If you're in the market for a Ford Ranger and you can't quite justify spending the big bucks on the line-up's off-road-ready Raptor - $77,690 (plus on-road costs) - but you won't settle for an XLT, then perhaps the FX4 Max might satisfy your desire for a Ford ute.
Ford has already pretty much made a ute for everyone in their current line-up, but does this FX4 Max special edition - part performance ute, part family car, and part work truck - miss the mark entirely by trying to be something for everyone?

I just bought a fx4max which I was advised by all the brochures that it had a 240 volt inverter it didn't have this item. I rang Ford and was advised it did not fit this item after the 18 June 2021. ALL Dealers were advised of this change I was told by Ford.

If you think of it the Wildtrak costs about the same as the Fx4 Max and that is the comfort luxury Ranger variant. Until recently thr Raptor was the peak 4x4 and the XLT was already quite good. I think Ford is going for this as a offroad focused variant counterpart to the wildtrak. You get great offroad performance and suspension and don't have to aim for the Raptor. Plus towing capacity and load is uncompromised I love this Fx4 and will be getting one

Next time you do an offroad test just drive about 5kms further down the Forest road and use Butterfly Rd quarry. It has much longer and steeper hills.

good review, i have a 21.25 xlt towing 7x4 aluminum box trailer light load 75 liter fridge dual battery 270 darche awning in the tub and im getting 8.3 liter form Nelson Bay to wollombi down to gosford and back to nelson bay no 4 wheel driving in that but some dirt roads, on the hwy at a 110km its doing 7.8 liters

Having owned 4x4 for some time, converting new ones days after driving it off the lot, it is nice to have dealer warranties on after market parts that is considered standard for the model. Yes, most of these options you can do yourself and then when they break, you also can eat the cost, been there done that. Ability to get the 2.0 bi turbo is nice considering in my market, XLT isn’t offered unless you get the Wildtrak which I am not a fan of. In many ways it isn’t the Raptor less, it is the Wildtrak off road addition. Not a fan of the roll bar in the back, step rails are nice and also ground clearance and tire option is a nice stock touch. Stickers, they are optional, so not really worried about them as I wouldn’t want them. Haven’t seen any locally here with the stickers but I am sure they appeal to someone, like the guy getting the truck for his son/daughter that is able to catch them about “I know your the only truck that has those horrible stickers, I know it was you skipping class” haha. Other than that, I can see why Ford let the review truck be the one with the optional stickers as they are going to have to mark that truck down as a promo anyway

I'm a little bit confused about this. Is it actually better than the XLT? Need a comparison video, I want to see the difference between the XLT, FX4 and the Raptor.

I have no idea why these reviewers keep comparing it to the Raptor, hopefully someone will have enough brains to compare it to an XLT so we get a decent review

The FX4 you can get the bi-turbo 2.0 diesel instead of the 2.2 diesel. You can get Fox shocks but they are not the same as on the Raptor, so better than standard but not as good suspension set up as the Raptor. Not as wide as the raptor but more ground clearance than the XLT. FX4Max offers stock a little more than XLT but not much that you can’t bolt on yourself. Difference is, warranted Bolt ons is nice as they are covered in the roadside assist, and the switch panel is nice if you plan on doing some light upgrades or a winch.

I chose the wildtrak X over this but not for any reason other than on road a lot more than anything else. If you look at the American show on the trucks they took the same truck but with the petrol engine and compared it to the Toyota and the top end Jeep of which they expected the jeep to dominate. The ford really surprised in this slow climbing test where it easily accounted for both the other cars. The tech was far superior and this is how it won the test.

65k for a 2015 ute. You get aux switches so it makes up for it.

Looks good like the raptor, but with some extra towing and payload. I'd never need the raptors off road capability anyway so a good trade off for me. Would want a stronger engine for highway use...maybe in the next generation...

I prefer a rear plug rather than a USB, a plug is far more versatile but i agree with the rear vents

The ranger wildtrak is the only one with Dust sealing tailgate and you can not buy the wildtrak rubber from spare parts this isn't acceptable from Ford.

Small engines are rubbish in big cars. When I buy my next 4wd I will not waste my money on a vehicle with a small engine.

Technically speaking i will say that not all small are weak and not all big are strong. It depends on the quality. Mixture of metal for example in the case of this small engine.
