Since you guys are in Johor, head on to Batu Pahat, the city of Kerepek (chips). They even have lots of small scale factories owned and operated by the locals and they even sell their chips straight out of the warehouse like Azhar Food and Salim Food. And don’t forget to get your hands on Nasi Ambeng, Mee Racun, Lontong Kering, Murtabak, Mee Bandung, Laksa Johor (made with spaghetti).

"Pulled tea" or teh tarik is actually a method of reducing the temperature of the tea from boiling (undrinkable) to hot but drinkable. Putting an ice cube dilutes the flavour of the tea whereas simply by "pulling" retains it. Sometimes evaporated milk (susu cair) is added (although in very small amounts) on top of the condensed milk (susu manis) for more foam (or taste?) therefore changes the taste a little bit but in general more well liked. It is pulled 2 to 3 times depending on length of pull and temperature of water but usually after 3 times of a long pull, the drink is no longer hot to most people's liking. That is why kopi tarik, milo tarik, nescafe tarik etc exist as well. Nowadays, "tarik" is more commercialized so you have cool/icy drinks with "tarik" on it and a distinct flavour associated with it.

Yup, keju is from the Portuguese word "Quejio". The Portuguese introduced cheese and butter when they conquered Malacca in 1511. They also introduced "Pão de Lô" or "Bolo" (Portuguese sponge cake) during that 130-year rule. Malays call it Bahulu. Another food that the Portuguese introduced was Kaya or egg jam. The difference is we use pandan instead of vanilla, as well as coconut milk. Another Portuguese sweet that has been part of our cuisine, as well as Thai is the "Fios de Ovos" or Jala Mas in Malay.

@@JetLagWarriors Poor little Steve, scarred for life, I imagined you as the only kid eating raw spaghettis during lunch break. I remember some kids on the block used to skip lunch just to get back to the parking lot and play and they'd whip some fast food while their mom would call them back to eat real food and it was crazy: fat or salt on a slice of bread. I never understood them until now.

What a great selection of snacks. Milo is a great invention 😂 Teh tarik technique is to cool down the boiling tea which is a technique generally used in India for tea or coffee. In Malaysia Mamak - is generally known for Malaysian Indians who are Muslims have been slowly associated with the Indian food they sell, like roti canai/paratta, curries, teh tarik, etc. - all the good stuff. 😊

You guys gotta buy the big carton of chrysanthemum tea and chill it. Pop it out on a hot day and it'll put a big smile on your face 😊

I think the more accurate word for Malaysian 'kuih' is sweets or desserts. Please do enjoy more of them if you got the chance.

What a great experience trying our Malaysian snacks and drinks. Yeah, Super Rings is the best, our ex- Prime Minister's favourite. "Popo" is actually a Chinese word which means granny. Anyway, good review and most of those snacks are actually unhealthy food. Hahaha ...."Chrysanthemum" ... a long word and most people can't get the correct spelling of it 😂😅

Actually cheezle is the first that launch the product second came super ring either of this company didn't fake each other cheezle more older generation snack when i was young in 80s super ring is more toward younger generation that my young sister like it the different is one salty one is sweet, n mamee when first time they launch it can be boil it or eat it on the spot, now days younger generation like to it on the spot, but if u want to cook it also can only old generation cook but nowdays it rare to see the mamee use for cook only mamee noodles products were use for cook😊
