I started golfing late on and have been drowning in a million KZfaq videos and getting worse for 2 years now. Like most here I've been trying to keep the club square on the backswing and to compound it, also trying to time wrist movements in the hitting area. Went to the driving range today and just let the forearm rotation happen on the backswing and was amazed by the results. It's counter-intuitive, the more I allowed the forearm rotation the more distance and accuracy I had with my irons. I was just using the body rotation to uncoil and rotate the club back into position on the downswing. Exactly like you said, my lead arm has been collapsing with a horrible over swing. Why isn't this more widely taught :)

Thank you for such a great explanation. Allowing the forearms to roll was so key to a better result for me. I was trying to force holding club at impact and not allow the forearms to roll…I was less consistent and certainly had less distance. At first it seems scary to let it roll but it’s so much better. An impact ball with colors on each side is a great aid that I use. Simply swing the club with the ball and it gives that instant feedback and you can feel your forearms have to roll to keep a swing going.

God bless you for speaking truth to power! First golf KZfaq coach to NOT flat lie about the body, forearm, wrist match up needed to get the face rotating around the hosel, which actually stabilizes the clubface. Golf coaches everywhere are cringing mad at you for revealing this secret.

Kerrod! Thank you for this! The idea that the forearms/club need to rotate in the through swing may be an obvious fundamental to some, but it wasn't to me. I was doing exactly what you pointed out - watching pros/videos and trying to hold the face open/square through impact. It was a ton of strain on my body and lots of muscle power only to get "meh" results. I could hit a good shot here and there but nothing consistent. Working on this feeling of letting the club turn over feels so natural and easy now, I can't believe I was swinging any other way. It hasn't been a magic fix, but my distance is up 10-15 or so yards per club and more importantly the amount of EFFORT required is way down. THANK YOU!

Forearm rotation in the backswing works great for me and has helped my game. I get soo confused tho because I feel like 50% of teachers/videos say to do this and the other 50% say don’t and that you are inadvertently opening the face.

I liked how at the end of the video you mentioned releasing the tension out of your body. I find that a good waggle with a light grip with a consistent pressure and relaxing my shoulders helps to make it easy to rotate the forearms. I also make a conscious effort to breathe out just before I start the take away. It's amazing how much more swing speed is generated with a relaxed swing that allows the forearms to rotate back and through. Effortless power!

This is good. And the definition of a functional grip is very contingent on a players wrist angles. In my experience the vast majority of people will find a stronger grip will allow for a little more extended lead wrist will help manage CLUBFACE better. So much talk about closing the CLUBFACE on the downswing seems a bit backwards.

I go back n forth between these 2 methods…. Whenever I swing with the clubface somewhat square to the arc, I’ll just cock the wrists BACK, and basically hit the ball with my body turn. This puts the right wrist cocked straight back, and bows the left wrist. This swing feels very restricted, and it feels like it takes a lot of effort to hit the ball a decent distance. My strike also suffers a little bit. However, my direction is very predictable. On the contrary, allowing the forearms to naturally roll feels very effortless, and free. Strike is much more crisp, and consistent, and distance feels effortless. However, the direction of the ball almost feels like a surprise. I have no feel of where the face is during my swing. The pros are almost obligated to roll the forearms, because they need the extra distance, and perfect strike. But, that’s also why you see them spray the ball from time to time. I can swing the club somewhat square to the arc without it looking as bad as he demonstrated, but it definitely feels more restrained.

great description: since I started playing golf, I have always wondered about the position of the clubface at the top, and I always felt when I did it correctly, it felt open. I wonder how many others have had this feeling? while I know you are right, I still lapse into the closed position at times, and do not realize it! I have been golfing for 60 years!
@jamiesloan7259

I played like this for years. I would purposely try to keep the face pointing at the ball, throughout my backswing. This always felt very “restrictive”, and it actually made me very closed at the top. I’ve recently started allowing my forearms to roll naturally. The butt of the club at the ball/target line is a great way to feel it. This puts the logo of my glove more pointing slightly towards the sky(at the top). This felt extremely open to me at first. However, the results have been amazing. I don’t try to force the club face closed, on my downswing. I just let my forearms rotate naturally through impact. Uhhh…. I shot 2 under yesterday, with one of the best ball striking days I’ve ever had to be honest. My swing feels so free, and effortless now. This natural move does so many good things. It puts the club on its natural plane. It makes you forget about trying to manipulate the face, with your hands. And, it allows you to get through the ball, with ease. You won’t even feel your divot, and the compression is next level. You’ll also have a full, extended finish. It has changed my ball striking, and consistency to the next level. You gotta do this move. Trust me.

Hi Kerrod Hello from the UK, Please could you tell me what do you need to do to keep the clubhead matching your spine angle and rotate your forearms? when I do it I fan the club into a wide open position even though I am turning at the same time. Do you roll your forearms half way back? Ps Great Videos

I’ve heard that the rolling of the forearms is at the last 20% of the backswing, allowing your right palm pointing straight up the sky at the end of the backswing .

My issue is violent rotation and how to slow it down so the severe rotation occurs later in the golf swing. It's mostly with the driver where I am now getting duck hooks. There must be a moderate way to control the forearm roll. My iron play is pretty solid but my miss is a left pull.

Hi Kerrod. I’m new to the channel and absolutely loving the content. Question on the rotation of the lead forearm. I know that the forearm can rotate independent of the upper arm/shoulder. However, in the takeaway portion of the backswing, is it the forearm that pronates/rotates to P1 or just a slight pronation of the whole arm? Not sure if that makes sense or not.

"Square to the target; square to the ball" is a misunderstanding of the alternative to rotating the forearms. In fact, if you try to keep the club face pointing at the ball, it will require forearm rotation. The correct concept is *"Square to Path",* which is the only outcome of _not_ rotating the forearms, and is actually the simplest way to swing.

For me its icredibly hard to find out what really happens in a good golf swing. I repeated the exercise starting at 1:37 and for me it seems that the hand rotation (180°) comes from rotation of the arms in the shoulder sockets to an amount of about 90° and pure forearm rotation to an amount of likewise 90°. Does anybody agree and does this also happen in a golf swing?

@@dennisconnelll1914 You may just have an overly strong ('hooker's) grip, resulting in the face arriving at impact closed to target AND to path. You could also be overdoing the forearm rotation, but there are a few other faults that could account for the problem. Get your local pro to check you out ...
