Great detective work. I’m confident this is what’s going on with my mountaineer too. I just replaced both upper control arms and ball joints. Even though they were part of the problem, that clunk is still there…

That was the issue with my 2006 expedition 220,xxx miles on it. But every time I used awd or 4x4 it would pop and move the diff around. Took it in didnt have the time to work on it, had new CV axles put in nothing. Watches your video after they told me it might be the diff or the transfer case. Called them told them to look at those bolts. The one above the diff was about 4 turns loose. Fixes it immediately. Big thanks for saving me a bunch of money.

My 04’ mountaineer has been driving me crazy trying to find what’s making that noise. I think you solved it for me!! Gonna check it out as soon as I get a chance!! Thank you for posting this video!! 09/29/2019 Update: My issue wasn’t what this video pointed to. Although it was a loose bolt, it ended up being a loose bolt in the rack and pinion mount on the passenger side. Tightened it up today and the clunking noise went away!! Took 2 of us to figure it out. One moving the wheels, while the other looked and touched the rack for movement. I would have never found it alone.

I have an 06 explorer and it made all kinds of clunking noise in the front end and every time I checked it I couldn't find anything loose. Everything was intact and tight. But the other day something changed and I was able to find the problem. A sway bar link snapped and guess what no more clunking noise. It was either a failing sway bar link or bad sway bar bushings. I replaced them all and it's nice and quiet now. Keep those items in mind if you can't find the source of the noise.

Just bought the truck like 2 weeks ago. 06 mountaineer. Sounded like clunking in front passenger area mostly on coasting and not so much on acceleration. Now today, sounds like a chain slapping or popping noise from under the suv. Hope this is the issue. Thanks for this tip.

I know it's hard to know when to begin recording video but everybody makes these videos after the fix. Is this the same problem I have? Who knows? All I know is the sound the my truck is making. I don't know if it sounds like yours did or not. At least you could grab a couple chunks of scrap metal and bang them, rub them, grind them, mash them, tap them, spin them, or wiggle them. Just do something so we can hear what kind of sound your truck was making BEFORE it got fixed.

YEA! The biggest issue with these SUV's are the AWD systems. Viscous coupling locking up and its in 4 wheel drive all the time. Then people drive it on drive payment destroying the CV's joints etc.

Wondering if this is the problem with a Lincoln aviator I was looking at, I test drove it and it started clicking and clicking pretty badly I thought the axle or transfer case was shot, wondering if you felt it in wheel and did it get worse turning one way vs the other? The trucks is used and ran great just didn't want to purchase something I couldn't even test drive more then a 1/4 mile lol. I'm gonna go back and check today. Any chance anyone can help me out with my issue here? I have a 98 mountaineer awd and the issue I’m having is a front end roaring/ low pitch whining noise when I accelerate at any speed. It momentarily stops when I let go of the gas but comes back on after when coasting. I’ve change my front hubs, ball joints, shocks break pads and rotors. I just replaced hub assembly on 98 explorer awd... the roaring sound is gone but a metal to metal and clanking noise remains ...bad around 15-35mph then fainter the more speed you have and stops momentarily when turning slightly and steering wheeling jerks as you slow down ... I was guessing maybe cv joint... is that the direction you would go to? I could use the advice... since husbands been gone/past I ain’t got luxury of affording a shop look at it and parts ...

TVWXMAN32 Well, is it not too expensive to replace the whole transfer case? The way it behaves is that when I get close to a lock at turns, the the noise gets really worse and the vehicle almost fails to pull. It behaves as though it's jerking on the left side and it worries me.

Hey Jimmy I have a 2002 Ford F-150 SuperCrew XLT 2wd. It was lifted when I bought it 3 years ago. It. had blocks in the rear and rubber Daystar spring spacer and aftermarket lift springs up front. It did have some noise due to the lift when I went up steep driveways LOL California off roading at the mall. Well I got a wild hair up my ass I wanted the nose higher than the rear so I had a shop remove the 2 inch Daystars spring spacers up front and had them install all steel 3 inch spacer from Torch off road. It was at 39 inches at the top of the wheel well now I’m at 41 1/2 wow. It looks great But may Camber was off they had to do a lot of extra work to the caster and other adjustments (new camber bolts) to get the max pushed out on the camber or my inner tires up front would have worn out. Wow got that corrected. Now I have more noise like a louder clunk at a slight turn or pulling away from my parking spot. Feels like the suspension is in a bind like it’s releasing a force ! Thanks for the idea I will have them check the wheel hubs it goes down the road straight rolls good as I’m gassing it. Feels like a ball joint top or bottom is getting ready to blow or break ! It has blue poly sway bar bushing are all good. Had the shop replace upper control arms and lower ball joints tie rod ends inner outer. Idler arm. Lubed and tightened everything whole front end 2x. It still makes the same noise up the driveways But now I’m stumped by that big clunk! As I take off turning the wheel slightly or not. I will have them check both wheel hubs!!

@FixingWithPassion

@FixingWithPassion

Hum, I don't think so...bad CV joints usually make a clicking sound when going around turn if they are bad. A humming sounds like a drive train issue....drive shaft shaft/unaversial joint or a bad bearing. I'd check the rest of the wheel bearing to make sure then go from there.
@rutrutable
