too much about the speedo to the left of sight, (or right if in EU etc) it isn't an issue. Set the seat/steering to your profile, partner to theirs, set once, tweak and forget. I have some issues with Spotify not linking, mobile chap will pop out to fix. Don't worry about being labeled a Tesla fan boy, I'm not, it was just, for me, the best car to suit our needs and an easy purchase with respect to lead times. The car is great, in fact it's a joy, it makes you feel good, it makes you look forward to the drive, I am also a 'cool' dad in my children's school!

I have had a model 3 for almost three years and have just ordered the Y. I cannot find words to describe just how fantastic Teslas are, and have to say that I think they look absolutely amazing. What an absolutely excellent 'programme', not just a car review, but enjoyable, thoughtful viewing. And the production level was right up there with TV channels. As an overview of Tesla ownership, it seemed spot on (I don't own one nor any EV), pinpointing the essence of the appeal, their unique app to charging ecosystem, even down to in-car entertainment designed to wile away charging times. Other EV cars look better, better built, much cheaper, but only Tesla is the complete package. This is peak (so far...) LBS car video, cue applause...

That was funny when you were searching for the hazard lights. That is one of the very few physical buttons! Remember: 1) the owners manual is available on the screen; 2) you can use voice command to perform many operations. I’ve just completed a round trip of 1,300 miles in my 2021 Model 3 SR+. I had 5 charging stops each way, averaging ~20 minutes per charge. By simply timing the stops (they were every 90-120 minutes) with bio breaks (food, restroom, stretches…), it worked very well with no inconvenience. I have gone on 1,100 mile, 10-day vacation trips with my family (2 adults, 2 teenage boys), all our gear, including full spare tire and camera gear, in my Model 3. The cabin was kept just for people - all our stuff was either in the trunk or the frunk. Plenty of space, including headroom. Great video.

After owning a Corsa E for the last few months I can totally get the appeal of the Tesla charging network and how seamlessly the app works. Something other manufacturers are way off the mark with. Am home charging when at all possible, limited by the lack of fast chargers in the midlands and increasingly finding fast chargers are almost certainly in use when you arrive at them.

Really nice to see a well balanced review having recently watched Jack's 'camping' trip on Fully Charged. I tested a Y when they first came out and was pretty blown away with the whole package if I'm honest. Prior to that, my only other ev experience came in the form of a BMW i3S which I also thought was brilliant. Realistically not looking to buy for 2 or 3 years yet but I love the tech in EVs even though I've always been a petrol head at heart. Hoping that during this time the coding that surfaced a while back regarding air susp becomes a reality along with head up display. Looks are so subjective but I actually like how they look so clean and unfussy. They're clearly form following function and time and time again they smash the efficiency tests on all the reputable channels. Y for me all day long please 👍

I have a MY on order, coming in May. I went for the Y because when you spec up the EV6, ioniq, id4 etc to a similar level to the MY they’re not that much cheaper. Plus you can get a MY with an 8 week delivery time. All the others are close to a year! Then when you take into account the charging network and the larger boot it becomes a no brainier. Tesla are constantly updating the software so the car and infotainment will get better and be kept up to date. I have a 10 year old bmw and it feels so dated now as the idrive system hasn’t been updated. I also have to agree the styling is pretty awful. It was styled in a wind tunnel to give maximum range.

From what I have seen EV6 has worse aerodynamics and battery disappears in Your eyes going over 130km/h. Hyundai Ionic had some coldgate issues and also heating couldn't work while DC charging in winter. Mustang Mach-e in lane assist mode denies to take any turns on highways. Mercedes'es EV have one of highest kwh consumption of them all. Older EVs don't have heat pump, most don't offer front trunk. Tesla does everything right, it ticks all boxes.

Got my Model Y 3 months ago, and this is a great review. I guess I am lucky in that I like the styling. I wouldn’t call it sexy, but the lines are clean and timeless. My favorite shape is the rear quarter panel. You didn’t mention much about the all glass roof, but I think it has a huge effect on how you feel inside the car. I would entertain upgrading to an air suspension at some point-I think your critique here is spot on. Another thing I may spend on is a small display to go in front of the steering wheel. I’ve seen some that look nice, but the cost is nearly a grand. Thanks for such a great production!

Before we went with the model Y long range a year ago we tried many different EV competitors . In the end we went with what was practical. Some others I liked the looks of but were quirky . And the supercharger network was a big plus. Most of the time we charge at home. Here in my state the petrol is at $5.00 per gallon. So my Range Rover is at $80.00 to top off. The Tesla at home is $4.27 to top off. The price at the supercharger is $7 to$9 per full charge. It's a no brainer. Wife loves the Tesla and I have become to love it from an engineering point of view. At one point we had our eye on the Model S. A friend had purchased the S and so the wife and I went out for a drive. It is insane. I have owned over the years many fast European cars. The Y fits in well between too fast and fast enough. Thanks for great videos and stories on this channel. Had an i3 for 5 years(2017-2019) , and did get back to a practical diesel car. I now have sold it for a new BEV. I considered most of these models and fell down to a bare bone Skoda Enyaq 80X i will get next month,( asked if I could get it without the screen in the dash..). The Skoda was the car that ticked most off my requirements, 4x4, ok ground clearance, practical, typed for both roof cargo and towing. I do not like one-pedal-driving, so for me it is important that the Enyaq has paddle shift where I can manually decide the regen strength when driving. Like to drive cars, so I also have enthusiast cars with manual stick from the 60&70 in the garage. The Enyaq is more a “station wagon” than a SUV, an Octavia Scout or Volvo V60 CrossCountry BEV had been on my short list, Kia IV6 is has also my interest.

You too are a genius Jonny! Thanks for this amazing review and commentary. For the record, I bought an eGolf in 2018 (still own the vehicle) after watching your video; it was both helpful and funny too. Regarding the Model Y, we recently cancelled our VW ID 4 order (1 1/2 year wait) after a single test drive of a Model Y. It occurred to us that had we not test driven the Model Y, we would not have appreciated that a car could be as innovative and what seems like the future of personal transportation. Personally, my wife and I quite like the front or rear look of the Model Y; we've been VW folks for many years and like the rounder lines of both the older Golfs & Tiguans. I can't wait for our delivery of the Model Y which will ship from Shanghai to Vancouver Canada with the LFM battery. Again, thanks for the many years of your insightful videos. Cheers!

Jonny you're a beaut. Great review as always. I'm getting in on the Ioniq 5. One year wait list here in B.C. Like the hvac buttons, range of 300 miles in rwd long range spec, insane charging speeds for road tripping, comfortable suspension and seats also for road tripping. Jonny as a recommendation to you ; if you could please start doing acceleration tests from 50 mph-80 mph it would be greatly appreciated. Great Video - I have tried all the competition and they all have good points and bad points, but for me the Model Y was the best all rounder by far. Great video, the white seats are fine, they clean up really easy. I have a Y and would still only buy one because it’s better for everything (road trips included) than anything else and now I would find it hard to change. The other charging networks can hopefully catch up soon though. I think it looks ok, not ugly but more pretty generic maybe. Looks never bothered me.

Agree with pretty much everything in the video. I've had a Model 3 for two years and have ordered another one (replacement, not additional!). The Y was £50/month more on the company car lease scheme and while I would've liked the convenience of the hatchback, it's not an issue often enough to justify £600 per year. The boot's pretty big: luggage for four adults going on holiday is fine and I chucked a bale of hay in this morning. It's just a slightly awkward opening. Most reviews say that the suspension in the Y is noticeably harder and more jiggly - presumably to cope with extra height, so I think the 3 will be better most of the time anyway. Things I don't like: the indicator stalk is rubbish - very unpredictable about when it cancels. The satnav is miles worse than Waze or Google maps. No option for "3D view" so where there are multiple exits or lanes splitting it's much more difficult to work out which one to take. It's also less accurate because it doesn't update often enough. There was a 15 mile 2x4 lane dual carriageway built near me and it took 2 years to be included in navigation instructions (made worse because it showed on the screen so the instructions didn't match the map). I went adrift in Leeds yesterday and I'm sure it's due to a road layout change that's not yet in the nav system (very clear instructions to be in the RH lane of two, but didn't go where the satnav expected). Obviously this would be an issue with almost any other car manufacturer as well, but Tesla gets software updates so it feels like a let down. Final one is the auto wipers. They don't turn on when they should and go into monsoon mode when you use the screen wash. It uses the cameras instead of a separate system like every other manufacturer. It's therefore even worse in the dark when there aren't many objects for it to judge against. So after that, why did I order another? Mostly the charging network. Two years ago it was a really easy decision. Now there's a choice of decent cars which is great, but I think Tesla still just about make the best EV - no one is matching their efficiency and the engineering seems less compromised. And again, the charging. I hope I choose something different in 3 years, but Tesla isn't standing still (the current Model 3 is measurably better than mine in ways that you'll notice) and there's a long way for everyone else to go on charging networks.

And interior quality although criticised for me is better than its rivals. It's also the bit I get to look at whilst driving. Others have improved but it's performance is still one of the best. Plus the buying process is straight forward and real term costs Inc putting through a business make it cheaper for me than my previous £34k leased golf GTD doing 15k miles a year.

@@CrankCyclingChannel I'm in my 3rd EV now, all have had a "firm" ride, particularly uncomfortable at times for the passenger. The bigger the battery, the heavier the car, the harder the suspension to support that weight. The Y has a bigger battery and being taller than the 3 has more weight and body roll to supress, so harder suspension necessary which compromises the ride quality. If/when adjustable air suspension is an option the Y would be far better.

Great review but something to bear in mind there are similar BEVs for sale at cheaper prices but once you start adding panoramic roof, heat pump and equivalent extras to match the Tesla the price generally increases past the Tesla price point (been there done that) Here's something that will show the difference between the younger generation and the present car owning generation, I bought a model three and the kids on the street love it but when I mentioned to them I was going to change the standard wheels for alloys they said "why are you going to fit old mans wheels to a modern car?" 3:20 Also brilliant thing about the process of plotting a course on EVs is that some cars will pre-heat the battery for the charge to optimize it for the charge. Coldgating is a terrible curse up here in the Nordics. Just noticed Nissan is putting a MANUAL pre-heating button on its new EV, which is so cool compared to just completely forgetting people in cold climates or forcing people to use (those who know about it) pre-heating via plotting a course. Another issue is that not all cars have all third-party chargers on their on-board computer...

Essentially, at least for a while, the computers were there, but their usefulness was lacking, with people resorting to third party smartphone apps and web services for better routing. Can’t beat a Scottish roadtrip. Lovely film Jonny. And it is a film, I have an S, I don't want a Y but I still watched this because it's just a great watch. Reminds me I need a home visit!! You're so right about the whole Tesla "thing": Drove to Berlin last Autumn from the Midlands by just entering an address and booking the chunnel. That was it, the car did everything else including charging enough to make decent pace for the unlimited Autobahn sections. So easy. Not many other cars and certainly no EVs I'd have done that in. With regard to Superchargers, they are a great experience but remember that they are opening up to other cars in a few months time. They are already being prepared for this. It won't be all stalls and it won't be all locations but they are opening up and that's a good thing (for EVs) but does tilt the ownership proposition somewhat. I mean you're right about HUD and all the competitors have this and are cheaper too. Plus in a few months you'll have access to a better car (there's no doubt the Tesla is a great EV but is it a great *car*?) and still have access to the Supercharger network too. Tesla are growing like mad and selling cars like crazy (see this week's SMMT figures for that alone) and that's where they're failing to scale: Service and parts supply has hit an all time low. Some service centres eg MK, have simply stopped accepting bookings due to busyness and parts supply, particularly for accident repair parts are becoming months in some cases.... This is starting to affect insurance as accident repair is taking far too long leaving drivers in hire cars.... That affects insurability. There are many things Tesla needs to do to keep growing but improving parts and service as well as Superchargers (which are queuing now in some locations) is very overdue when compared to the rate they're opening production capacity. Styling is bar of soap dull but the software is very, very hard to beat especially, as you surmise quite correctly, when you're used to it. I found a Taycan to be a learner car - for experienced EV drivers. Like the RS GT Audi, they're designed to keep ICE customers feeling familiar but if you've spent 4 or more years in a real EV, they just feel like poor imitations: Great cars but not great EVs.....

By the end of April I will be waving goodbye to my Nov 2022 registered EQB 350 having done approx 7500 miles and collecting my new Model Y LR. It just does so many things better. My experience driving and charging the Y was definitely the deciding factor.

I’d have many of the other available EV’s for styling, but as a day to day car that works in the real world it would have to be the Tesla. No question. I wonder how practical the Supercharger network will be once it’s opened up for other EV users?!

"styling"? Normally frivolous "chrome"? Maybe "vents"? Depends how they open the network. What they SHOULD do is open say 25%, with the proviso that they can add (planning permission) a similar number. Result? "Others" would get a useful increase in *reliable* charging. Tesla owners would get many more *V3* chargers. No complaints......

Funny thing is, I find the looks of most Teslas ever so slightly repulsive. However, in the same measure, I find them wonderfully sublime. I’ve never heard what the inspiration for the design stemmed from, but I’d like to believe it involved a great deal of understatement. Because once inside, you can’t help but to become captivated. The tech, layout, and yet again the understated total of it all. Yes’m my pick out of the group you mentioned would definitely be Tesla, especially the “Y”.

Doug, I beg you… go and drive one ? Have a listen to the sound system. Peek at the spacious rear seats and speak to a colleague or friend that owns one. It’s expensive …BUT ; (i) a 320D cooking version is 40K (ii) factor in warranty/ fuel and servicing and it’s , over 8 years the cheapest and safest car you can put your family in. Keep us updated if you buy one !

I have a Y here in America. If you need just one car, need to tow, need a lot of storage and range there is not a better car. I love it. She's a sentient being.

Honestly am not a huge electric car fan but this is definitely what I'd have if really needed, the range, the usability, charging etc is so much better then the others. Looks wise I think it's a committee designed car not by one person, it has to appeal to alot of people in a lot of different areas. It's neither boring nor exciting, it ain't gorgeous or ugly it ain't outlandish or subtle. That has surprised me though all that driving no anxiety range and all for 90 quid, definitely can see the benefits tbh
