If you want a carbon migration line don’t use a Damascus core. The nickel prevents the migration. I’ve made that mistake thinking it would still get some effect from the 1084, but I was wrong.

I've been making SS San-Mai since '07. I build hidden tang knives and always forge down my ricasso and draw out my hidden tang on my power hammer. It's a really good way to ensure your welds are good - by forging laterally AGAINST the welds. If there's any delamination at that point the billet needs to be scrapped. In 14 years now, I've failed once.
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, forging the tang is fine. I wouldn’t forge the blade to shape though. I usually have enough steel so I don’t bother forging out the tang. Thanks for watching.

@@TyrellKnifeworks you call this a hunting knife in the video but for typical hunting applications it the wrong blade shape and size my opinion....we have length restrictions so i understand that honestly i feel this knife would best suit carving not fileting or skinning and its a bit smallish for serious "camp craft" but as i said well made and nice to look at just not what i would carry were i in the bush again and depending on it to do most of the jobs a saw or axe or scalpel would be better at. its still a knife it still cuts and slices not likley to be in a chefs hands in a 5 star kitchen ot someone who makes there living in the woods.....again my opinion hope i am not offending
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks 2 жыл бұрын
@@mobiousenigma No worries, I'm not offended. The term "hunting knife" is a really huge range. I totally separate those from "skinning" knife which has a specific purpose. If you look at some of the big suppliers like Buck, they have a huge range of what they consider hunting knives. This knife has a decently wide blade so it could break down a carcass if needed. I wouldn't consider it a camp knife, I agree its too small for that. For an overall knife to carry, its decently sized. thanks for checking it out!

The way you got the wave pattern in the blade was impressive. I wonder if that flattening jig on the grinder will adjust out of 90, seems like it would be great for doing tapered tangs. You do fantastic work, thank you for sharing it with us.

I like your starbond idea. I didn't even know that existed. I've been using saw dust from the sanding with regular thin CA glue to fill voids. It does a good job, but it always creates a mess and requires resanding the whole thing. I think I'm going to try the starbond.

Amboyna is pretty cool and I chanced on some old timber reclaimed from scrap via one of my sources, it was all burly, spalted and pretty special after stabilising- which it really does need as its quite soft otherwise and has the durability of a cheese stick. Another trick for you with belt life (apart from the big rubber eraser) is if you use a lot of compound abrasive belts like the 3M gators, get a file card, run them down to about 25% speed and just give them a few laps with the file card and it seems to kick a bit more life into them if they're a bit glazed over. They're expensive belts so its always nice to get a few extra uses out of them
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've heard that trick for trizac belts. I don't use them too often though and don't even have any right now. I'm going to be going over some new belts in this Thursday's video, come check that out! Thanks for watching!

@@TyrellKnifeworks I find them nearly indispensable in my work to do a lot of the final grades, especially when working on tool steels full of vanadium, lots of carbides and stuff which essentially takes no crap from sandpaper, those and the scotchbrites are worth their weight every time. The Norton Norax are also a bit cheaper, found they're really good in the 150-500grit range if you're after something which lasts, finishes and cuts well without getting too hot Currently quite happy with the 3M Cubitron II's in 36g for heavy cutting and when you do a lot of knives its quite surprising how well they last- run the grinder up to 100% and moderate pressure I was able to do the bevels on 9 x 8" kitchen knives on one belt before it got too flogged out. The old standby of Norton Blaze is still good as ever and managed to get pretty close to par with those on some grits of Klingspor's ceramic belts. Really sort of depends on where you are in the world and whats available, but there's quite a bit out there and worth shopping around, trying out new ones to see what works with your gear

Another very safe way to avoid tearouts in the wood is to make a pilot hole with a smaller drillbit and after that make the holes with the size you want from either side, meeting in the middle. you'll get a perfectly centered hole with no tearouts whatsoever (in chase for some reason the backer plate is getting in the way and you don't want to use it)
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, but that doesn't work when you need to perfectly place a hole within the hole in the tang that is already sized to what you want. I've never had a problem with the backer board. Thanks for the suggestion though, I'm sure it would work in other circumstances. 👍🏻
