It's a good starting point, but it would be interesting if they unbolted the complete IRS (since they designed the mounts to allow that) and weighed the final result.

the rear diff and leaf springs you took out of the ranger are unsprung weight. because the irs components bolt directly to the frame, those components are sprung weight. that moves the center of gravity towards the rear of the truck.

the stock diff and springs gave the truck a high roll center in the rear. irs puts the roll center much lower by design.

Intersting. I know the late 90s cobra irs were plauged by wheel hop. Occasionally grenading the rear end gears due to shaking from the tires bouncing up and down on a hard launch. I personally witnessed this at Ennis, Tx. With a stock supercharged 98 cobra. Wheel hop and broke the gears. All in seconds.

Guys, you missed a couple steps. A HUGE advantage of IRS vs solid axle is sprung weight. The weight of the axle has to rebound from bumps along with the wheels and tires, which the IRS avoids because the weight of the differential is suspended from the body having no affect on sprung weight. Also, threaded sway bar end links are only used to adjust “preload” for circle track. Anyone on a road course or autocross would use them to remove preload and make the sway bar neutral at ride height.

@@youtubeisbroken241 I'm gonna have to agree. It's not that I'm a Chevy guy, but the Ford setups for alot of cars and trucks are damn near one offs and it's hard to find parts or aftermarket items from a company that deals in 1 to 1 1/2 year breaks. I prefer Chevy swaps because of the cost and nothing but the cost. Ford swaps are just too damn expensive and I actually like my family being able to eat. This setup is really gonna be shock dependent. If you miss the mark on shocks, this thing is gonna skate rather than track straight. I'm interested with what they are going to do with shocks away bars.

You guys have / had full control to mount the cradle in any fashion you desired, but didn't mention if you added "Anti-Squat" angle into the mounting and welding... which would be about 2 to 3 degrees of what would look like caster.. plus, street driving will ride much better, on oddity's in the road ways... just saying... or maybe you guys did ,and just didn't mention it...??? either way, still fun brought back allot of memories.. more over, these IRS installed in my 85 Thunderbird turbo coupe...

@pegalis
@pegalis 4 жыл бұрын
Pro-2 and Pro-4 ... not to mention trophy trucks use solid rear axles with a very low anti-squat ratio on the suspension setup. On a ladder frame truck, stick with a solid axle. IRS suspensions from production vehicles lack the suspension travel and suspension geometry for the levels of performance you're looking for. If you want to go IRS, get a 9" IRS center chunk and fabricate the suspension as needed for your application, wheelbase and akerman angle. There is A LOT more to making a offroad worthy IRS suspension then just bolting stuff on.
