Was thinking of picking up a Ranger, bought a nice used Taco for less than half the price - no regrets. New mid-size truck prices are crazy

I noticed your print article on this Ute describing that the FX4 wasn’t quite a full blooded raptor but it might be better. I just watched this video and it’s clear that the FX4 shares not a single one of the Raptor specific components that make the Raptor a Raptor. The FX4 is, what, an XLT with $2k of Fox’s bottom of the range monotube 2.0? So you guys are the ones who are so keen on manufacturers putting together better packaged and more capable 4x4s and then you go and say that a basic ute with entry level aftermarket suspension is better than the Raptor (that Ford went to the bother of coil converting, wide track, long travel with bypass shocks?) no wonder manufacturers treat is like rich idiots in this country and can sell us outdated underpowered base model, no options available junk, but with stickers, for the same money a F150 Raptor costs stateside. Ps your review came across like an infomercial.

I don't understand how reviewers keep referring the FX4 Max as having "Raptor" suspension. The only thing in common is the brand of shocks. And as you made mention one car is a standard Ranger chassis with entry level shocks. The other is a bespoke chassis that has been engineered to do a different job. These car reviewers could benefit from just sticking their heads underneath the vehicles and having a look rather than go off a brochure.

Rather have the Hilux Mako! Have driven quite a few WT Bi Turbo Rangers and they are pretty nice but for 3.5k tow rating leaf spring is not enough, really the extra torque of the 5cyl 3.2 is better for those payloads and even then, these are light utes not trucks, it’s really pushing the limits of braking and static and dynamic loads, safety etc. I have said this many times, buy the base model DC SR XLs, 4wd, same engines, same trans, upgrade the seats with Stratos, a real seat driver and passenger, choose ya suspension, Fulcrum, BP52s, etc save the extra money and get real upgrades and at a much lower cost, ya paying for the stickers and magpie shiny things, it’s the Mac Donald’s method of up selling and consumers get sucked in by it.

Hilux is an underpowered piece of crap that costs the same amount. It's miles worse inside and less reliable which is saying alot. This is from an owner of a Ranger 2.0, 3.2 and Hilux 2.8. I wish I never let go of the 3.2 Ranger it was so far ahead of the rest it annoys me.

What were they thinking with those side steps? I don't think I've ever seen a worse design for an off road focussed vehicle, those steps will get hung up on everything

Grille, tyres and switch panel are the only interesting parts on this Ranger. The rest is rubbish . . .
