Couple quick tips on not leaving any hammer marks behind .... Remove the glove from your hammer hand so that you can feel the pitch and angle of the hammer better. When your at your final shape that you are looking for hammer lightly on your high spots of the knife at a dark orange heat down to a dull red This is what's referred to as a planishing heat. Hope this helps someone out there in your community

6:12 What i always find best when cooling the blade after quench is to leave it suspended vertically in a vise to prevent any warpage that may cause in the oil while it's still cooling. This has happened to me a couple time. Enjoy ylur bladesmithing Dan, its really fun and satisfying

One thing I always used for etching is glass etching cream. Just get a sticky contact paper to make your shape, cut out the design you want, apply, wait 15-30 minutes, wash it off, and you have a nice design etched into the blade that'll never come off

Water actually just dilutes acids, baking soda neutralizes them... just a helpful tip. Sick knife tho, u should make a khukri machete
@holdensmith16285 жыл бұрын
Tyler Keiser only a base of the opposite acidity/baseness will neutralize an acid and the same thing goes for a base such as lye.
@gentlemanviking5665 жыл бұрын
Holden Smith what about dubstep? That’s pretty base heavy
@andrewmarkert11465 жыл бұрын
@@holdensmith1628 Tyler was correct. Baking soda is alkaline, which neutralizes acids. Baseness? Acids and alkalines!

This is gonna sound so pedestrian compared to some of the awesomeness you’ve been creating but I’d like to see you do a good quality Chef’s knife. Maybe a set with a matching butcher’s block and cutting board. You seem to be good at the woodworking aspect, too. I got into cooking recently and my understanding is that a good Chef’s knife has to be well balanced and be able to retain its edge while cutting a multitude of different food stuffs. Maybe a longer term, multi part series where you explore making all the knives in the butcher block. From chef’s knife and santoku to serrated steak knives and meat cleavers.

Hey man. New to the channel, enjoying your content. A quick but important tip. Water does *not* neutralise acid, it dilutes it. Making it less potent, but still dangerous. You need a base, equal(ish) in strength to the acid, to properly neutralise it. Anyways, keep up the good work man. You got a sub.
@Tredok5 жыл бұрын
The knife is great! buuuut water does not neutralize an acid, a base neutralizes an acid or rather both neutralize each other creating water and salt (not exclusively table salt, be careful with that). Since Ferric Acid is not very acidic, baking soda should be enough to neutralize it, just pour it on top, wait a few seconds, rince with water. What you did with soap also helps, since soap is basic, but you need to neutralize the acid or base properly if you are just going to pour it on the sink.

Hey dan. I have some advice for a black coating thats more natural. You get your metal nice and clean, then spray it with vinegar to cause some microscopic dents. Then clean it again, soap and water. After that you use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and salt to make an even layer of red rust. Then you boil the metal to turn the red rust into black rust, magnetite. Its will give the piece the "old blacksmith" look you like. Oh, and use a finishing wax to seal it up
@davidvelasquez41235 жыл бұрын
Oh another thing.... try tridium or that glow in the dark powder for accent style in different handles. That always adds a cool touch to the finish inside epoxy
@Togath4 жыл бұрын
Great work. Awesome forging that bevel by hand. Look Slavic Teley he uses some kind of an electric etch set up for his makers mark that actually goes into the metal. I haven’t researched exactly what he does but you might find that easier for you to do the etching you’re wanting to accomplish.

@diraltmcallister35234 жыл бұрын
The biggest factor for forge welding is making sure you clean your steel. Make sure there's no scaling and no charring or anything and use a lil bit of flux and that should help quite a bit. Heat distribution is another factor, there should be some info somewhere for the proper forge welding temp for tool steel.

I just found the channel. Great work! If I may give a word of advice, the etch may have come out better and deeper if you used salt water etching. Instead of acid, you can use a battery charger and a mix of salt water to get the etch as deep as you like. fantastic result non the less man.

Hey buddy, I've watched a few of your videos, nice to see you growing. Just a heads up, water doesn't neutralize acid. It only dilutes it. I would suggest some windex to neutralize completely. If you want a deeper and cleaner etch dilute you ferric chloride to a 1 to 3 ratio water to ferric chloride. Then etch it for longer. Nice work keep it up!
