Hey Alan, I am really starting to enjoy your videos :) and I am serious :) so as for the HPP gasket leak I was wondering if that applies to the MK4 2.0l tdci as well since I've had 3 fords with this engine (galaxy and 2 kugas 2010-2014) and they all seem to leak oil from around this area so I suspect the same problem. If this is the case do you have the part numbers for this gaskets? I believe they are slightly different in shape from the MK5. Thank you in advance and keep up the good videos. Cheers!

small fuel pumps and vacuum pumps are fastened with small bolts and have the property of overheating, sometimes damaging the thread in the engine block or breaking the bolt then a lot of things happen. Proper tightening force is important to prevent grease from escaping and tightening the bolt.

I'm about to tackle this job on my 2016 Mk5 that has the standard HPFP oil leak(it also needs the fuel line replaced that goes to the filter head- some numptie has broken the lock tab) as for the mount gasket for the adapter plate for the HP pump i think i will also use locktite 518 on it, I believe this will stop it leaking in the future....lastly does the HP fuel pump require timing ? Or is it simply just bolt it in & away u go?

Constantly moving diesel tech on an engine design that’s been around for years. That drive box looks sooo after the fact but necessary in order to drive the pump correctly. Maybe going down the route of a really good liquid gasket maker might help as that outer hole is so close to the edge and miles from the nearest bolts as is the main hole so the clamping pressure is likely pants and not crushing that gasket properly and definitely not holding that pressure adequately! Reminds of the old mechanical fuel pumps on the CVH that’s soft aluminium would be hammered into a curve by the pushrod over time and the two bolts and gasket weren’t enough to seal it

Thanks for the upload always like your vids. See ya
@alan4x
@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
hi yes it is straight forward..you don't have to lock anything, just unbolt the pump once all the ancillaries are removed and when refitted... no bleeding needed...the pump in the fuel tank pushes fuel to the high pressure pump so it will start pretty quickly

hi anthony, yes if you have the same engine it will be the same procedure ..just in a kuga body shell, not sure about the kuga engine mount but if it is the same as on the mondeo you do need to remove the mount to get the top cover off but you can put a jack with some soft padding under your sump to support the engine while the mount is off

@@alan4x Hi again Alan, thanks for the reply. Regarding the pump to camshaft timing,,, is this because as you would withdraw the pump in any position - I guess it could kick rotate due to the spring pressure from the pump. So my point is,, is there any point in chancing not timing the cam as the engine crank would be stationary? Also,,, I see that the inner gasket does not have sufficient /even bolt down force around the oil feed area. A 3 bolt 120 degree would have been a better arrangement in this area. I was going to chance a very fine smear of hylomar sealent around the outside of the embossed oil feed area as a back up. What do you think? Regards. Anthony

Hi Alan. I really like your videos. It help me a lot with my car do to a lot of repairs by myself. Today i will retrofit my MK5 with new intercooler from biturbo. But i found that as i know now i have a standard problem with leaking. My local garages don't believe in gasket problem. They want to change almost everything else around and charge me a lot. That is why I bought new gasket and want to try to do it myself. Do i need to remember about something important when i take out the pump to not destroy engine or me (fuel there is under high pressure and i need to reduce the pressure before i unscrew it) ? :) Is there any special position that it has to be fixed ? Or it is very simple i just take it out put new gasket and put together again ? :)
@alan4x
@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
hi, there won't be any fuel pressure, there is a metal cage at the rear of the pump and the wiring connector is a little tricky but you will unbolt the pump and remove it and then unbolt the gear casing behind the pump...nothing needs to be timed or set in any position. there is a plastic turbo pipe that runs from the turbo to a turbo hose at the front of the gearbox..it needs to be removed which is a pain if you have never done one....if you do attempt it then just take your time
@MrDiegulec
@MrDiegulec 5 жыл бұрын
@@alan4x thanks for answer. My first attempt today was not so bad. Who fixed this plastic hose from turbo that way ?! After taking out the battery and with a lot of scratches on my hand later i was able to take it out :). Hope tomorrow i will do second part and disconnect all the fuel hoses and take out the pump. Do i need to be worry about air stuck inside fuel pump after fixing it ? Or it's different in MK5 than in MK4 and electric pump will do the job so after fixing pump i just need to start the car and be happy that oil finally stopped leaking ?

need to add a ballast resistors to compensate for the missing bulb resistance. Get the same problem with many cars/motorcycles when you swap to a LED bulb if they dont have a purely electronic turn signal controller. The resistance in the bulb acts as part of a timing circuit but when you remove the bulb and swap to a LED the resistance drops thus the timing cycle becomes shorter.

I would definitely buy the gaskets and o ring from your ford parts dealer and the part numbers are in the video at 11.46 minutes. once the battery and tray is out of the way and remove the windscreen wipers and scuttle panel at bottom of windscreen. on a kuga it is pretty straight forward to remove the pump

@@alan4xthanks! Interesting that you say it’s not terrible on a Kuga (Mk2), the Haynes manual goes on about it being a bit of a painful job. I find it interesting that you say you expect it to start leaking again not long after replacement. I saw a few comments about using some loctite gasket maker (574), have you had any luck with that or any other techniques for making the repair last? Thanks

@@alan4x Thanks for the advice. Both gaskets arrived from Ford today along with the O ring (£18 all in). Tomorrows job is to fit them. I'm hoping it isn't too bad of a job but we shall see. Haynes reccomends removing the auxillary belt and fully draining the coolant before doing this job but I can't see the need to do those bits. Am I overlooking something?
@alan4x
@alan4x Ай бұрын
@@Sams-Shednever had to remove the aux belt or drain the coolant in order to remove the high pressure pump although when sliding the pump off it will hit a heater hose on the thermostat housing but you can bend the hose and it will clear.

@@alan4x Thanks for the advice here Alan. I did mine yesterday and it took me about 3.5 hours - not terrible for the first go. Really useful advice and your videos were very helpful. I used some 5922 flange sealant to dress the new gaskets before installation and reassembly in the hope that it might help them last a bit longer, i've been reading around that they sometimes last as little as 30k miles before going again. I have done a comprehensive write up on the Kuga Owners Club and Ford Owners Club forums for anyone else who is interested in doing this job.

All French engines find ways to leak oil. I've never seen a dry one. I've got an ancient XN engine in a Talbot that leaks a small amount from a few spots, I've also got a BX with an XUD that leaks pretty badly, and all TU engines will leak from the rocker cover. I've seen them piss oil from the head gasket too when they get very old. I've not come across a Mk3 Mondeo that leaks oil yet. I'm sure they're out there but all the ones I know are dry as a bone. They tend to burn oil rather than leak it.

Hi Alan, I see lots of comments about using a gasket sealant on the gaskets for the high pressure oil pump. Have you or anyone tried this? I am just about to tackle this job while doing the cam belt. I would be tempted to use blue hylomar heavy. I have used it on many engine parts with great success. Cheers Andy

Hi guys. Sorry for my weak english. I have to point something out, and that is important. These engines (2.0L 150 or 180 HP) are made in cooperation between Ford and PSA. They are not exact te same engines guys. The cylinder block, pistons are common, but some of the engine equipment for sure are different. I was not heard much about high pressure pomp leaks in 508 od C5 and for mondeo is an very typical thing. Also way in saving polar bears is different. Dry DPF versus FAP. So saying these are the same engines, is mistake.

Jaguar V12. No, on a serious note, the diesel used in the transit for years (and still is) is a British engine. It was used in the Mondeo, but only for the Mk3. By the time the Mk4 came out, Ford and PSA jointly agreed to use PSA engines for cars and Ford engines for vans. The Ford engines are more robust and torquey but are gruffer since they were designed for the Transit from the start, rather than evolving from a petrol car engine like PSA's design.

Perhaps the solution is to take the pump off and have a groove machined in the face and fit an o-ring. I have a 2002 Audi that uses a metal gasket just like that on the cam adjuster and it is also impossible to keep sealed.
