Rest in peace, Hugh Downs! I wonder what were his secrets to making it to age 99, and I wonder how many of the other people in this commercial are still alive. It's amazing that he was in his 50s in 1973, yet was still alive earlier this year. Hugh Downs entered college in 1939, served in World War II, and anchored the TV news in the very earliest days of TV. That was quite a 99-year period to be alive!

My first car. an 11 year old (bought it in 1986) 1975 Ford Torino 4 door, red with black interior and black vinyl roof.. Best looking 4 doors around IMO. Loved that car. Owned it until it was yard decoration in 1999.

Your revolution is over. Condolences. The bums lost. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me? The bums will always lose!

The family truckster when I was a kid was the "midsize" Torino station wagon, which in reality wasn't that much smaller than the full sized LTD wagon, it was a behemoth.

"Front seat passengers should be able to cross their legs." That is awesome and era-specific. Hugh Downs shilling for Ford makes me want to buy one. Hugh was the man. He hosted the ABC show, 20/20 thru the eighties.

The Torino wagons are extremely rare. I had an LTD wagon and the Torino wagons didnt sell nearly as well. Beautiful color though.

@@klwthe3rd Yes, Torino wagons are rare and even more rare are Gran Torino Squire wagons. During the 70's there seemed to be plenty around, and if you included the Montego wagons..more! But yes, Ford sold maybe twice as many LTD and Country Squire wagons..and thanks to Cash for Clunkers, the last of those ended up scrapped to the crusher/shredder :(

My parents had the Mercury Montego version of this car in Brown. It had the 351 was was stupid fast in the early 80s compared to what was new then. Had a SOFA of a back seat too.

I had two '74 Gran Torinos - a regular sedan in maize with a black interior and 302 and a Brougham sedan in brown all the way around with a 400. My first new car was a yellow with brown vinyl roof '72. The Brougham was the last one of the three, only issue was that the 400 was a terrible gas hog compared to the 302. I would love to have another one some day.

I had a ‘74 Gran Torino sport coupe and it ran great... best part was sitting in a long line into a football game on a sunny hot day... other cars that were later models started to over heat, but my Torino held up like a champ... not bad for a big engined, big-sized, older car!

At the time this car was made, Ford two sedans, the LTD and the Lincoln Continental that were both bigger than this car. They also made the made the Granada and Maverick which were smaller than the Torino. I don't their last sedan the Fusion was as large as their smallest sedan then.

@japanwatchconnection You can say that again. After owning 2 excellent Mitsubishi's decided to go back to Ford (I owned a new '73 Pinto Squire wagon. Never had an issue with it). To make a long story short. I bought a new Escort wagon on 6.12.95. In less than 20,000 miles, I had replaced the automatic trans. Replaced the front struts (had been installed wrong at the factory). Had to get two new front tires as well. Paint started to peel and last but not lease the pwr door locks were possessed. Would lock/unlock on their own. Got locked out a couple of times with that electronic glitch. So.... On 12.08.96 I traded the Escort for a Honda Civic. Keep the Honda for 11 yrs. Had 172K carefree miles on it. In 2007, I bought a new Honda Fit. After 14 years and 241K on it, it drives like a dream, still gets 30-40 mpg. The only thing I've replace has been the clutch (at 216K miles). Everything else on the car is original. E V E R Y T H I N G!!!
