For what? It's legal to do this with coins. it's a few cents worth of nickel and a few cents worth of copper. besides that, jewelers have been making mokume gane this way for years to make jewelry. Personally I use nickels because there's a higher nickel content than there is in quarters.

Yes, pennies are such a waste. I remember several years ago reading that it cost something like 1.4 cents to make a single penny. This week I started cleaning at a manual car wash, I see so many pennies just tossed away like, well, they are worthless.

These guys comment like you lost money. The video didnt do the effect justice. Blade collectors pay premiums for unique blades I made a beautiful Tsuba for a Tanto. Using this very method. A good cleaning with Degreaser really helps with the forge weld. I used some foreign coins and got some gorgeous color variations. It reminded me of a drop of oil on asphalt in the rain.
