Pine nuts are so expensive though and hard to find. Hemp seeds or sliced almonds would be a good substitute for pine nuts if you cannot find them or can’t afford them.
@RainbowPlantLife2 жыл бұрын
Some folks have used toasted walnuts with good results too! I am not sure if sliced almonds would be the best option unless soaked ahead of time, since they’re quite hard compared to pine nuts or walnuts.
@elisa62122 жыл бұрын
Cashews and pecans are better substitutes I think, both in consistency and flavour (buttery and sweet). Walnuts are too bitter, the flavour would be very different. Still good if that's what you like though. Almonds are too hard, you could use almond butter though!
@suzq27442 жыл бұрын
@@elisa6212 the sliced almonds aren’t really that hard because they are so thin but I really like hemp seeds. The chewy texture and buttery flavor of hemp seeds are closer to pine nuts in my opinion than other nuts but people can really use whatever nuts they have on hand. Walnuts would probably be the cheapest out of all the options though
@elisa62122 жыл бұрын
@@suzq2744 No, they're not that hard, but if you pulse them together with everything else they will leave hard bits, they won't be creamy at all. Almond butter would be better I think. The cheapest option depends on where you live... Here almonds are. I must try hemp seeds, I've never seen them before!
@suzq27442 жыл бұрын
@@elisa6212 how do you think almond butter is made? By blending almonds. So if I blend them up I would just be making my own almond butter from scratch. I’ve blended almonds many times, never had a problem

dip: pine nuts, lemon, cannellini beans, white miso, salt, pepper and ice water topping: lemon peel, garlic, whole coriander seeds & whole cumin seeds edit: (and chilli flakes) Aside from maybe white miso and pine nuts, everything is pretty affordable in a lot of places. For everything but those two, I could probably get a lemon, head of garlic, a jar of both coriander seeds and cumin seeds and then a can or two of cannellini beans for like not even $8AUD which would be like $6USD. Can get a 400g thing of white miso for $4AUD/$3USD and this could be more expensive or not available in other places, at least not easily available- but that’s just from a normal supermarket, I’m sure you’d find it f or quite cheap at an Asian grocers. Pine nuts are expensive but have a lot of food value. I haven’t bought pine nuts in many years because of the price. But these can be replaced with cashews or toasted hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, even sunflower seeds. I used to but cannellini beans in bulk until the place I bought them from stopped carrying them in bulk. Something this recipe makes me think of is that long ago hummus was made with cannellini beans or any bean that was available. The reason that garbanzo beans became the go to bean for the hummus recipe is that they were the cheapest bean to get making it easy for many people to be able to make the delicious dish. This looks amazing what you’ve put together here, but I myself would replace the pine nuts with some of the alternatives. I may even get just a few pine nuts to add to the mix, but if I made it often I would have to find another way to make it work. Thanks for the recipe. It does look delicious. I’ll try it my version. Your dishes are always yummy!
