Man, this was a life saver! Succesfully performed this on my mondeo Mk3 -04 petrol, (during harsh Swedish winter in the dark) I took away the grill first. Mine could be opened "halfway" so to say, that is i could turn the key to left but not to the right, which gave me some extra space to just turn off these black holders on top of the grill with a screwdriver, whole and well. The only unvolontary damage was a small piece of plastic from the hidden part of the grill, just above where the hood locks to the mechanism, as we had to oull out the grill with quite some force before it let loose! The plastic shaft gets worn at the end, either at the barrel, the latch or both. When the shaft is worn it has lost material and can't actuate the bonnet latch with a full key turn. Obviously Ford could avoid this problem with a metal shaft but they want to save one penny per car. 👍

I finally got the same problem. Key turned very lightly anticlockwise (nothing happened) and clockwise it felt normal but the bonnet did not open. I tinkered locking mechanism with a bended wire, I'm not sure did that help or not. But I tried once more with my key and after some effort, the bonnet popped open!! Not sure what happened...that plastic connecting rod turns clockwise OK with key, but anticlockwise nothing seems to happen?! I tried and put a screwdriver into the "jaws" of that locking mechanism to simulate bonnet latch and happened to notice, that turning clockwise released my "fake" bonnet latch. Wind latch is anemic. Shouldn't that plastic connecting rod turn anticlockwise, when you turn your key? The first metal shaft from lock turns clockwise OK, but not anticlockwise. Is the lock worn or what?
