It seems to be a common thing on this show. Honestly the hosts are respectful to the smiths. I haven't watched a lot for yrs but seen quite a few lately, obvious reasons. I like that I don't see a clear agenda from hosts and no one trying to grandstand for the camera.

I just like that it just seems genuine. They don't create situations to create or stage conflict. I am certainly not a Smith by trade but it looks like it's real work. The contestants bust their butts to make the best blades they can which ultimately is what the show is about, and the host treat them as such. It's almost like the real world with well functioning adults lol. We can all hope at least.

I don't know why even I bother to give this info but somehow I wanted to. Yatagan is a curved type sword used by ottoman elite shock troops aka, the janissaries. The most noticeable thing on it that it's inward sharp and never double-sided. There are a few reasons for that; The first reason is that like in greek kopis, the inward sharpened blades are transferring at least %40-50 percent of more force in one side on vertical or attacks from upward. The reason is the by leaving one side blunt, the ottoman blacksmiths have discovered that they can make a heavier but at the same time, more balanced weapons. Chemically, yatagans blunt side was made usually of iron in order to gain flexibility and the edge was made of high-quality carbon steel to absorb the impact. Another trick is its weight ratio. This blade allowed janissaries to eliminate armored European knights in close combats. Janissaries were not as much as armored as knights but their brutish training from very early ages allowed them to precisely using this weapon along with many other gunpowder guns. On the other hand, knights had a full plate, good trained and very well protected, most knights were not using a gorget(small piece of plate in order to protect neck and collarbones sometimes) in order to look around freely. Their helm was usually closed and their sight was fairly limited in close quarters except for their devastating cavalry charge, which not required any sight. So the gaps around the neck trapezius area were mostly allowed janissaries to strike a lethal blow to chainmail and this kind of blow was usually fatal. In the 15th era, a pain of yatagan was called ``head scissors`` in Europe after some catastrophic events. (etc. battle of Mohacs, the battle of Kosovo 1448). Secondly, yatagans are more than swords. In Turkish culture, its at least important as what katana was for the samurai. It was used by a lot of people just because of their artistic beauty and its ears. (usually pummels has quotes from the holy Quran etc). In a street fight, it was a custom to use the blunted side for the stronger opponent to balance the odds. Regards

note that Yataghan was used against heavily armoured european cavarly and infantries, and Turkish light infantries equipped with yataghans absolutely obliterated them, average infantryman could deliver insane amount of damage to heavy armor with Yataghan. after the disasters in Kosovo and Nicopolis, europeans called it hand scissor, since Jannisarries used 2 Yataghans at the same time, like japanese samurais.

Some corrections to history diatribes and fantasy tales posted in the comments. The fantasy stories about yatagans were fabricated later then transported in the past. Battle of Kosovo was in 1389, Battle of Nicopolis in 1396, second Battle of Kosovo was in 1448. That was late 14th century and mid-15th century. But yatagans were used by the Ottoman Turks about TWO centuries later, from the mid-16th century (mid-1500s) up to late-19th century. They could only be used (and most like were not) during the Battle of Mohacs in 1526. The fantasy stories about yatagans were fabricated much later, then transported back in the past when the weapon did not exist.

I say as a Turk, the feature of this sword is that it can maneuver quickly and is very durable. In particular, it enabled the Yeni Cheri Turkish warriors to do wonders in battle.

It's the main weapon of the Janissar elite warriors of the Osmanic Empire, based of the design of the ancient greek kopis sword that the Turks improved. The Ottomans used them in their military campaigns to great effect, these blades do some serious damage, they're like butcher cleavers but super light and durable. They were later adopted by the other people of the Balkans, who were under Osmanic rule like Serbs,Greeks,Albanians,Bulgars etc. and were still in use during the Balkan Wars of the early 20th century.
