Well tecnically is from the late roman period when a lot of barbarian were enlisted in the roman army

@@federicocappellini3241 The origins of the sword lie with the Celts who were far from barbarians. The Romans adopted the blade for cavalry use first and later auxilia units would use them. Since the 3rd century AD the gladius would be slowly replaced by the spatha

The Romans fought in a manner much closer to the barbarians than is commonly recognized. They prized individual valour and prowess and had to institute draconian discipline just to keep their overly keen lads in line.

Honestly, they shouldn't have Doug be directed on where to cut. He's the expert, just let him attack in whatever necessary area there is so testing is fair, and most importantly - let him cut properly. I get that the flashy stuff is cool for the show, but it also sometimes throws edge alignment off.

I like how there’s protocol and words like “step down” so they can safely approach and relieve him of the blade. I guess people can get into a blind rage ? Or just to make sure he’s done swinging so no one gets done to them what was done to the ballistics gel dummy

To be honest, it is not that surprising. It's a show that is there for entertainment. So the director says what he thinks is looking the most flashy and fancy. Often he spins or does unnecessary or wrong movements. It's a show and not a scientific study. A blunt steel bar can kill and a sharpend bar of steel can also cut most stuff so really no need for ballistic geldummies. But to be fair, I like this show because it's entertaining and nice to watch.

"I think I'm going to throw up". Seeing this it makes you think how horrible battle must have been back then and it makes you think how awful it must have been for the poor souls who met their fate at the end of a sword and for those who suffered terrible injuries and survived but it must have been unimaginable fighting on the battle grounds (& attacking civilian populations) if this demonstration is anything to go by.
