This explains so much! My 2020 Expedition (build date 09/27/20) was in the dealer twice with P0088 at 2000 miles. Second visit was over 2 months long from 12/20 - 02/21. Ultimately a long block was installed. Ford kept sending them the wrong phasers. The dealer could never get the correct parts and asked to call corporate. I suspect my late build 2020 has the 2021+ designed engine install.

Thank you for releasing this video. My '18 Expedition was left at the dealership for the startup rattle issue. I previously had my phasers replaced at ~36k miles, and now at ~77k miles the rattle is back. Looking back at my RO for the first phaser replacement, the dealership used the HL3Z part#. Once my dealership confirms they need to replace the phasers I will definitely make sure they use the ML3Z part# you provided. Also, the extended phaser warranty expired 1/1/2023. I was lucky enough to get in on 12/30/2022. Hopefully the new phasers last until we're done with our Expedition, lol (large family).

They used the H series phasers in the first job at 65000 KM and M series at 82000 KM. My truck made phaser noise on deceleration while the engine was still cold. Once warmed up no deceleration ratcheting noise.

FordTechMakuloco just hooked me up with a timing chain & associated components replacement. Plugs, cooling system flush, and a rear differential service. Services worth the money. Cheaper to be proactive than reactive. Definitely cheaper than a new truck. Oh, I think he fixed my front driver side seat as a courtesy; I remember it having a slight forward/ backward. Couldn’t figure out what was different until about 2-3hrs later I realized I wasn’t moving during acceleration/ braking. Thanks BSG!!! P.S.- Another thing that no longer present is the cold start rattle!!! Had gotten so used to it that I had kinda blocked it out. Super early this morning, around 1am, I went outside to pay special attention to it upon initial startup. Just as I suspected after watching this video and seeing the same service completed on my truck the issue was no longer present. I just fell back in love with my truck again.

Eco be damned! I'm glad for this advice since the mechanics I've been happy with for decades said replacing the cam phasers would be around $1,500. My 2018 F-150 with 91,000 miles recently has the rattle on start up. The problem as I understand it from other U Tube mechanics is the lack of oil getting to the phasers on startup. The press the gas pedal to the floor for a few seconds on start-up to get oil to the phasers is working for me right now. No more rattling causing damage from lack of lubrication. Replacing with the correct parts without fixing the oil flow problem doesn't make sense to me. Getting a regular V8 and paying for lower gas mileage is starting to make sense compared to all these expensive repairs. If someone complains more CO2 would be released without the Ecoboost, we must factor in the pollution emitted by all the new parts being manufactured. I worked for industry reducing their pollution that saved them money under 1990's regulations. I never dreamed Ford would be this incompetent when I bought my first American made vehicle in 40 years.

Well, I had a funny noise coming from the engine on startup a year and a half ago. The tech determined it was the Phaser recall and performed it. 4 days ago, I had a loud cold startup noise. Sounded like a phaser. On my way to Ford the noise started getting louder at 1500rpms, not just at cold startup. They diagnosed it as the cam phaser issue. They sent me an email to approve the $4,500 job to replace them. I'm at 101,000 miles on my 2018 f150 3.5 eco. They did the job at 77k. I'm heading down there to talk with them about the parts they added when they did the recall. I doubt I have any ground to stand on, but this is a recurring $4,500 issue that it appears is part of the plan for Ford to recoup some recall costs. Update: After sitting at ford and looking at my records of service, this will be my 3rd(confirmed) Cam Phaser replacement. 1 at 70k (old HLZ part), one at 81k(MLZ part) and this one at 101k (new part number approved in May 2023). The second round used the part numbers in this video and lasted almost exactly 20k miles. The tech is going to send me a picture of the cam phaser part that was installed to confirm that what is on the truck is in fact the newer MLZ part number. He mentioned if it is the new MLZ part number, that it's the first of those that he's seen fail. Which if true, speaks volumes about that parts resilience.

Another update. The $4500 did not include anything else, guides, tensioners, vct etc. Added that to the list and it's now $6,000. One more item to note: If Ford replaces parts under warranty or tsb, it's a 1 year warranty. If YOU pay for it, it's a 2 year warranty. Also, I spoke with a manager to see if anything can be done about the price. It's worth a shot, but haven't heard back yet on options there. Ultimately, any engine work on the 250's especially 6.7's is probably a lot more. So I guess I have that going for me...Here's the TSB for the cam phasers in case anyone is interested. It ended 1/1/23 though: static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10199482-0001.pdf

I had mine done last year(under warranty)at 95,952 and my invoice is showing they used the old style (HL3Z) cams. At the time, they said the timing chain/guides were not in need of replacement. If you were in my situation, when would you be preventatively seeking to go back into the motor for a tear down to check timing components? Any other advice? Thanks for all you do

Hey Brian, I’ve got a 2019 Raptor with 34k on it. Had zero issues and no phaser noise. Do you think I should preemptively have the phasers replaced now? I hate to fix something that ain’t broken (yet?). Your thoughts would be appreciated.

So I literally just got my 2020 F150 3.5L ecoboost Platinum back from the dealership two days ago for the cam phaser job...thru Ford's extended warranty. Before the job, we had a 20 minute discussion where I told them repeatedly, that I wanted the new cam phasers installed that are in this video... They agreed to do it. First off they had my truck for 2 weeks...even though it was scheduled formthe first day. No biggie. But when I got it back, when I looked at the paperwork, it showed the old phasers--HL3Z. When I brought this to the Service adviser's and the tech's attention, they acknowledged they did not install the ML3Z version... But that they did install the newer HL3Z cam phasers, that supposedly have an "anti-rattle clip". They said they had to because Ford wouldn't cover the warranty job if the paperwork showed ML3Z phasers. They said they could tear the engine back down and replace the cam phasers with the ML3Z ones, but that if the ML3Z phasers blow the engine or if the cam phasers just fail, then when they had to send the cam phasers back to Ford for the warranty, the claim would get denied and I would likely be left with a blown engine and the costs associated with it would be mine alone. Their concern was the new updated cam phasers in this video could potentially not be exactly as the old set and it could throw the timing off, causing catastrophic failure. 2 questions: 1. Would the Ford extended warranty still cover my engine if it blew up, after using the ML3Z cam phasers? 2. Are the new style cam phasers, ML3Z, legit? Are they the exact same specs as the HL3Z (meaning the same amount of sprocket teeth and distance between each tooth...etc)? Do you still use the same timing chain for ML3Z as was used for the original timing chain for the HL3Z? If somehow you get this, even though it's a year later, and you do actually reply, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!

I had my '18 F-150 3.5eb phasers replaced back in October of 2020 for the cold start rattle at just over 53,000 miles and they said they had the updated parts installed at the time. The repair took 8 days and then upon getting my vehicle back I made it less than three miles from the dealership in Omaha before black smoke was billowing from under my truck and people were pointing at me. I immediately took it back and they had it another day and replaced all of the gaskets and seals. I had a constant whistle sound at idle after that and they said it was normal and bring it back if it gets worse since there was no diagnostic code that popped up. Now, I once again need the cam phasers replaced at 99,000 miles and its outside of warranty. I was looking at my repair invoice and the part numbers say HL3Z-6256-CD and HL3Z-6C525-CD. Talked to my service advisor the other day and he said that it's the updated cam phasers that were installed and that it can have the same part number as before but it's actually the updated phasers and his tech would not be installing the old versions. Is this correct or is my service advisor not being honest with me? Anyone having issues with the new phasers. I've had other warranty work done on other parts of the vehicle and each time I've had to come back. They once forgot to put the mounting bolts back in on my brake caliper and I made three blocks. Had a transmission flush done recently since they said they don't need to replace the filter. Replaced the trans pan and filter about 400 hundred miles later and the fluid was brown. While i was under there I noticed two of the transfer case to transmission mounting bolts were sticking out from when they replaced my transfer case when I had only a couple hundred miles on the truck. Apparently to difficult to get to so no need to tighten. SMH. Planning on going somewhere else now instead of the dealer where I bought the truck since my extended warranty expired. Sorry for venting but my blood's been boiling the last few days.

I have had my timing chain and phasers replaced twice. I told the dealer that I use Mobile 1 full synthetic oil and told them to use it. They did, but at the first oil change after the work, I got an extra 4 quarts of oil out of it. They never drained the old oil out. Service advisor told me it would not hurt the engine. I did not believe him. Two weeks later my oil pan leaked and they put a new one on. 5k miles later I had timing chain rattle at startup. Dirty oil messed up the phasers. They did the whole replacement again. After that I started getting heating problems when in the turbos. New water pump, thermostat, then radiator. Still not right. Frustrated with the service.

Hey Brian, on a friend's 20 f150 with the 10speed tranny, there's a mild grinding metal sound while idling and on acceleration on take off. I figured it was due to the noisy fluid pump on the newer 10speed but while driving, it feels like when the clutch slips (when you make a bad shift but not jerky) on a manual tranny, so I'm kinda thinking it might be a internal bushing or something else. Last dealership he took it to said they could hear or find anything but I mean it's definitely noticeable now.

This video is very helpful and very well done - thank you! I have a 2017 F150 with around 90,000 miles and I’m getting ready to have the CAM phasers done - again - because the dealership used the original designed parts for the job and they are failing again (loud noise on cold starts). I’ve also had the IWE issue and both front sides replaced and a starter replaced. Are there any other common issues i should be keeping in mind with the 2017 3.5 F150? I also have the heavy tow package. My Ford warranty is about to expire and I’m trying to decide if I should buy an extended ford warranty. Would love your thoughts

Another great and informative video Brian. I am a long time subscriber and have relied upon your advise to keep my 2007 Eddie Bauer Expedition 5.4 running trouble free. My daughter now has it and at 220,000 miles it is still running good. I now have a 2019 Expedition Limited with the 3.5 Ecoboost. Just hit 50,000 miles and have again followed your advise, changing the oil every 5000 miles. No phaser rattle yet, but am now very concerned. Is there any preventive measures that can prolong the life of these phasers, or are they destined to fail?

@FordTechMakuloco Quick question for you... Almost a month ago to this day, replaced the phasers (with the latest part numbers), chains, guides, etc on a 2018 ecoboost. Customer called today mentioning that their "grinding noise on startup" has returned. At this point I'm planning to inspect the exhaust studs to make sure that they are all there and I considered looking at the turbos, but they were quiet and operational during the prior test drive. Any suggestions or issues you've seen? Truck has 120k and I don't really plan to tear the engine down again to replace what was replaced to begin with. Maybe oil pressure issue? Not looking for any type of solution, just maybe you've seen or had similar concerns? Thank you!

F-150's in general seem to have phaser and timing chain issues over the years. I had a 2010 5.4 which was notorious for the tensioner, as I learned from all your videos (Thank you!) And now you're doing videos of the ecoboosts having timing and start rattle issues. I sold the 2010 and got a '21 with the Cayote 5.0. I changed the oil already at 2k, 5k, and 10k, and plan on every 5k from now on. My question is this: has the 5.0 also shown long term issues with timing components, or has this problem shifted mostly from the old tritons to the 3.5's? Do you think regular oil changes will keep those components clean enough to prevent such a big timing job for a very long time, or has Ford just continued to not learn their lesson with oil starvation across all engines? Thanks for your channel! I've been a subscriber ever since I bought that 2010 all those years ago, and knew to listen for the cold start rattle (which is when I decided to move on :D)
