Blimey, didn’t know Mitsubishi were leaving the Uk? I believe a new Ranger is due out next year and it will share the same platform as the new VW Amarok so that will be interesting!

@@CaravanChitChat leaving the UK this year. Have said they’ll continue support and servicing etc through a network of dealers (I’m assuming past Mitsubishi dealers) but that’s it, no more Mitsubishi here. I was surprised when I heard.

Hey mate. Yes I do try and drive with MPG in mind. On the trip to Devon it did 25mpg towing. I must admit I find some of the things on the screen a bit fiddly, like the climate controls, I just can’t seem to get it right, it’s either too cold or too hot!

Ahh thanks Steve. The last bit was completely unplanned as normal. Can’t beat a bit of improvisation 🤣 at first it’s a bit daunting parking it but you quickly get used to the size. It helps with the reverse camera and sensors front and rear. It overhangs a supermarket car park slightly

We have to say that there are a few ‘chewbers we’d like to meet up with and that we think we’d click with and you two are certainly in that group! Hi! So sorry about the delay in responding, this comment escaped us somehow! Erm, no I don’t believe so, I checked with our insurance and it’s no problem at all. I guess it may not be the case for every policy. I did hear about them being bouncy if the back is empty but we’ve not found that to be honest. It’s a great tow car 👍

I don't think it would affect your insurance, but It may affect the warranty of the caravan. This is because commercial vehicles have harder suspension which could damage the tow hitch/drawbar of the caravan, there is a paragraph in the caravan manual about it, however I tow with a ranger and have never had a problem.

Yes mate absolutely nothing to worry about comfort wise. Everyone who gets in are taken aback by the comfort. As for the language thing, I cannot say anything, I’m from Suffolk and we don’t talk proper as it is bouy 🤣🤣🤣

Good question. This appears to be a massive grey area, with what is meant by “drop plate” rather ambiguous. I’ve read that the drop plates in question are the ladder type with the pins to adjust the height. I am very comfortable in the thick 13mm laser cut steel drop plate being secure and not causing any safety issue, along with the use of the correct size bolts and the whole set up being checked for wheel nut torque on a regular basis. The car can tow way more than what my caravan weighs and tows the van safely and securely. I’d much rather have my set up than tow with a car that is close to 100% match. I’d much rather this than have the caravan being towed nose up. This being said, I do understand that it is very grey and I would make your own mind up on which way to go rather than what I do, this is not advice at all, just to clarify! Hope that helps!

@@CaravanChitChat Thanks for the reply. My concern is the Insurance liability, God Forbid a potential accident with the caravan becoming detached or the car involved in an accident. What I understand is that if the drop plate is not type tested with the tow bar by the tow bar provider, then it is not compatible. Insurance companies will pick on the slightest detail to avoid pay outs. Conversely they may also be picky if the height of the tow ball is not correct. I’m going with the van being slightly nose up and relying on the commercial vehicle 4 x 4 off road aspect of the regulations. PS I’ve now got my Wildtrak and a hell of a vehicle it is as well.

Hey James. Yes it’s an awesome piece of kit! I was aware of the drop plate issue, but my research tells me that it only applies to passenger cars and not commercial vehicles, the Ranger of course is classed as a commercial (well, all apart from the raptor) so therefore it doesn’t apply. It’s a very valid point though that people should check

@@CaravanChitChat You may want to carry out a bit more research. If you tow with a commercial vehicle including pick ups, the use of drop plates unless they are type approced are illegal after 2014 by a Euro directive. Drop plates have to be approved by the manufacturer of the towbar because they extend the cantilever length of the towbar itself, thereby increasing the bending moment and hence material stresses when the trailer is hitched. Where permitted, the manufacturer will specify the maximum allowable thickness of the drop plate (usually 15mm). I carried out some extensive research a couple of years ago and again for you today. 4x4AT do a replacement towbar for the Ranger for £184.86 which is lower and I'm sure there are other towbar manufacturers that can also provide a solution. I didn't bother in the end in changing mine. The caravan might sit a bit higher than the caravan manufacture recommends, but it's never caused me any bother. If I was to use a drop plate though, I would definitely only use one that you can use 4 x bolts to fix the tow ball to the vehicle, which you can't with the ford item.
