_Suggestion:_ 1) Make some damascus steel. 2) Turn it into a knife. 3) Feature your new knife on the next "cooking with Dan" episode.
@smalldoseofmeful5 жыл бұрын
This......... 100 times over.
@Dylanschillin5 жыл бұрын
Been making knives for 6 years, trust me Damascus is hard as fuck to make, you lose a shit load of material due to the flux just eating away at the steel to keep the surface clean and oxidizationfrom regular forging, it's also extremely time consuming with a hand hammer, can be done with a lot of patience and propane and steel, my current Damascus project is a shift knob and i need over 2 lbs of steel to make a couple 60 gram pieces of steel
@dannykyle7385 жыл бұрын
I don't think he is ready for that just yet, eventually that would be great. But it would suck to try and do all the work and it not turn out because of a simple mistake made from not having enough experiance
@KarimFawzy105 жыл бұрын
This is the kind of project he should realistically only do as a collab (do something similar to what he did for the gold AK) if he's gonna do it this early in the game

Hope you clean your sander after every build, ZNA had his catch on fire and nearly burnt his garage down because of the fine steel particles built up
@imsroll5 жыл бұрын
His caught fire because he was using it for both metal and wood... Fine steel particles do not suddenly catch fire lol... Hot steel sparks into a pile of old saw dust = fire.

This suggestion is extremely pertinent to those who delve into working with Titanium. Sparks from the grinder can ignite titanium dust/ shavings quite easily. There is a KZfaqr that does titanium blades for the pocket knives he sells, and has made mention of taking caution when working with titanium, as he has ignited his arms on several occasions from grinding while letting the dust accumulate to much on his arms.

You'll know when tempering is done when the metal goes a golden wheat color. But to get rid of this color be careful, you want to do it by hand with wet sandpaper. If you do It on the belt sander it reverses the tempering. Just thought I might add that in.

Great work on this Dan! Love the shape fr. Also I think a cool idea you can 100% do no problem @DanMade is forge the shape like you did and then forge weld a piece of high carbon steel into the center of the axes “cutting” edge. I’m gonna try it when I move away from stock removal but it would be a great practice to get into forge welding and eventually making Damascus. Just an idea

Hey Dan, cool video. I have another suggestion for a project. What if ya made a Karambit from a wrench? Doesn't hafta be very big, something like 1 inch or so. I have no idea how difficult it could be, but I imagine ya just smooth out the inside of the closed end while making the blade come out of the grip 4-5 inches from the ring. I'd buy it. Just my 2 cents... when you’re working the metal after taking it out of the furnace, you should be able to hold it with those welding gloves you have, makes it a lot easier to maneuver than using the vice grips, that’s what I’ve done in the past. A leather grip on that hatchet would look pretty cool as well

Hey dan how much was it to get a small set up like that. This is wanting me to get into forging. Oh and how about motorcycle chain into a knife I’ve seen a couple videos on that.
@RidingFree5 жыл бұрын
It's surprising how many people skip the normalizing process, and go straight for the quench. Watching you do multiple normalizing cycles, and actually checking the temperature of the oil, to make sure that it's warm for the quench. Kinda makes me think you actually know what you're doing! And I'd just like to see a good 'ol regular hunting or skinning knife. Or you could make an ulu to use with your cooking videos.

@@ryans3194 Dans a motivated man, he could do it, it would just take a little time
@ryans31945 жыл бұрын
Matt it’s not that he couldn’t do it . I am saying he needs more practice before trying it . maybe a couple more pieces and then he should try . Demarcus is not something you want to do right off the bat I mean you could but you might get very frustrated ( possibly enough to quit) however you are right he is motivated so maybe not but he should at lest do say ten pieces just for practice and then try Demarcus. Trust me I have seen so many videos of master smiths giving advice on this and they would say the same thing I am .

I heard you shouldn't forge chrome-vanadium because chrome is a heavy metal, like lead, and produces fumes in the forge and dust from the grinding that are poisonous. If you've survived eating this much lead paint so far, I think one tomahawk wont kill you. I look forward to seeing new forging videos soon!

Hunter Ritchko it’s a simple propane forge with one burner good for knife making but if he wants to do bigger projects like swords he will need a bigger forge. For info on the forge like I said it looks like a one burner propane forge if you search simple propane forge you will see very similar forges.
