The armor in Kastenbrust style can be found on the medieval images. There is almost no armor of this style preserved to our days. Their recreation is only possible using medieval statues, bas-reliefs or images. There are a lot of them, which proves that this type of armor was widespread in Germany and Flanders in the first half of the 15th century.

Kastenbrust is translated from German as a "box chest". Besides that, the angular shapes in general were specific for this type of armor. The knees, elbows, gauntlets were forged with a similar geometry.
It is generally believed that the plate protection of the limbs appeared at the beginning of the 14th century in Spain and Portugal. When the term "Plate leg armor" or "Plate cuisse" is used, it usually means the part of the armor which has the knee and the thigh plate. They are connected via transition elements with movable rivets. This way the knight's leg can be fully covered with steel plates without losing the movability.
