you may not be able to call this series Nick At Nite but you sure can't stop me from doing so

You probably know this, but Forever Knight was originally going to be titled Nick Knight, as it is a series adaption of the TV movie of the same name. However, it originally would have aired in a timeslot adjacent to Nick At Night, so they had to change the name.

It would be one thing if the mystic oriental medicine accompanied mystic occidental medicine, but it almost never is. Which is a shame-partly because I want to see someone try to reconcile several unrelated forms of ancient folk medicine, but mostly because the prevalence of oriental mysticism indicates a widespread ambivalence to all but the most blatant forms of racism.

I'm on the fence here. On one hand - yeah, in the hands of a 90s TV show written by non-Asian writers...almost certainly it's just Orientalist Magic, and probably uncomfortable. On the other - using acupuncture in a broad way from medicinal applications to fighting techniques to literally affecting chi-flow is a MAJOR trope in east-Asian media. I could easily see someone going "Holy shit - you're undead! A being of living Yin principle! If I apply the right needles to your meridians, I *think* I can control some of your most dangerous natures, but if I'm not careful..." If Mao Dao Zhu Shi can have the ghost general controlled by skul-piercer needles, Nick could get acupuncture to minimize his vampiric excesses!

With regard to cherry blossoms: I did some superficial research and learned that plum blossoms seem to have some of the same cultural significance in China as cherry blossoms do in Japan. I don't want to overstate the similarities, but there's enough there that most of the symbolism that Forever Knight might have been going for with the "Cherry Blossom" title probably could have been maintained with plum blossoms. Which, according to my superficial research, also grow in Toronto. Of course, Chinese plum blossoms aren't _nearly_ as well-known to the Anglophone world as Japanese cherry blossoms. And that was probably true in the 90's, too.

I fostered a litter of kittens and was having a hard time finding names that fit. One aloof medium floofy calico, one mildly neurotic slender tabby, and one strong willed muscular always hungry tuxedo. All three females. After a few days it sunk in that they were exactly like Janette, Nicholas, and Lucien (LaCroix), respectively. So I named them that. Their current family changed the last two to Nicki and Lucy.

It's always weird when people use vampires as a stand-in for marginalized groups, because they're so thoroughly an allegory for the predatory, aristocratic upper class. It's _possible_ to reinterpret common vampiric traits (and omit others) to make them an allegory for queer people or whatever, but it doesn't seem worth the effort. There are _so_ many other kinds of legendary creatures that fit the bill _so_ much better. Some of them even have cool magic powers!
@jasonmydreams18
@jasonmydreams18 6 ай бұрын
@timothymclean tbh in my case I liken myself to a vampire because I feel like a parasite that contributes nothing yet takes and takes for his own survival and despite having been born into this world as a human just like any other, I feel alienated from other people. Lesser. I only used the words "come out to" ironically here, as being a vampire is typically considered a bad thing both for the people around the vampire and even for the vampire itself in some cases Also funny pale man go hiss
@jimballard1186
@jimballard1186 6 ай бұрын
@@timothymclean Since vampirism is often portrayed as an infection, I think there's a lot of room to milk vamps as metaphors for people living with a chronic condition; and marginalized people can have such conditions too. Admittedly I haven't seen the media that makes such a metaphor, but I'm saying it *could* be done well.
